Tom from Baltimore

My grandmother's mother was born in Eksjö stads, Jönköping on 11 Nov 1840. She was the illegitimate daughter of Maja Stina Carlsdotter and was given the name Betty Maria /Byloff/. An old letter from Sweden says Elisabeth's father was a priest with surname Bulow and Maria was his maid. He wanted to marry her but she didn't think she was good enough. Maria gave their daughter his surname Bulow and the priest gave her money so mother and child shouldn't suffer.
I have found in the Husförhörslängd records of Eksjö stads the lives of Maja Stina and Betty Maria. I have looked for the father's name Byloff or Bulow in the Husförhörslängd and court records for Eksjö stads and lands but find no record.
I do not know if the priest was Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, or other. How would I find his full name, place of birth, and birthdate on some church roster from 1840? Thank you
Tom

Well, in 1840 he could not be anything but State Church Lutheran, as no other denominations were allowed here then.

Hello
In this time was in Eksjö vicar Nils Johan Danielsson 1811-1857.
Assistant vicar Axel Jacob Björkeroth 1839-1843 before him was Carl Johan von Melen.
This is no priest in Eksjö with name Byloff or Bulow.

Thanks to both Elisabeths for your information. Since Maja Stina was born and raised in Askeryd parish, might she have been a maid in a parish on the north side of Eksjö like Askeryd, Flisby, Norra Solberga, or Ingatorp in Jönköping or Västra Ryd or Svinhult in Öster Götlands and then travelled to Eksjö to have her baby. Thanking you in advance.

Elisabeth,
I have ordered the Husförförslängd records for Askeryd at about the time of Betty Maria's birth. I will look for a Byloff living there with Maja Stina in the household. A map I have shows that Askeryd Parish is next to Eksjö and is a likely place for my ancestor to be living. Thank you for your ideas. Tom

To my helpers,
I have also ordered the Domböcker for Jönköping for the time period 1837 to 1845. I will look for the priest legally giving Betty Maria a last name of Byloff. Elisabeth Leek, do you have a record of who were priests in Askeryd during the time around 1840? Thank you
Tom

Elisabeth Leek,
I looked in the Askeryd Parish Utflyttade records and found that Maya Stina Carlsdotter, her two sisters, and her brother left Askeryd Parish in October of 1837 and went to Eksjö. Her father had remarried and perhaps they didn't get along with their stepmother.
I have searched the Askeryd Parish Husförhörslängd records around 1840 and I do not find the soldier with the name Bylow. Will you give me his full name and pedigree information so I can see if his relative is the man I am looking for. Thank you.

Johan Anders Byloff.
He was born in Loftahammar parish 1788 29/10, his father was a farmer Anders Bengtsson. J.A. Byloff became a student in Uppsala in 1815 (belonged to the studentnation of Östergötland); was ordained 1817. Assistant vicar in Målilla and Gårdveda parishes 1844. He was suspended 1849-50; off duty and dispossessed 1851; he was then dismissed by the Chapter 1856, but he died before the final verdict was given from higher authority. He died 1858 29/4.

This might be the priest you?re searching for. There must be more information about him before his nomination in 1844 to assistant vicar in Målilla-Gårdveda. There is biographical books about priests, for Målilla-Gårdveda you might look for books named:  Linköpings stifts herdaminne.

Hej Nicklas

Hello helpers,
Thank you Niclas for the information on Johan Anders Byloff. He sounds like the kind of priest that I am looking for and the parishes of Målilla and Gårdveda are close to Eksjö.
I have ordered a microfilm from the Mormans that has the minutes of the Diocesan Court (Domkapitlet Linköpings stift) for the time period 1838-1844. I may be able to find the order giving the priests name (Byloff) to Betty Maria. Again, thank you for the progress we are making.

Hi!

I suggest you Tom to order the clerical survey (husförhörslängden) for both Målilla and Gårdveda and seek when and wherefrom J.A. Byloff arrived there [Gårdveda AI:6 1843-1851 and Målilla AI:7 1842-1851]. If you trace him backwards before 1844, when he was installed as an assistant vicar in Målilla-Gårdveda, you might find a clue if he had been in any closer area to Maja Stina Carlsdotter when the child should have been begetted. It?s  likely that he had had a service as some assistant priest or served at some gentry before 1844, maybe at some manor in the Eksjö-area.
Another suggestion is to check if there is any recording of his death estate inventory [Aspelands häradsrätt in Vadstena landsarkiv]. There it might, if he is the father of your grandmother?s mother Betty Maria /Byloff/, say if he has recognized her as his heir [your familytradition tell us that the childs father had given both mother and child money so this might be stated as his last will].
Have you followed the mother Maja Stina Carlsdotter in the clerical surveys?

sincerely
Niclas R:

Hello Niclas,
Maja Stina had another daughter Emelie Augusta Animina 12 May 1846 who died 25 Feb 1847. Maja Stina then left Eksjö 7 Nov 1847 and went to Sventorp in Skaraborg. She left Betty Maria in the Eksjö orphanage (barn på staden). Betty Maria left the orphanage 22 Feb 1856 and went to Härja in Skaraborg. I then see her coming from Lommaryd parish into Adelov parish where she was married in 1866. I hope this helps.

