Hi,

I have some questions regarding Hans Persson and his sister Karna Persdotter from Balkåkra. They both went to America in the the late 1880?s.I don?t know much about what happened to them after that and I really want to know.

Karna Persdotter was born 1862-03-11 in Balkåkra. She married Anders Andersson and they got son John Otto Anderson. He married Matilda Gustava Johnson and they lived in St. Paul Minneapolis. Someone who knows more about Karna, Anders and John Otto?

Hans Persson was born 1864-10-06 in Balkåkra. When he went to America he changed name to Herman Peterson. He was one of the founders of the Swedish Hospital in Seattle and he lived in Seattle his whole life and died 1942. He married Matilda and got three children, Olga, Anna and Albert. Olga married a man named Larkin, Anna a man named Johnson and Albert got the name Peterson after his father. I want to have some more information about these persons and the descendants? Can someone help me?

Thanks,

Regards Ulrika

About Herman Peterson and his wife:

***1900 federal census, Seattle, Washington:
Herman was 36, born Oct. 1863 in Sweden, and said that he emigrated in 1883.  He worked as a clerk in a hardware store. They owned their home without a mortgage, and they lived at 328 Belmont Ave. North in Seattle.
Matilda was 33, born March 1867, and the couple had been married 12 years.  They had 3 children.  Matilda listed her date of immigration as 1885, so she came 2 years after her husband.
Anna G. Peterson, age 11, was born Nov. 1888.  Olga, age 8, was born in June 1891.  Albert, age 6, was born in June 1893.  All three children had been born in Washington state.
***1910 census, Seattle, Washington.  Home was at 1120 (or 1123) 31st. avenue in Seattle.  They owned their home and had no mortgage on the property.
Herman - age 46, immigrated in 1882, was a clerk in a hardware store, was a citizen
Tilda (Matilda) - age 44, did not work.  She had had 3 children and all three were alive.
all children born in Washington:
Anna, age 21, was a stenographer at a store
Olga, age 18, did not work
Albert, age 16, did not work

***1917 World War I draft registration:
Albert was 23, married and living in Seattle.  His full name was Albert Herman Peterson, and he listed his birth as June 13, 1893.  He was born in Washtington.  His wife's name was not mentioned, and he did not list any dependent children at that date.  He was a clerk at the Fisher Flouring Mills, and his address looks like 56 N 35th Street. He was of medium height, med build, blue eyes and light brown hair.
*** 1920 census for Seattle, Washington:
Herman and Matilda Peterson lived in the same house, but none of their children lived with them.
Herman was 55 and worked as a buyer at Larson Implements.  His wife was 52 and was not employed.  Their year of immigration was listed as 1886 (Herman) and 1888 (Matilda), but immigration years are often incorrect on the census forms.  They owned their home.

***1920 census, Seattle, Washington:
ALBERT H. PETERSON was 26 years old, married, and rented a home at 633 N. 52nd Street in Seattle.  He worked as a clerk at a flouring mill.  His wife, Lillian, age 26, had been born in Minnesota and her parents were Norwegian.  They had one son, John Peterson, who was 1 year and 9 months old.  The census had been done on Jan. 12, 1920, so John had been born in 1918.

***1930 census, San Francisco, California:
Lillian Peterson had remarried, and lived in San Francisco with her son, John (age 12) and her new husband.  Her husband's name was K. R. Gilhausen, and he was a pharmacist.  I do not know if Albert died, or they divorced.

***I cannot find Herman and Matilda in the 1930 census, nor can I find Albert.

Death records: There is a listing for the death of an ALBERT H. PETERSON, age 54, on Sept. 19, 1947 in Seattle.  This is probably Herman and Matilda's son. There is a MATILDA PETERSON, age 88, who died on Dec. 13, 1954 in Seattle.

**DEATH INDEX for Washington:
HERMAN PETERSON:  date of death: 29-March 1942
at age 77

Hi Kerstin,

Thanks for all information. I am so happy and surprised that you have been able to find so much information about these persons.

Can I reach you on an emailaddress if I need to ask more, of course if you can and are willing to help me?

I don?t know where you have been able to find this information. But is it possible to get information about persons that are born in later than in the beginning of the 1900?s?

Thanks a lot for all help,

Regards Ulrika

On the 1920 federal census for St. Paul, Minnesota, John O. Anderson and his wife, Matilda A. Anderson, still lived at 782 Casa (or Case) Street.  Their childrens' names were Maxine H. (8 years old) and Turus J. (5).  John drove a delivery truck for a laundry.
I could not find them in the 1930 census.

There is a death listing for a John Anderson on July 1967 in Lucas County, Ohio.  That person was born on April 9, 1887, so it may be your John Anderson, although John Anderson is a very common name.  there is a listing for a Matilda A. Anderson who died in Minnesota on 19-October 1987 in Hennepin County (the county next to St. Paul).  I think that is John's wife.  Her birth date was listed as 18-June 1891.
Do you know that birth year of Anders Anderson?

Hi Karen,

Thanks a lot for that new information. My John Otto Anderson is born the 9th of April 1887, so it could be him. I have got the information that he should have died 19th of August 1932 in St Paul, but maybe that is wrong information.

For Mathilda I have got the information the she was born 28th of July 1891 and died 16th of September 1953 in St. Paul. But I am not totally sure of this information, it could be wrong.

Is it possible to search for them in some way according to this information?

I am so amazed that you can find this information. Is it possible for me to search for informations like this in some way or how does it work in USA?

I have found out that the parents of John Otto Anderson that I wrote about in my first letter probably changed names to Carrie Peterson and Andrew Anderson instead of Karna Persdotter and Anders Andersson. It is possible to find something on them too. Maybe they got more children than John Otto. I think they went to St. Paul and lived there.

Thanks a lot for all information once again!
Regards Ulrika

The John Anderson death that I told you about is wrong.  The MN death index shows a John O. Anderson who died in Ramsey County (St. Paul)on 20-August 1932.
There are so many John Andersons in the U.S. that I would never find the correct person unless you knew the approximate date of death, and you did!
By the way, the family lived on CASE street.  I looked up that street name in the website for the MN Historical society, and they have a few photos of old St. Paul, and CASE street is mentioned.
