I am looking for the burial location of this husband and wife, (my gggrandfather and grandmother).  Perhaps they are on the CD Begravda I Sverige?  Their last known residences were within Stockholm, but I could not find them in a search of  hittagraven.stockholm.se/

Many Thanks! :-)

Jack,

I don't see them on the cd Begravda i Sverige and I don't see them on the cd Begravda i Stockholm.

Those cds are hardly complete.

Graves are reused after a certain number of years. I don't know the details.

Jack,

I would assume they were buried in the churchyard of the parish church in the parish where they died.

How intriguing! A churchyard on that islet?! I have been to Skeppsholmen numerous times but have never noticed a burial ground. I must take a look as soon as I get the opportunity.

Hello Judy, Leif, Lasse and Evastina,
Thank you all so much for your help and comments. I am visiting Stockholm and would be pleased to be ableto visit the burial grounds of these ancestors. I understand the kyrka at Skeppsholm has been decomissioned so I am wondering what became of the burial gorunds. Also, would the Skeppsholms kyrkoarkivDöd- och begravningsböcker refrence indicate the location of burials?  Are the book images online?

Thanks again for all your help
Jack

Hello Jack,

I could not leave it be so I am currently doing some research.  I have found that this islet was not considered to be suitable for burials, nor did the place for the preceding church which was on the islet next to Skeppsholmen to the west (nowadays called Blasieholmen).  Instead they used either Amiralitetskyrkogården or Galärkyrkogården, depending on when the person died.  Both cemeteries were located on the island of Djurgården.  The former is no more (I think), but the latter is next to the Vasa Museum (a museum you simply MUST visit if you come to Stockholm) and it is a beautiful place. Hopefully I can find some more info for you.

I am also a little curious why a person living on Renstiernas gata would belong to Skeppsholmen's parish.  That street used to be in Katarina's parish.  However, the year they died might be important so I will seek some more info.  BTW: Did you gggrandfather have a connection with the admiralty?  (My guess after seeing where he was born. I have ancestors in that parish too.  )  That could be the reason, the admiralty was located on Skeppsholmen, in fact, the old name of Skeppsholmen was Amiralitetsholmen, i.e. The Admiralty's Islet.

Jack,

Here is a link to Otto August Lagerström in Stockholm Town's Archive's database containing info from 'Rotemansarkivet' where one can find info about his (and his family's) whereabouts in four time periods.

As I thought, he died in Katarina parish, but for some reason he was registered in Skeppsholmen's parish since 1838.

Hi
I was hoping that someone with more knowledge of Stockholm and this parish, should react to my posting. I live in the south of Sweden in Malmö and have no personal knowledge about this little island which belonged to the swedish marine for more than 300 years. Otto August Lagerström was a engine man/boiler man in the marine so that probably the reason to why he belonged to Skeppsholmens parish. I could not find any churchyard on this island, but I was expecting some comments from those who know more.

Hello again, Jack!

I have e-mailed you a map from 1885 showing the church on Skeppsholmen and the cemetery on Djurgården (the one nowadays called Galärkyrkogården).  There is a wikipedia article about the church. It mentions that is was secularised in 2002.

Now, about the graves; I checked NAD - National Archive Database.  It mentions a grave register for Galärvarvskyrkogården (Yes, that is the official name, born in Stockholm one drops the 'varv' part ).

I suggest that you get in touch with Stockholms Stadsarkiv (Town's archive) if you are interested in seeing the register when you come to Stockholm.  The reference is 'Skeppsholms kyrkoarkiv' and code 'SE/SSA/0014/O IV/1' (this is the register from 1906). They would also be able to tell if my assumption that your ancestors were buried at Galärvarvskyrkogården is correct.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in Stockholm!
