Emigrated from Sweden in 1883 probably to California, USA. Would like some help to see if this is correct and how I might follow up his family in USA.

Olof was born in Helsingborg 27 October 1863.
Father: Hans P Friberg
Mother: Christina Johansdotter

Many thanks, Julie.

Hi Julie!
Do you know the lastname is?
Olof.....?
I have found one person in CD-Emigranterna called Olof Friberg-Christiansson 19 year, signed out from Helsingborg in 1883 and take a boat from Malmö.
I also find his parents, if you dont have them. in 1890-census in Sweden lived in Helsingborg with a son.
Mybee you should ask you questions under Ellis Island--and get a better answer?
Good Luck
Elisabet

Just checked Helsingborg. Not sure this is the man you want.
Found a Hans Christiansson Friberg born 29 October 1863 in Vellinge, Malmöhus county. Not 100% sure if it is Vellinge.Maybe the pastor has written Hans by mistake??
He came to Helsingborg on 14 Nov. 1881 from Göteryd, Kronoberg county. He is learning carpentry. He lived in nbr 9 of the block Carl XI in Helsingborg before he got permission to leave for America on 31 May 1883.

and Helsingborg utflyttningslängd 1883 - 1891 pg 9 of 148, GID 1250.55.60700.

Will try to check in Vellinge.

Book of births for Vellinge not yet in Genline system. Sorry. Hopefully someone holding the microfiches.
Furthermore, no luck with Göteryd.

Elisabet and Bo - thank you for your replies.  I think Olof Friberg-Christiansson is worth following up.  The dates certainly match.  I will try the Ellis Island suggestion.
Thanks once again for your help.  Julie.

Elisabet - you mentioned parents in Helsingborg in the 1890 census, living with a son - are their names available?  Is it Hans and Christina as in my first message, and is the son called Ludvig?  Would be grateful if you can confirm this for me.  Thanks, Julie.

The birth-records from Vellinge can be found in the Genline-system! Hans Christiansson Friberg was born at Vellinge (#24) on 27 October 1863. Father: Christian Friberg, mother: Elna Nilsdotter.
He doesn?t seem to e the right one for you, I guess.

According to Skånes Demografiska Databas (www.ddss.nu) Olof was born 27 Oct 1863 in Helsingborg lfs (lfs=landsförsamling=rural parish), Malmöhus county (today Skåne county). His parents were shoemaker Hans Friberg and wife Christina Johansdotter, 36 years old at the time. The family lived in Pålsköps Nybygge nr 15, Helsingborg lfs.

Olof's siblings (that I have found - there may be more):
? Johan b. 3 May 1853
? Nils Peter b. 23 Aug 1855
? Olivia Maria b. 185(8). Olivia Maria Friberg, 29 years old, had a son Johan Albin b. 24 Feb 1887 in Helsingborgs lfs, father unknown. The boy was living with his grandparents in census 1890 and still with his grandfather (widower) in 1900 census.
? August b. 29 Apr 1861
? Ludvig b. 19 Mar 1869. In 1890 he still lived with his parents in Nybygget 15, Helsingborgs lfs.

According to census Hans P Friberg was born 1828 in Helsingborg lfs, Christina Johansdotter 1826 in Broby, Kristianstad county (Skåne).

Hi Julie,
Olivia Maria Fribergs son Johan Albin (that Maud mentions above) last name was also Friberg. He died 7 May 1948 in Raus, Malmöhus County, Skåne. He married Emilia Charlotta (maiden name Bergström) 5 July 1917. Emilia was born 12 January 1883 in Raus, Malmöhus County, Skåne where she also died 11 September 1949.

In order to find out if they had any children my advice is that you contact the regional office in Lund and ask them for Emilia and Johans estate inventories.

Many thanks for all your help.
We have the right family in Helsingborg, but now I would like to find out where Olof Friberg went to in USA when he emigrated in 1883.
Cheers, Julie.

Hi Julie,
I am afraid that Ellis Island won't serve because it's from 1892 while Olof traveled in 1883.
http://www.castlegarden.org/
Castle Gardens was the predecessor to Ellis Island at NY and is now online with free access.  I did not find him as Olof Friberg so that may mean his name isn't correctly transcribed or that he landed at another port such as Boston, Philadelpha or Baltimore, to name the major ports.
I will check it out for you and see what I can learn.  Do you have a destination place in California?

Hi Chuck and Julie,

I think that they are far from completing this new Castle Garden site, based on a search for known Olson/Anderson (Name the patronymic.) relatives whose manifests have been found the old fashioned way. I got hits of perhaps two or three of each of those names per year when I tested the new site.

They also had hits far later than the time period of Castle Garden (and the Barge Office, which was the immediate predecessor of Ellis Island.)

It was nice meeting you, Chuck.

Judy

Olof Friberg was a seaman.  In 1912, he is 48 years old, has British nationality, was born in Helsangborg, Sweden according to the manifest which I have scanned for you.
He is visiting Peter Friberg in San Francisco.  His ship, S.S City of Panama arrived in San Francisco from Ancon, Panama - so I think this suggests you want to check the British genealogy lists.
Chuck
