Björn Edman

I am searching for information about the two sisters Ethel, born Edman in Massachusetts about 1915, and Dorothy, born about 1916 in New York. Their parents were Joseph Edman (born 1889 21 Oct in Gothenburg, Sweden) and Esther(born in Sweden about 1895). Later Joseph was a pilot of the harbor in New York. He died 1960 11 May in New York. According to the census of 1930 the family lived in Westchester, NY. Probably there was a son of Joseph called Paul Edman.

I am glad for any information of these persons and descendants.

Thanks
Björn Edman

Björn,

If no one comes forth with some concrete information for you, you could try this-

Since you know Joseph's death date, I think you could get some good information about his family if you got a copy of his newspaper obituary.  He might still have been living in Westchester when he died.  (Westchester County is located just north of New York City)  On U.S. Genweb's New York webpage I found a connection to the Westchester County Genealogy Society's Newspaper archive Collection:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/wcgsrs10.htm

Check out their webpage or write to this address and ask if they can search for his obituary in the newspaper archives (and what is the cost):

Westchester County Genealogical Society
P.O. Box 518
White Plains, NY 10603-0518

The obituary from the local paper will probably list the surviving childrens names (daughter's married names) and where each lived at the time.

Björn,

In the U.S. Social Security Death Index, there are 5 Paul Edmans listed.  Only 3 look like the right time period (if the sisters were born 1915, 1916), although in 1912 Esther would only have been 17 years old-

PAUL EDMAN   born 24 Nov 1924  died Feb 1976
Last residence:  Oakdale, Suffolk County, New York

PAUL R. EDMAN  born 27 Apr 1912  died 20 Jul 2001
Last residence:  Morton, Tazewell County, Illinois

PAUL A. EDMAN  born 27 Feb 1919  died 24 Apr 2001
Last residence:   Warren, Marshall County, Minnesota

If you are willing to pay $27. you can order a copy of a deceased person's Social Security application form, which will list his parents' names on it.  It takes a couple of months to get it.  More information on that here:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm

And again, if one of these above looks like a good possibility, you could just get the newspaper obituary from the public library in the town or city where he was living when he died.  Obituaries usually tell the names of the deceased person's parents, so you will know if it's the right Paul.

Is it possible to get further information about Joseph Natanael Edman, too? He was born in Gothenburg, Sweden 1889 21/10 and died in New York 1960 11/5. His (first?) wife Esther was born in Sweden about 1895. Maybe ha was married a second time (with Harriet?). Perhaps Paul Edman (dead in New York in February 1976 was her son.
Thank you
Björn Edman
