Nancy Elofson

I am seeking any information on Johanna Carlson, a widow who emigrated in 1889.  She was born in 1840.  These facts are verified by the 1900 US Census for Traverse County, Minnesota.  She may have been accompanied by Emma Gustafson, born 1889.  Johanna Carlson was the widow of Carl Johannson, said to have been a watchmaker, and the daughter of Swen Larson. The only Swedish place names we have are Bohult, where her sister married, and Rävaryd, where her brother farmed. Any information most appreciated.  Nancy Elofson

Emma Gustafson was born in 1884, not 1889.  Sorry.

There is only one Rävaryd in Svenska Ortnamn 1999, in Hinneryd parish, Kronoberg county. There are many Bohult, but one of them is in Hinneryd parish.

Do you have the names of the brother and sister?

Perhaps she is this one from Emigranten 2001 CD, if she used a patronymic surname:

Name: JOHANNA C SVENSSON

This seems to be the person found by Bo but she was listed as unmarried.

Arbeterska is a woman who works.

Immigration years, as found on U.S. Censuses, are not necessarily accurate, nor do they necessarily match the dates written in other censuses. I have found many examples of incorrect immigration years but here are two examples. Every census for my farfar says he emigrated in 1890 but several Swedish records confirm he was in Sweden in 1890 and left in 1891. I have three census immigration years for his brother and none of those were found to be correct when I checked emigration records from Sweden.

I found two people with her name living in Hinneryd parish using the 1880 Swedish Census on the SVAR site.

This one was living in the correct location in that parish. This one is listed as a widow, so perhaps the one found on Emihamn and Emibas is the other one. This one is listed as Baptist. Her children were listed as unbaptised.

I cannot thank you both enough!  This information was close to being lost, being tied to stories of the old country, but no facts.  Johanna Christina had children Axel, Elof and Ida, all the right ages, and was a Baptist (against her father's wishes, we've been told).  The children would not have been baptized as Baptists do not believe in infant baptism. From family information, Johanna Christina's siblings were: Anna, married Johannes? in Bohult; Lars (who farmed in Rävaryd, and had a daughter Julia); Johanna (married Renstrom?, Swenson? emigrated 1886); Stina (married Johnson?, emigrated 1864).  Thanks to you, when we visit Sweden in May we can visit the grandmother's home area with some certainty.  In the USA, Johanna and her family were zealous Baptists in contrast to most Minnesota immigrants, who were of the Lutheran faith.   Again, a thousand thanks.  We didn't dream such help was possible, and we are very, very grateful.

You can find Johanna Christina Svensdotter from Rävaryd in Hinneryd HFL AI:11 1851-1856 page 149 (GID 829.15.100600) at N.39 Räfvaryd:

- wife Britta Andersdotter, born 1802-02-09.
- d. Johanna, born 1839-06-21, moved to page 155.
- d. Johanna, born 1832-12-25, moved to page 313.
- d. Johanna Kristina, born 1840-11-05.

In the next HFL AI:12 1856-1860 page 173 (GID 829.17.35500):

- Sven Larsson, born 1798-04-07
- wife Britta Andersdotter, born 1802-02-09, died 1860-07-04.
- d. Johanna Kristina, born 1840-11-05.

The 1864 birth of Elof is in Hinnaryd CII:2 births 1854-1866 page 225 (GID 829.23.50700):

Correction: Johanna was born 1829, the second Johanna should be:

- d. Stina, born 1832-12-25, moved to page 313.

And in the Hinneryd HFL AI:10 1838-1844 page 148 (GID 829.14.61600) the family looks like this:

- Sven Larsson, born 1798-04-07
- wife Britta Andersdotter, born 1802-02-09.
- s. Lars, born 1822-10-09.
- d. Anna, born 1825-02-14, moved to page 155.
- d. Johanna, born 1829-06-21.
- d. Stina, born 1832.
- d. Johanna Kristina, born 1840-11-05.

Thank you so much for this information, which both agrees with and adds to what we had. If I might ask another question, what does HFL signify, and does a person being moved to another page have a meaning?

We have located Hinneyrd on our map now and we are very pleased to have this information to pass on to our family.

Thanks again, Nancy

HFL = Husförhörslängd (household examination roll), like a parish cencus, but kept updated continously.

Moved to another page means moved to another place in the parish, becuse people are entered in the HFL after where they lived.

Here is Rävaryd on a map at  hitta.se

Sven Larsson's parents were Lars Svensson (1771- 1812) and Ingegerd Jönsdotter (1769-1836). Both families have lived in Hinneryd at least 4-5 generations since the 1600's.
