Janice Soine

My grandfather was born in Sweden August of 1857.  My information has him being born in Skane province.  I only have limited information on him.
His father was Elias Pearson and I don't know his mother's name.  My grandfather, John, was the oldest of 13 children.  The siblings I know about are Hannah, Elna, Nels, Nellie, Carolina and Lena.  On every official form he has filled out in the U.S. he only says his place of birth is Sweden, but no town.
He appears in the 1880 U.S. Census, but I believe he immigrated just shortly before that from Sweden.  My other Swedish relatives(grandmother's side) sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia, but don't know if he did or not.

We are coming to Sweden this summer and would like to visit his home area if possible.

Janice, do you have more information?
Why do you think he is from Skåne?
Have you any idea where from Skåne..
He was born in August - do you have the day?
Did any of John?s siblings emigrate?
How did you get the information of the siblings and the father?
His wife ... did he meet her in Sweden?

I?ve tried to search, but it?s hard. If you knew something more, perhaps it would be easier. Anything...

I hope you?ll find your grandfather!

Regards Bodil

Janice,

If he didn't use Eliasson (son of Elias) as a patronymic name and instead used his father's patronymic name, then the E might stand for Eliasson.

His death certificate probably has a date of birth. Have you tried using the records of the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois? They have a website but their extensive records aren't online.

Where specifically did he live in the U.S.?

Bodil, Judy and Ulla - Thanks for doing the looking for me.  I think this last reply from Ulla maybe is the RIGHT family.  The information I have is his birth was August 30, 1857, but they may be a year off.

I got my information from  my father who is deceased now.  He made a CD with his family's information on it. (as much as he had been told)  In listening to the CD again I hear both Skane mentioned and also Skoning.  Maybe that will help.

I like the idea that the E might stand for Elias.  He was the oldest of 13 children.  I believe the birth order was John, Hannah, Elna, Nels, Nellie, Carolina and Lena.  The 4 girls (Hannah, Elna, Nellie, and Lena) came to America as did John and Nels. The girls all settled in the Minnesota area. I think my grandfather, John was the first to come.  The only one to remain in Sweden was Carolina.  We have no information on her.

My grandfather lived on a small farm in Sweden.  He became a coal miner in America, but I don't know if in Sweden too.  I think we have found him in the 1880 U.S. census in Port Perry, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.  Then he moved to Idaho and on to Whatacom, Washington, following the coal mining jobs.  He then bought a hotel/resturant and got married to my grandmother.  She was Swedish, but he did not know her in Sweden.  He died in 1914 in Sunnyside, Lake Whatcom, in Washington, later to become Bellingham, Washington.

If this is the correct family do you know anything about Carolina who remained in Sweden. Was her name Carolina Persson?

I really appreciate the work you are doing for me.  We were able to find lots of information on my Grandmother up in Backebo but John has remained a mystery.  We are anxious to visit your beautiful country.  Janice

Janice,
The family lived in Wasagården in the parish Halmstad in Skåne situated north east of the town Landskrona. Pls observe this Halmstad is not the same as the town Halmstad in Halland.

As you can see date of birth for Johannes is written 1856 30th of August. Could someone pls check Genline to find correct date of birth??

Halmstad

Many thanks to all who have helped with all of this information.  It is amazing how we have gone from nothing to the whole family.  I believe the ship to New York in 1880 just might be the correct one as the timing is about right, and we can't find him in Philadelphia where my other Swedish relatives came to.

I am interested in the sibling of my grandfather named Cecilia Eliasdotter.  My father never mentioned her.  She stayed in Sweden and had an offspring.  I am guessing from the above information his name would have been Johan Samuelsson.  He would have been my father's cousin.  Is it possible to find if he had any offspring?  Might I possibly have a distant relative still living there?

When we come to Sweden we would like to visit the area of Wasagarden.  We cannot find it on our map.  Is it no longer a town?  We do find Landskrona and know it is slightly NE of there.  Would someone in the area be able to direct us to the vicinity ?  Would the farm still be there?

I really do appreciate all of your very helpful and interesting information.  Janice

Janice!

I send some files via e-mail. And here just one of them:

It is a map from around 1880-1890 and you can see Vasagården No 5 which is the actual location.
I might add that my wife's ancestors were living at  Rönninge, Ottarp which is just some 3 miles SSW from Vasagården. But that was in the 18th century!

I suspect that No 5 might be the house to the left of the red crosshairs.

Boy, I am having trouble finding the location on our modern maps.  We can locate Halmstad which is NE of Landskrona.  If I get to Halmstad do you think someone in the area would be able to direct us to where Vasagarden was?  Or does it still exist?

Janice, try this:

www.eniro.se - on this page there is a red button called kartor (maps). Click it. Search for Vasagården. If you can?t write the letter å, search for Folmerstorp - it is situated nearby.

This map you can Zoom in and out. You can also get driving-tips - if you click om vägbeskrivning

Welcome to Sweden!

Bodil - Thanks for the map.  I think this is just what we wanted.

Now back to my grandfather's family.  Of all of the children of Elias and Sopia it appears only one stayed in Sweden, married, and had a family.  Cecilia Eliasdotter b. 1860 - married to Axel Samuelsson -b. 1862, son Johan - b. 1891.  Is there a way to find out if Axel married and had children?  They could still be alive and my cousins?

Johan Harry was born 1891-06-17 in Ottarp according to the birth-record (GID 100012.105.39500). It is written that he?s child number two, and there is no father registered. Because of this it?s hard to know his surname. (I guess Cecilia met Axel Samuelsson later)

Pictures from the birth-record

From Ottarp?s household records 1886-1895(GID 1327.11.35700)it says that Cecilia came from Hässlunda parish 1990-11-11. Probably is Johan Harry made there. There is no more child written that belongs to Cecilia, so hir first child is probably dead.

I first looked in a CD over living people in Sweden 1970, and couldn?t find him.
I then looked in a CD over dead people between 1950-1999. There are 98 men who died in Sweden with the same birthdate as Johan. In Malmö län, if he stayed here, there are 4 men that could be right - if he died after 1949. The CD doesn?t give birthplace or name to people who died between 1950-1970.

Here are the four men mentioned above:

I checked the newer CD Swedish Death Index 1947-2003. The unmarried man in Kågeröd is most likely Johan Harry.

He is listed as J Harry Samuelsson living at the Old Age Retirement Home in Kågeröd, and died June 20 1967. No place of birth is given.
