You have probably misread the name of your grandfather. Shouldn?t it be Hjalmar?

You are right. Thank you. I didn't even know that his name wasn't really James until I found the 1910 census. It is handwritten so they are quite hard to read. Cyndi Holmes

Hi Cindy,

1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Lars Lundeen
Home in 1910: Sherman, Kootenai, Idaho
Gender: Male. Series: T624. Roll: 225. Part: 1
Page: 192B. Year: 1910
According to the 1910 census the approx. age of Lars Lundeen is 32, Esther is 6 and Hjalmar 4 years old. Census was written on the 6th of May.

Lena is 36 years old and her husband Olof is 41.

And according to SSDI Lars was born in 1878:
Name: Lars Lundeen
SSN: 518-05-0241
Last Residence: Idaho
Born: 7 Feb 1878
Died: Jun 1963
State (Year) SSN issued: Idaho (Before 1951)

There is a Lars Wilhelm Lundén on the Swedish population 1890 CD, born 1878 but I cannot find him on the Emigrant CD.

--------------
This Lars Lundén (don't know if it is your Lars Lundeen) was born in Värnamo, Jönköpings county, Småland.
His father: Per Adolf Lundén, born 1842 in Alby, Örebro County, Närke.
His mother: Wilhelmina Karolina Karlsson, born 1846 in Tofteryd, Jönköpings County, Småland.

His siblings:
- Bror David, born 1875 in Jönköping, Jönköpings County, Småland.
- Syster Elin, born 1880 in Almby, Örebro County, Närke.
- Oskar Emanuel, born 1882 in Örebro, Örebro County, Närke.
- Eva, born 1890 in Örebro, Örebro County, Närke.

They reside (1890) at No. 17 Gamla gatan, Örebro, Örebro county, Närke.

Lena might have left the household, becuse?

Does any of the information above sound familiar to you?
--------------

Do you by any chance have a Declaration of intention for Lars Lundeen? That usually states where in Sweden he was from and the date of his departure from Sweden amongst other things.

There is also the possibility that he changed is last name when he came to the US.

Best regards
Anna

In the database Emibas the following family is found:

Lars Persson, born 1878 Feb.7 in Ekshärad, Värmland
w. Johanna Kristina Jansdotter, born 1876 Aug.9 in Los, Hälsingland
d. Ester Elisabeth Persson, born 1903 Mar.21 in Färila, Hälsingland.

This family emigrated in 1904 June 29 from Färila.

They have not been found in the Swedish Passengerlists or on Ellis Island or in Boston Arrival lists, but I think it is likely that this is the family you are looking for.

Yes this must be it. I just spoke to my mother and she said she thought her grandmothers name was Johanna. She also just remembered that the surname was what she thought was Peterson. Persson is close and she was only 7 years old when she left Idaho. She only saw her father once or twice after that. Can you find the names of the parents of Lars and Johanna? This is a wonderful website. Thank you very much!
Thank you, Cyndi

Hi Cindy,
I found Johanna but there were too many Lars and none of them had a sister named Lena. Maybe somebody else can find him.

Here is the information for Johanna Kristina Jansdotter that Elisabeth mentioned, which I found on the Swedish Population 1890 (CD):

Johannas mother: Margaretha Andersdotter, born 1850 in Los, Gävleborgs County, Hälsingland.
She is a widow in 1890.
The family resides in Ryggskog, Los, Gävleborgs County, Hälsingland.

Johannas siblings:
Johan Jonsson, born 1872, in Los, Gävleborgs County, Hälsingland.
Anna Margareta Elisabet/h, illegitimate child, born 1889 in Los, Gävleborgs County, Hälsingland.

Best regards
Anna

Hi Cindy

A quick look into the Ekhärad Birtht records showed that Lars was born 1878 Feb.7, son of Per Månsson and his wife Karolina Jonasdotter of Norra Skoga in Ekshärad.

The 1890 Census showed that the family had moved to Yg in Färila parish:

Månsson, Per 1839 b in Ekshärad
Jonsdotter, Karolina 1836 b in Norra Råda (Värml)
Children all born in Ekshärad
(Barn), Karolina 1874 Ch
(Barn), Nils 1876 Ch
(Barn), Lars 1878 Ch
(Barn), Anna 1880 Ch

For further information you can check the church records of the parishes mentioned. You can get access to the church records through your closest Family History Center (Mormons).

Per Anna Persson (Avipe)4 July message to Cindi Homes, the Lena refered to there is the wife of Olof Rosenquist who shows up on the 1900 US Census in Hennepin County Minnesota.  This is my wife's (Mary Ellen Rosenquist/Cotton), paternal Grandparents.  Lena is shown as Carolina, age 26, and Husband Olof (age 32 born in 1868).  They were married in USA 2 years earlier (1898.)  She came to USA in 1894, and he in 1887.  We have his Naturalzation papers.  It seems that they met in USA prior to their marriage.  We know that he came from somewhere in Bekinge Lan Province, and are looking for the town.  It is not clear yet, what town Carolina was from.
We plan to arrive in Malmo Sweden from 2 September 2005, departing 7 September.  While there, we plan to visit the Swedish Immigrant Institute in Vaxjo on 4 September to seen if we can find any records there.  If anyone knows the towns referenced above, or has further information, please let us know.  We do have a picture of Olaf's home, taken sometime in the 1870's with his parents, siblings, and what appears to be a Great Grandmother noted in the picture to be 99 years old at the time.  This picture came from the personal effects of Vernon Rosenquist (he is listed on the 1900 census as a son) (he is my Wife's uncle). If anyone wishes to see this picture, I will send it.
We are trying to bridge this family to Sweden but have not had much luck yet, tracing them back from Washington and Idaho, to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and then to Minnesota.

