I have a name, Carl Theodore Svensson from Gunnarsmala, Kalmar Lan, Sweden, born November 20, 1887. Emigrated to America I believe in his teens. Changed his name to Carl Theodore Gunnarson. His Sweden name and where he is from in Sweden and his changed name is on his marriage record. Could you look up when he emigrated to America and the family he left behind. He is my father..thank you

There is a Karl Teodor who was born November 20, 1886 i Gunnarsmåla, Sulegång, Misterhult Parish. Son of Karolina Josefina Persdotter and father unknown. That can be the one that you are looking for.

Hej Rex,
Good work! I found on the Ellis Island site a Karl T Svenson who emigrated from Sweden (no details of town) at age 16 on April 6, 1902. His destination was Greeley, Colorado, as was the goal of three others on the ship: Carl J Petterson, Johan D Karlson and Andreas E Karlson. They came on the ship Saint Louis built 1895 in Philadelphia, via Southampton (England). He had ten dollars with him. No other info given.

Rex - I looked more closely and found a little more info on the ship manifest: Carl J Petterson was listed as a laborer, 34 yrs old. Johan was 18, Andreas was 19, your Carl was 16, and they were all traveling with Carl J, so he may have been some kind of recruiter or something. Carl J Petterson had 40 dollars with him. All the names were probably shortened (sson > son) perhaps by the fellow writing the ship manifest. Maybe Roger or someone else could check the husförhörslängd (record of the yearly minister visits to each household) for you and see if it says when Carl T left Misterhult.

In 1890, Karl Teodor and his mother Karolina Josefina Persdotter lived with K J Persdotters parents at Gunnarsmåla, Per Johan Andersson and Emma Maria Nilsdotter.

Karl T. Svensson, age 16 left Misterhult 26 march 1902 travelled alone via Göteborg to Greeley, CO , USA. Can this be the right K T Svensson?

Svenson/Nilsdotter

This well probably be a hard one to fine, what happen to Carolina Josefina Nilsdotter's husband, my grand-father?. If she was staying with K J Persdotter family in Gunnarsmala, there must of been something happen to Carolina husband, if there was a husband, and what happened to Carl Johan Nilsdotter. If we can find the answer's to all these then my search is over....Rex

Rex -
Most probably Carolina Josefina Nilsdotter didn't have a husband. It is possible that she did and sued him for paternity payments, but that was rather unusual. It was against the law at that time to have illegitimate children, and if they found out, both parents usually had to pay a fine.

Carl Johan (your father's uncle) wouldn't have been called Nilsdotter (=daughter of Nils); since his father was Per, although he calls himself Petersson = Peter's son.

Persdotter

Could someone look up Carolina Josefina Persdotter, b. 13 Sept 1864, she was my grand-mother, what happened to her, did she ever marry?, when did she pass away?. What happened to her parents?. Her father was Per Johan Andersson b. 08 March 1834, and married Emma Maria Nilsdotter, b. 29 Sept 1844. Both parents were from Gunnarsmala, Sweden, Misterhult Parish.
