According to Minnesota Territorial and State Census 1885, Peter Nilson lives in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, together with his brother and family. In Census 1895, he is called Nils P Nilson, still staying with his brother's family, now  in Minneapolis Ward 9. Census 1895 states that he has been in the US for 13 years and is 32 years old.

I suppose this means that his complete name was Nils Peter Nilson (I know his friends used the name Peter) and that he left Sweden about 1882 at the age of 19.

Can anybody help me to find him and his family in Sweden???

If you tell us the brother's name it might be easier.

Also, have you  found him in Census 1900 where (normally) the year and month of birth is written

His brother's name is Joseph (or Joe). He is married to Anna Sofia (or Anna S or Annie) and they have a son Frank. The family lives together with Nils Peter (Nils P or Peter) in 1885 and 1895 (1890 Census is not available for Goodhue).

However, in the late 1890's, Joseph and his family moved to Washington State. Peter stayed in Minnesota, but there are a lot of people with the names Nils and Peter Nilson/Nelson and I don't know who is the right one.

By the way, Peter was an auditor, which means he might have had the same job in Sweden(?)

Found,in Census 1895, a Nels P Nelson, living together with Annie and Frank. No sign of Joseph.

I found a Anna and Frank in Republic, Ferry, Washington in Census 1900. Anna is a widow.

Are theese the right persons (just want to check before continuing)?

Yes, these are the right persons. Anna is a widow, at least she thinks so (Joseph went to the gold fields and never came back!). Peter stayed in Minnesota, but unfortunately I don't know his wife's name or anything else that could help us find the right Nils Peter. However, I know that Anna called him Peter, not Nils.

Joseph P Nilson is 29 years old in census 1880 and 36 in 1885. Gives us a name and a time range to check him. Even if it is a long shot, the man below is a possible person even if he emigrated to Germany. Perhaps he continued to US. Raise a question under Småland, Mönsterås to see if he has a brother that might be your Nils Peter, or if you can eliminate this Josef Peter

I have been checking Josef now. He moved to Germany in 1871, back in Mönsterås in 1873, to Stockholm in 1875. He COULD have emigrated from Stockholm and the Söder-cd says he was a sailor. However, in 1884 he moved back to Mönsterås and married.

So, unfortunately, this is not the right Josef.

I found a Nils Peter Nelson in the NY Passenger Lists on Ancestry.com, arriving from Bremen and Southampton on Aug 23, 1884. Birth year 1862. This could very well be the Nils Peter I am looking for.

Can anyone help me to find out where in Sweden he came from? As he went via Bremen, he is not in the Emibas.

A person could be on Emibas even if he/she emigrated from Bremen.

This man is listed as registering to leave his parish on 18 April 1884. That seems quite a long time before 23 August but perhaps the date was misread or perhaps he was just organized and told his parish he was leaving a long time before he actually left (and I've seen examples of that) or perhaps he is a different person.
