I am looking for Charles or Chas Madison that emigrated to the US in around 1886 or another US Census said 1888, so I am not positive.  I had thought he was Charles Mattson but I found out he changed his name after marrying Emma Mattson who was a widow.  I am not sure why he took her name but in the 1900 census in New Jersey they are Madison and in 1910 in Denver they are Mattson

I wood say that you Charles must called Karl or Carl in Sweden (they are many) and Madison ...we don't have a last name like that in Sweden.
Matt(s)son it is totaly OK.
But she was a widow as you tell us....did she have the same lastname as a singel-person---before the first married?

Mattsson, Mattson, Mattiasson, Martinsson, Mauritson....they are about 10 poeple called Carl/Karl left from Sweden to USA 1886 or 1888.

Did Emma Mattson have children called Sandin in the lastname? If so---the family left to US 1908--could it be right???  It look wrong to me after that I have read you question one more time.
We need some more to search about like a parish---birth-place.

I don't have her name before she married, her first husbands name was Oscar Mattson, so it could be that Charles was actually his brother because they were all at the same address.  Her middle initial is s but I don't have a previous last name, her daughter that was alive in the 1900 census was Thyra but she must have died before the 1910 census because it says she had 2 living children.  I am also thinking that Madison is not right.  If I find anything else, I will let you know.

Thanks so much

Could he possibly have been Danish? Madison does sound similar to Madsen, which I understand is the Danish equivalent of the Swedish name Mattsson.