Hello helpers,
I received a tape of the Linköpings DomCapitols from the Mormons. On 4 Apr 1839 J.A. Byloff was made head vicar of Ukna parish in Kalmar. He took A.J. Björkeroth's place as head of the Eksjö parish from 1 Nov 1839 to 1 May 1840. In April 1841 he was made head vicar of Rök and Heda parishes in ÖsterGötlands. Thus, he was in Eksjö about the time Betty Maria was conceived.
I have not yet found a record where Betty Maria was given the name Byloff. I have a difficult time translating the handwritten Swedish records, but I believe I have the general idea of what happened.
Thank you all. Tom from Baltimore

Hello helpers,
I have done some more study of the Swedish-English dictionary and have found some errors in my last message. J. A. Byloff was never a head vicar. His titles were Vicar Comminster or S. M. Adjunkt which I think means assistant vicar.
I would appreciate someone telling me what the following Domkapitlet records say about J. A. Byloff's trip to Eksjö. See Mormanäs tape 0150112:
  9 Oct 1839 record 24 page 171
  30 Oct 1839 record 10 page 189
  29 Apr 1840 record 21 page 339-340
  20 May 1840 record 4 page 17-18
  18 Nov 1840 record 13 page 260
  3 Mar 1841 record 11 page 366-367
I also found a Husförhörslängd record in Gårdveda parish showing J. A. Byloff living in the hus pastorn in Salsnäs from 1844-1849. His birth place, day, and month were not given.
I found J. A. Byloff's parents in the birth record from Loftahammar parish, however, I was not able to find his death record on 29 Apr 1858 in either Vadstena stadsförsamling or Vadstena hospitalsförsamling. The Mormans do not have a tape for Vadstena landsförsamling. Any help will be appreciated. Tom from Baltimore

Hello again,
I found several more records in the Domkapitlet that also mention Eksjö and A. J. Björkeroth.
  24 Apr 1839 record 10 page 430 says för S. M. Adj. J. A. Byloff att vara Vicar Commin. i Eksjö.
Does this mean he was to be the assistant vicar in Eksjö?
  24 Apr 1839 record 12 page 431 shows A. J. Björkeroth requesting a job in Eksjö.
On 9 Oct 1839 record 17 page 169 tells something about A. J. Björkeroth in Eksjö. The 30 Oct 1839 record 1 page 186 tells some more about A. J. Björkeroth in Eksjö.

Hello again,
I have been translating the hand written Linköpings Domkapitlet Protocoll 1838-1841 (Morman's tape no. 0150112) records which mention J.A.Byloff or A. J. Björkeroth. The following records convince me that J.A.Byloff was in Ekesjö in February 1840.
On 24 Apr 1839 record 10 - Byloff was assigned to be substitute Comminister in Ekesjö.
On 24 Apr 1839 record 12 - C.A. Brodin, J.P. Ljung, and A.J. Björkeroth are recommended as the regular Comminister in Ekesjö parish.
  On 25 Sep 1839 record 9 - Ekesjö election results: A.J. Björkeroth 72 13/24, J.P. Ljung 63 1/8, C.A. Brodin no vote.
On 9 Oct 1839 record 17 - Björkeroth given permission to out travel by the Ekesjö parish and the Synod.
On 9 Oct 1839 record 24 - Byloff authorized half annual substitute pay for 1 May 1839 to 1 Nov 1839 at Ekesjö. Money was from Synod Building Fund.
On 30 Oct 1839 records 1 and 10 - Björkeroth given official oath as Comminister in Ekesjö and given permission to not move to Ekesjö until 1 May 1840.
On 29 Apr 1840 record 30 - Byloff assigned to be substitute Comminister in Rök and Heda parishes.
On 20 May 1840 record 4 - Byloff was authorized half year of Ekesjö substitute pay from 1 Nov 1839 to 1 May 1840.
On 18 Nov 1840 record 13 - Byloff requests the rest of the pay authorized 9 Oct 1839 and 20 May 1840.
I have traced Byloff's family in Loftahammar parish back to the 1600's. Niclas Rosenbalck gave me Byloff's death date but I have not been able to find the place of death. Please provide this final loose-end. Thank you all for your help.

Dear Elizabeth,
The word vikarie in Swedish seems to be the problem in translation. When it is abbreviated as in the 24 Apr 1839 record att vara Vicar. Commin. i Ekesjö, I assumed it was a title Vicar Comminister. In fact, it was Vikarie Comminister or substitute Comminister. The later records write out vikarie or vikarien. Byloff was surely a substitute Comminister.