Bart, if you look at my posting above, you will find that Karolina (Carolina) was born 1874 in the parish of Ekshärad in the eastern part of the province of Värmland.

As a child, prior to 1890, she moved with parents and siblings to a place called Yg in the parish of Färila, in the province of Hälsingland.

Her full birth date was 1874 May 3, and she emigrated in 1893 April 6 from Yg.

Anna and Elisabeth, Thank You both very much for all your help. This is such a nice website, as I didn't know where to go for answers and with the name change I never would have found anything without you. Do you know Johanna fathers name? Why did so many people change their Surname when they arrived here in the U.S.? One thing that I really enjoy with finding the family tree is the old photos and family stories, do you know where I could look or if that is possible? Thank You, Cyndi

My great grandfather Peter Lundeen, was a brother to Lars Lundeen.  He was born 1867 July 17, in Eksharad, Varmland.  Peter emigrated in 1887 to Wisconsin,US.  He married, in Wisconsin, Christina Timell, born 1869 June 14, Jerbo.

Christina's mother came in 1888.  Her name was Johanna Timell.  According to her death certificate her parents were Sven Olson and Britta Anderson.  Johanna was born 1834 Feb. 9 in Jerbo.

I would like to find out Johanna's husbands name or any other information I could.  IVY

A woman named Johanna Timell, age 55, emigrated in 1889 Aug.23 through the port of Göteborg from Högsäter, Dalsland (formerly Älvsborg county) to New York.

She travelled in the company of Anna, age 18, and Brita Cajsa, age 21, possibly her daughters.

Elisabeth, this is the right one.  I have copies of Alvsborg Exit records for Anna Sofia Andersdotter Timell and Britta Kajsa Andersdotter Timell. They are Christina's sisters.  Could not find records for Johanna or Christina. Looks like they have two last names.  Is this usual?

According to records in the Rhindlander Wisconsin Immanuel Lutheran church Johanna Timel was born 9 Feb. 1834 Jerbo Elfsborgs Lan

Johanna had two other children, Ida Marie born 27 Feb 1864 emigrated 1881 and Johan Adolf born 3 Feb 1866 emigrated 1882

Bo thanks for the information.  I don't know if this is the right one as the birth date is not the same for Johanna.  But its closer than anything else I have.  IVY

I found a database site in Sweden that contains a parish database of births, marriages, and deaths.  I was able to find the birth records of Olof Rosenquist, B 1868-1-26 in Tving Parish, Place, Klackamala.  Olof was married to Carolina Lundeen, referenced above.  This site is:
http://www.ddss.nu/(dxdl0n55spdmzk45gitjee55)/engelsk/ddss/eng_birthSearch.aspx.
It is called DDSS - Demographic Database for Southern Sweden.  It only contains birth records for Tving, but birth, marriage, and death records for other parishes.
Is there a similar site to find Carolina's records, as that was in a different part of Sweden.  Also, if we want to find more family records and decendants of Olof, should we start another discussion group?

Bart, you can post queries on Olof under
Landskap > Blekinge > Socknar > Tving

There is no database on-line for Ekshärad, except the subscription database Genline, where you can find pictures of the actual church records (www.genline.com)

But you can post queries under
Landskap > Värmland > Socknar > Ekshärad

There is another place with quite a lot of parish data (in Excel-format) here:
http://www.slaktdata.org/en/reg
However nothing about Ekshärad from what I can see.

We do have all Värmland records available here in Karlstad, but Ekshärad records are also available on Genline. I did find the family in the household records and in the 1881-1885 version it is noted that Karolina's half-brother (same mother) Per b. July 18 1867 emigrated to Minsota i N Amerika May 3 1882.

Can I help with more data - let me know!

Yes there is a father for Per mentioned in the birth record (at Genline 1000.81.40.700) the father is farmer/widower Lars Persson from Fredriksnäs/Norra Mossberg. Found at Genline 477.56.13600. He was born in 1826.

Karolinas' son Erik Johan Eriksson.
His birth record - Genline 477.22.18400 says:
...the father was said to be Eric Ersson (Eriksson) from Norra Skogen.
I found Erik (and his elder mother) in the household record GID 477.19.24700.
He was born Jan 28 1830. His mother Kjerstin Thorbjörnsdotter in 1793.
Here a note says that Eric and Karolina married - Nov 10 1860 - after Erik's birth. This is Karolinas' first marriage.

Just tell me if you want me to locate some more ...

Burt - Ivy!

I evidently have made a mistake regarding emigration.
Since name and notes are on each side of the page - sideways scrolling sometimes end up at wrong row!
After checking I believe it was Erik Johan who emigrated in 1882. Per moved with his parent to Färila parish in Gefleborgs län. Per was confirmed in May 1882 (age 1882-1867=15).
I found the Månsson family with Per in Yg, Färila parish (GID 133.45.45200).
In the household records 1886-1890 (GID 133.48.20800) it is noted that Per emigrated to Amerika in 1887.

Now I hope I got it right!!

Olle, Let me see if I have this right.

Peter b 1867 father was Lars Persson born 1826.  His mother is dead.

John was Karolina's son with Eric Eriksson.

So the way I understand this is Erik (John) and Per (Peter) were step brothers.

So Per Monsson must be Karolina's second husband and father of Carolina, Nels, Lars and Anna?

You are right about Peter emigrating in 1887.  I have found on census the emigration year changes from census to census.  Seems they tend to forget what year it was after a while.  IVY
