Hej Maria,
You were correct about this family.  Here is their membership listing at Covenant Church in Thomaston, CT.
They arrived here in 1890 and returned to Sweden in 1902.  I doubt you have relatives in America from this family unless some of the kids returned to USA.

I'm not sure if I understood exactly what Maria tells us, but I think the whole family plus two girls born in Sweden returned to the US before 1930?

Is that correct Maria? And do you know the birthdates for Corinne and Greta? When did they return, do you know?

Hi
Some information from CD Emigranten:

19130116 leaves Aug Karlson, 48  and Myrtle Karlson, 20,  Gothenburg with destination New York. They are American citizens. (Source code 98:37:5043)

19170827 leaves August Carlsson, 53, Bothilda 50, Betty 22, Karin 7 and Greta, 1, Gothenburg for New York. They are all american citizens.
(Source code 104:135:22589)

Perhaps a search on Ellis Island combined with US Census search will give more information.

Hi
A search on Ellis Island shows that August and Myrtle lives in Thomastown when they arrives 1913.

From the manifest showing the Carlson family arrival Sept 13 it is shown that they have moved to Worcester, Massachussets. They live on 377 May.St.
The two young children are reg as US Citizens but born in Sweden. Is Bothilda 50 years old now, having a one year old child?

Hi again
The family lives in Worcester 1920, all of them except Greta.
1930 has Myrtle left the home, but the remaining three ( Henry, Ellida/Alida/Betty and Corinne L)
lives at home in worcester with their parents.

Hi once more

Grind Wheels is a company, August and Corrine are working there 1930. It might be the famous Norton Factories in Worcester that is meant.

I know, from own experiences, that a lot of information around Norton and Worcester exists and that very helpfull people can do a lot of research ?ver there.

Om du vill kan jag hjälpa dig med kontakt, min mail adress får du om du klickar på namnet överst

Thanks to Chuck who found the correct birtdates for the first three children I could extract an important record from the Ancestry database Massachusetts Death Index, 1970-2001:

Name:    Elida B Carlson
Certificate:    050805
Death Place:    Worcester
Death Date:    October 22, 1991
Birthplace:    Connecticut
Birth Date:    October 1, 1894

I believe looking for an obit for this most likely unmarried daughter of August and Bothilda will give you all the necessary clues to find living relatives. And if the obit doesn't help, a copy of the death certificate may. Unfortunately these are a pain to get hold of in Massachussetts, so try the obit first.

By the way, this is a link to a great story about the Norton factory in Worcester, the grind wheel invention connected with Höganäs in Skåne, and why there were so many Swedes in Worcester.

Hi
An evidence for that at least one family member worked at Norton is the WW1 reg card for Carl August Henry Carlson.

Just a note that there seems to be some uncertainty about Henry's age. The church record from Thomaston says he is born 1895, the WWI record says 1896. His birthrecord should be checked in Litchfield county, CT for the correct date.

Since he appears neither in MA Death register nor SSDI with either date it's my guess he dies before 1962. Unless he dies outside the US.

Hej

I just found Elida's obit. Unfortunately no relatives mentioned.

Any new idea where to search? The church?

ELIDA B. CARLSON, 97
Worcester Telegram & Gazette (MA)
October 24, 1991

Elida B. Carlson, 97, died Tuesday in the Mill Hill Nursing Home, 215 Mill St.
She was born in Connecticut, and lived in Worcester many years.
Miss Carlson was a domestic for various Worcester families.
She was a member of Salem Covenant Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with the Rev. Paul Sparrman officiating. There are no calling hours. After cremation, burial will be in New Swedish Cemetery.

Maybe a contact with the cemetery could be fruitful? My guess is Elida is buried with or near her parents, and it's not farfetched also the other children, if they stayed in Worcester are buried at the same cemetery.

From what I can see the Swedish Cemetery (Old & New) is now called the All Faiths Cemetery and the contact address is found at their website where you can also read about its history.

This is the funeral parlour who also may be helpful in putting you in contact with living relatives.

The Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, has the following church records for Salem Covenant Church in Worcester.

http://www.augustana.edu/swenson/

HIST = congregational history, MINS = minutes of church meetings, MEMB = membership records, M/A = ministerial acts (baptisms, confirmations, marriages, funerals, etc.)

STATE COUNTY CITY NAME OF CONGREGATION D F FILM # REEL# NOTES

MA WORCESTER WORCESTER SALEM COVENANT CHURCH C 1880 S-56
 MINS 1929-39;MEMB 1880-1956; SUNSCH'84-91

It is my understanding that the same church records are available in Sweden.

http://www.swemi.nu/eng/

The Swenson Center (and presumably Svenska Emigrantinstitutet)also have Swedish-American newspapers, which seem to me to be more informative than newspapers in the English language.

This is a listing of newspapers owned by the Swenson Center, and I suppose the same newspapers can be found in Sweden.

There is a Swedish-American genealogical society centered in Worcester.

I'm loking for relatives in America.
My grandmothers father Ola Bengtsson born 1845-03-19 in Gårdstånga, his wife Paulina Olsson born 1854-05-19, their children Nils Allan born 1877-12-16 and Hulda born 1879-03-15 all emigrated to America 1880 and my grandmother was left behind with relatives. The family arrived in New York on the ship City of Montreal on the 10th of May 1880, after that I have no trace of them.
If anyone knows anything about them, please let me know.
