Dianne Brown

My GG-father and family lived in Malexander Ostergotland. They arrived in NY on the Baltic on May 17, 1888. His name is listed as C T Frey although I recently found out through the Swed Gen conference that his name at emigration was Carl Fredrik Freij (he was in the army). I want to check the emigration listing against the manifest names because the writing on the manifest is hard to decipher. The listing is
CT Frey b. abt 1854
Carl Frey b. abt. 1878
Elcie Frey b. abt 1872
Fred R Frey b. abt. 1848 (I believe this is Frederika Charlotte Frey)
John Frey b. abt. 1884
Olida Freay b. abt. 1879
Rustina Frey b. abt 1881
They may have traveled on a separate ticket.
I would also like some help on how to find records on Frederika. She was apparently married before. I subscribed to Genline and have found Carl's family but the Malexander records are apparently missing from about 1860-91.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Family History Library Catalog says: The church records for 1861-1890 are destroyed by fire.

You should be able to use the SCB records for Östergötland (and then search for Malexander) to find the births, marriages, and deaths for that time period. I think they also sent extractions of the household examination records (husförhörslängd) to the same place starting in 1860. Those should still exist.

Read about SCB records here.

You can also order those SCB records on microfilm.

In the soldiers? register (Centrala Soldatregistret) is listed the birth date of Carl Fredrik Johansson Freij, 13th of Oct. 1854. He belonged to the First life grenadier regiment (första livgrenadjärregementet)of Omberg company for Skärlunda file in Malexander. In Emibas (emigration CD) I cannot find him, nor any Freij departing in 1888.

The whole family is listed in the microfiche version of Emihamn (but when computerizing they often overlooked family members):

They left from Malexander, and then from Göteborg on 1888 April 27, all with tickets for New York:

Carl Fr. Freij age 34
wife Fredrika age 40
d. Elin age 16
s. Carl age 10
d. Alida age 9
d. Kristina age 7
s. Johan age 4
Father-in-law Gust. A. Gustafsson age 66

They are not found in Emibas as there are no records for Malexander for this time period.

Thanks for all your help. The naming system makes it extremely difficult to find anything out about Fredricka. I live near Jamestown, NY where many Swedish people settled. If I can help any of you, please let me know.

Dianne, The records for Malexander for the period of 1860-1904(?) were destroyed in a fire in 1904, but the earlier records had by then been delivered to the Regional Archives at Vadstena, Sweden, so they are still there.

The clergyman had to send in an abstract of the clerical survey for every 10th year to our Central Bureau of Statistics, so your Freij family should be possible to find in the 1880 abstract, that would tell where they all were born. I do not have access to it now, but can look it up later, if you wish.

Thank you! Thank you! I had just updated all my genealogy reports and now I have even more,  Frey reunion is Saturday so I'd better get busy. I believe Fredricka was married before she married Carl and had at least one child, Elin. I read once that soldiers might move into a deceased soldiers home, take his name and possibly marry the former soldiers wife. Perhaps that was the case here. Your help has been great.

by the way
if you go to webside www.lantmateriet.se
click on KartSök och Ortsnamn to the right
then click on the little arrow beside Välj kommun and scroll down to Boxholm and enter, then write Lyckö under Sökord and then click sök.
There you will have a map where Fredrika Charlotta where born in Malexander. If you click above the map on - and then on the map you will se it bigger and see better where it is in Sweden.

Such great stuff!!  I was able to find the records you mention on Gen line except for book AI:6 pg 95 Lycko. Not sure if you can give help or not. I'm so glad you typed in the records because they are very difficult for me to read. At the Swedish conference I attended, the man said that Fredrika's last name was Nyander. I don't know where he got this and at first I thought it was her first husband's name but I've read that the woman didn't take her husband's name until late 1900s. Couldn't download the map yet. I think my husband has a block set up for certain downloads so I'll wait for him to come home to help. I was able to get a map of Sjostugan from a different site. Will keep playing

Carolina Mathilda Gustafsdotter b.1850 one of her daughters name was Elin Sofia b1877may15
She married Frans Thure Boman b.1871 in Landeryd and they got the children
Brita Linn?a 1894dec05 died 1971may20 married 1924apr24 with Evert Teodor Johnsson b.1898jun03.
Alida Elisabet 1897may30 died 1952aug30 married 1924dec24 a man with surname Turn
Ellen Margareta b1899feb04 died unmarried 1978nov25
Karin Alexandra 1901aug16 died unmarried 1989may25

Elin Sofia b.1877may15 was I guess married twice because when she died her surname was Axén. She died 1850dec13.
In 20th centry married women use thier husbands surname, like nowadays. In the 19th centry and earlier married women never change their surname.
If we go on like this we maybe find living relatives to you in Sweden if you are intressted.
Take care from bosse
