My grandmother, Maria Simonsdotter Forslund, born 13 Jun 1875 in Finland, obtained a passport in 1896, but does not appear on any passenger lists from Hango. She married Johan Karl Fernqvist, born Sweden abt 1875, in the US 1897. They returned on a miner recruitment trip to Finland and Sweden, where two of their children were born. They returned to MI in 1903. I have that record. Are there records of Swede-Finns who emigrated through Gothenburg 1896? Any help appreciated.

This could be the husband, but I can't find Maria in the Swedish databases.

Thank you both so much This probably is her first husband. When they returned to Sweden and Finland for those few years, their daughter Jennie Linnea Ferqvist was born in Grängesberg, Dalarna in 1901. Karen

I would be interested in the parentage of Karl Johan Fernqvist born 12/12/1871 in Ramsberg. From his death in 1903, a mining accident, his father is given as Per Erich Fernqvist and mother as Carolina. Thank you in advance. Karen

Bo,
Thank you for the information. Karl Johan was my maternal grandmother's first husband. After he was killed in a mine in 1903, she married my grandfather Johan Fredrik (Larsson) Stevenson who was also born in Sweden. I have most of his info. with a few loose ends still remaining.
Would anyone know where the Fernqvist name might have come from? Soldier name? Farm name?
Karen

The place Per Erik Fernqvist was from is called Vasselhyttan, in the old days spelled with a W.

Fern might suggest that somebody further back came from a place, with a name starting with Fern (now: Färn) like Färnebo parish in Värmland, or Västerfärnebo in Västmanland.

Qvist (now: kvist) means twig and is a common ending to Swedish surnames.

You can read more on Swedish names  here.

My aunt Jennie Linnea Fernqvist was born in Grängeberg, Dalarna 1 Sep 1901 before her parents returned to Michigan in 1903. As Karl Fernqvist was not naturalized in the US, would her birth be recorded in church records in Sweden? If so, where would I obtain a copy of that record?

Hi Karen,

There are extractions of birth, marriage, and death records from 1860-1920 which have been microfilmed. Look in the Family History Library Catalog to find the film numbers to order. They are catalogued under the name of the län --> utdrag ur ministerialböcker --> year --> type of record (birth, marriage, death).

My farmors sister had a daughter born in Jamestown, New York in 1907. I never could find that child's baptism record but the 1920 census showed there was a boy born in Sweden after that child's birth. I found the record of the birth/baptism of both the daughter born in Jamestown and the son born in Högsby, Kalmar (on the island of Öland)in the birth record extracts. (I'm amazed the daughter was baptised that late. She was about 3 or 4.)

I suggest that you order the appropriate film. Look under Kopparberg (the name of the län at that time).

Judy
