My oldest known ancestor, Hans Berggren, was a combmaker in Stockholm in the late 1700s.
Are there any guild records of any kind that might contain information about him?
Does anyone have any ideas of where a combmaker would have lived/worked in Stockholm in the late 1700s?

Hans Berggren was master of the combmaker guild.
His wife Helena Charlotta Svedberg died 1782 23/12, 42 years old, in Katarina parish in Stockholm city.

Helena Charlottas father, Lars Svedberg, was also master of the combmakers guild. He died 1758 2/11, 53 years old, in Ulrika Eleonora parish in Stockholm city. Helena Charlottas mother Agneta Sofia Linnert died 1765 3/5, 59 years old, in Ulrika Eleonora parish, Stockholm. She was first married to combmaker Peter Törngren who died 1735 16/9.

Agneta Sofia Linnert's father was Wosten Linnert, court musician.

Hans Berggren died 1800 27/11 in Katarina parish, Stockholm, 72 years old. He was sometimes called Bargren (when the son Carl Adolph was born 1762) or Barrgren (inventory after Agneta Sofia Linnert 1765).

Wow, thanks!

Han anyone been able to follow Hans Berggren's lineage back further in time?

From other family members I have Nils Svedberg as the father of Helena Charlotta.  Any idea as to the relationship between Nils and Lars?

I only have children of Hans Berggren born in 1765 and later.  Was the mother also Helena Charlotta?

Carl Adolph was born 1762 4/5 in Katarina parish, but he probably died young. Helena Charlotta was the mother.
The inventory for Helena Charlotta (nr 1783/1B:171) mentions six surviving children:
1/ Ulrika Charlotta, 18 years old
2/ Carl Peter, 15
3/ Maria Lovisa, 14
4/ Johan Fredrik, 13
5/ Lorens Samuel, 11
6/ Hans Jakob, 7
They had at least two more daughters; Johanna Sophia, b. 1778 and Anna Sophia, b. 1774. Both of them must have died very young.

I guess that Nils Svedberg is a misreading?

Thank you for the list of children.  That closely agrees with the list I have (which came from the family bible of Carl Peter's son Andreas Peter).  Just some small differences in names and spellings.  But I didn't have Carl Adolph, Johanna Sophia, or Anna Sophia.

> I guess that Nils Svedberg is a misreading?

Nils Svedberg's signature is on the guild certificate as besidder (Danish translation), for Carl Petter Berggren as a master comb maker.  I believe his signature is also on a letter of recommendation carried by Carl Petter when he emigrated to Copenhagen.  I would assume he was important in the comb maker's guild.

It might be worth following up a Hans Bargren born 1730 1/4 in Svea Livgardes Grenadjärbataljon (a military parish in Stockholm). Parents were Nils Bargren and Maria Persdotter. They also had a son Hans born in 1728 17/10 but i guess he died.

Nils Svedberg is listed as a combmaker in the census 1800 (not realy a census, mantalslängd is more like a taxregister but i don?t know the english word for it) in Adolf Fredrik parish. In 1810 he has disappeared. According to Family Search he married 1792 in Adolf Fredrik with Anna Fernström.

If You want more information about Nils I suggest that You put a question under Landskap/Stockholm/Församlingar/Adolf Fredrik. There are some people, i.e. Chris Bingefors and Helene Jorsell, that are very good att tracing people in Stockholm around 1800.

You can also try to ask what happened to Hans Nilsson Bargren under Landskap/Stockholm/Församlingar/Övriga församlingar/Svea Livgard

I?m on vacation for a couple of weeks and only have access to information that I already have in my computor.

It doesn't look like I'm allowed to post in that forum!  If I translated the response correctly, I need a password to post there.

In the first response, Staffan Bengtsson posted some information, most of which I have not been able to find on Genline.  Since Staffan appears to be on vacation, does anyone else have reference citations for the sources he might have used?

Staffan has probably used the index to the probates of Stockholm during the 1700s (Stockholms bouppteckningsregister), which is a very detailed index for the 1700s. It lists not only the deceased, but also relatives mentioned in the probate.

Is the bouppteckningsregister available online or on a CD, or does one need to physically visit the archives?

As far as I know it is not available online and not on a cd, but might be available on microfilm from the Family History Centers. I have not checked the catalog of the FHL, but think they might have it. It is also available on microfiche from SVAR, a branch of the Swedish National Archives.

As Eliabeth wrote a lot of the information that I posted comes from the index to the probates of Stockholm during the 1700s (Stockholms bouppteckningsregister).

If You contact Stockholms Stadsarkiv I guess that You can get copies of the inventories/probates.

It might help if You have the archive numbers:

Berggren, Hans: 1801/3:416
Svedberg, Helena Charlotta: 1783/1B:171
Svedberg, Lars: 1759/2:1311
Linnert, Agneta Sofia: 1765/2:538
Törngren, Peter: 1737/1:13

Nordiska museet http://www.nordiskamuseet.se/
has an archive for the comb makers guild. I live close to the museum so perhaps I can have a look in the archive some day.

Staffan,

Thank you for your efforts!  I'm still trying to find a parish birth record for Helena Charlotta Svedberg.

I wish I had been researching this on the few times I was in Stockholm on business, before I retired.  I do hope to visit Denmark and Sweden within the next couple of years, to visit places ancestors have lived.

Today I briefly checked the minutes from the combmakers guild in Stockholm. I didn't find any information about combmaker Hans Berggren/Bargrens origin. But his last name is consistently spelled Bargren in the minutes. Never Berggren.

Berggren was a fairly common name then and still is. More than 11 000 persons in Sweden today are called Berggren. Nobody is called Bargren in Sweden today and it was a very rare name in the 18:th century. This makes it more likely that Hans Bargren born 1730 in Stockholm is identical with the boy Hans Bargren that 1746 28/5 was enrolled as an apprentice at combmaker Peter Hult, master of the guild.

1750 2/6 Hans Bargren became journeyman, 1760 12/4 he became a master and 1772 14/10 master of the guild. When I find some time I will transcribe a summary of the minutes from 1759 and 1760 and send to Your e-mail. I also have a copy of Hans Bargrens own hand-writing and his signature that I can scan and send to You.

Lars Svedberg became a journeyman 1731 3/9 and was then called Lars Nilsson. He became a master 1737 28/6. Nils Svedberg was a nephew to Lars Svedberg.

Staffan, this is great!

Thank you so very much for your efforts.
If we get over to Stockholm, we'd like to buy you dinner!
