Is this Johannes Gunnarsson, born 1898, resident at the farm Skogsåkra in the parish of Horred who emigrated on the ship SS Bergensfjord, departing from Bergen (Norway) on 22 Nov 1916, arriving in New York (Ellis Island) 05 Dec 1916, and bound for Elburn (I think, not sure), Illinois?
This Johannes' closest relative is given as mother Nils Högström, something obviously very wrong there. Johannes is going to stay with his friend Andrew Carlson in Elburn, Illinois.
Ellis Island records series T715, Roll 2504, Frame (page) 713-712 (the pages are filmed in the wrong order; page 713 is the first page of the two-page manifest, 712 the second page).

If this is indeed the Johannes you are looking for, he shouldn't be too difficult to find this end.

Hi Lori,

I used the useful information from Ingela to check the Ellis Island database. I have used this site (http://www.tinyurl.com) to reduce the gigantic urls from the Ellis Island site to a more manageable size. These urls show the two manifest pages found by Ingela.

http://tinyurl.com/f8469

http://tinyurl.com/efjm4

The manifest is set up in a very confusing way, but if you count seven sets of relatives down from the top (since Johannes is on line 7), it says that the relative in Sweden is Johanna Carlsson, Skogsåkra, Horred. There is a by = village in Horred parish, according to the Rosenberg cd.

The manifest says that Johannes was born in Horred. The only Johannes born 1898 in Horred on the 1900 Swedish Census cd is the Johannes in this family, and note that the mother is the same as the one listed on the manifest and her residence also matches. Ingela found the correct person.

From the 1900 Swedish Census on the following subscription site:

http://www.svar.ra.se

Homeparish:  Horred
Residence:  Skogsåkra
County:  Älvsborg
Page:  20
Row:  21

Fam. nr 1

Widow Johanna Karlsdotter, b. 1856 in Horred Älvsborgs län, Hemmansägare (farm owner)
d. Ida Charlotta, b. 1891 in Horred Älvsborgs län
d. Julia Augusta, b. 1893 in Horred Älvsborgs län
d. Klara Matilda, b. 1897 in Horred Älvsborgs län
s. Johannes, b. 1898 in Horred Älvsborgs län

Fam. nr 2

Oskar Johansson, b. 1875 in Horred Älvsborgs län, Dräng (farmhand)

The 1890 Swedish Census on the same site shows that the father was August Gunnesson.

Homeparish:  Horreds annex-
Residence:  Skogsåkra
County:  Elfsborgs
Page:  20
Row:  38

Fam. nr 1

August Gunnesson, b. 1853 in Horreds annex-, hemmansegare (farm owner)
wife Johanna Karlsdotter, b. 1856 in Horreds annex-

Fam. nr 2

Anna Brita Andersdotter, b. 1867 in Istorp, Elfsb.l., piga (maid)

Fam. nr 3

Oskar Börjesson, b. 1872 in Istorp, Elfsb.l., dräng (farmhand)

The manifest said he was going to a place which looks like Elburn. (I agree with Ingela.) I looked on the online 1895 U.S. Atlas site and found the index for locations in Illinois. There was indeed a place called Elburn in Kane County, Illinois. (I don't see Elburn listed in my modern atlas, however.)

http://www.livgenmi.com/1895/IL/Index/e.htm

This 1894 Kane County map shows the location of Elburn. St. Charles is not far away, so this seems to be further evidence pointing towards Ingela's find being your person.

Perhaps some of the links on this Google search will lead you to information or some place to ask for further information.

Good luck!

Hi again,

From the Emihamn database of CD Emigranten, made from registrations with the Swedish port police before leaving Sweden:

First name: JOHANNES
Last name: GUNNARSON
Age: 18     Gender: M
Parish: HORRED     County: P (Älvsborg)
Port: GÖTEBORG
Date: 1916 11 21
Destination: ELBURN
Fellows: NEJ
Source: 103:661:721

Here is another young man from Horred who was traveling to Elburn at that time. (He is #10 on the arrival manifest, I think.)

First name: JOHAN ARON
Last name: JOHANSSON
Age: 18     Gender: M
Parish: HORRED     County: P
Port: GÖTEBORG
Date: 1916 11 21
Destination: ELBURN
Fellows: NEJ
Source: 103:661:720

Although I can't find Elburn in my modern atlas, it apparently exists. I looked for Kane County, Illinois + Elburn on Google and found:

Elburn and Countryside Community Center
525 N. Main Street, Elburn, IL (630) 365-9090

Very sloppy of me not to see that the relative was listed above the address! Thanks Judy for correcting me! (I still wonder about mother Nils on the next line though ...)
Yes, I also found an indication (by way of Google) that this totally unknown Elburn wasn't too far from St. Charles which made me think that this was indeed Johannes' destination.

By the way, I never use Ellis Island's search engine but always Steve Morse's. It saves time and also I don't have to bother about URLs, just note the series, roll and film - and since this is the original archive registration it will never change, which the URLs might well do...
