Don't have much info but am looking for my gr-grandfather August Valentine born 1835 in western Sweden. Immigrated to Illinois about 1869. May have had a brother named Louis. Any ideas on how to get more information would be appreciated.

Is Valentine supposed to be his last name? I can't find any August with last name Valentine (etc.) or any August Valentin (etc.) born about the time you mentioned and emigrating about the time you mentioned with any last name when I use the Emibas CD. Perhaps he changed his last name from a patronymic name to Valentine, or perhaps he is one of the people not covered by Emibas, which is only about 75% completed.

Try to find more information in the U.S. Try searching censuses, death certificates, marriage applications, etc. Also check out the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. They have a website but their extensive records aren't online.

Hi Candace,

I found this man on the Emibas CD, maybe he is the one you are looking for. His birth year is different from the August you posted but he could be the right person anyway.
Here is his data from the Emibas CD:

Post 618688

Valentinsson, August
Hemmansägarson (unmarried man)

b. 12/30/1838 in Börstig, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland)

Emigrated 4/26/1867
from Axtorp Lunnag., Kinneved, Skaraborgs län (Västergötland)
to Nordamerika

Source: SVAR; Household Examination Roll, vol. Kinneved AI:7, p. 18; Migration Roll, vol. Kinneved B:2

Emibas migration file ID: Kinneved R 1867 001

This is a screen print of the census report when he left the parish.

This help is so amazing.I had found the 1880 census info and quite a bit of info in USA--but hadn't much of an idea how to access info in Sweden...especially since I had so little to go on. August's story is so tragic-he was murdered in 1886 by 3 underage drunken drifter type men who beat him to his death because he was Swedish...he left behind 4 small children(the youngest was only 4 years old). From all accounts he was a good church going man who worked hard to provide for his family. I want to be sure his story is not lost to future generations in our family. Your help is much appreciated.

Candace,
If your August is the one mentioned in the above discussions you might want to have this from the ministerial books showing births. It might mean that you will have to revise the year of his birth.

I have rechecked the inscription on August's headstone and the year of birth is 1838 so I'm sure this is the correct info. ALso sounds like Lars may be Louis Valentine, as in some old Rockford city directories, Louis and August were listed at the same address. Later info shows they lived only a few houses away from each other.  If the records on Lars show his wife's and daughter's names that would also help. Charles may well be August's brother Carl. Is there anything on Carl Gustaf emigrating to USA. Again you are all great-this is like Christmas!!

Candace,
I just checed the records for Lars Vallentinsson. This information is taken from the household records for Skaraborg, Vartofta - Åsaka, AI:7 1859 -1868. GID 564.9.56200
Lerbacken:
Lars Johan Vallentinsson, born Feb 16, 1834 in Börstig
Wife Johanna Johansdotter born Sept 4, 1844 in Åsaka.
Daughter Amanda Christina born Feb 25, 1865
There was another daughter , Ida Maria born in 1866 who died in 1867.
The family is then crossed out of the records and a note says:Amerika ? March 1868.

Could this be Louis? Amanda = Ada???
Evaluate and decide

The info I've got on Louis Valentine shows his wife as Hannah..birth year is a match to Johanna--so this is starting to look like a sure thing...the daughter Ada was born in Illinois in 1869 so I don't think Ada is Amanda...wrong year and not born in Sweden...but with all your help I am convinced Louis Valentine was Lars Valentinsson and August's brother.
Many thanks,
Candace

The 1880 Census shows the family Kerstin Thölix has already given you. A search for Amanda Valentine born in Sweden 1865 came up with this:

Amanda Valentine, 15 yrs old, works as a servant in a family in Rockford. There is Amanda.

Hi Candace,

Or rather ”hi, relative”.

”Your” August Valentine was, with almost 100% certainty, born Dec 30, 1838 in the farm Nolgården (=Nordgården; the farm to the north in the village) of the village Sonarp in the parish of Brismene, some 10 mi SSW to the town of Falköping in the former Skaraborgs län, right between Sweden?s two largest lakes Vänern and Vättern. His parents were Valentin Valentinsson (1807-1881) and Inga Maja Eriksdotter (1807-1884). He had 4 brothers: Efraim Vilhelm (1831 - 1917, stayed in Sweden, married); Lars Johan/Louis (1834 - 1906, emigrated 1868 to Rockford, IL, married); Anders Petter (1836 - 1910, emigrated 1869 to Rockford, married twice) and Karl Gustaf (1843 - ?, stayed in Sweden, married).
August was married in USA to Sofia Carolina Nyberg, born May 25, 1849 in Kyrkefalla parish, Skaraborgs län. I know about 3 children; Tekla Maria, born July 31, 1873; Albin Nathanael, born June 30, 1878 and Frideborg, born Oct 13, 1882, all in Rockford. They were all members of the 1st Lutheran Church in Rockford, IL until 1883. The data about the family have been extracted from the church records of this church.
I also know that the son Albin Valentine was married May 18, 1904 in Rockford to Hulda Botvida Nelson, born July 28, 1878 in Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden. Albin and his wife were members of the Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Church in Rockford, and lived on 1307, 6th Street, Rockford, IL.
How are we related, then? Actually in two ways!
The parents of the above Valentin (III) Valentinsson were Valentin (II) Valentinsson (1775-1823) and Annika Eriksdotter (1774-1809).
The parents of Valentin (II) were Valentin (I) Valentinsson (1742-1803) and Emerentia Christina Lundgren (1734-1807).
This Valentin (I) was son of Valentin Streng (1674 - 1756, corporal) and Catharina Larsdotter (1699 - 1773), my mm mf mm mf and mm mf mm mm (where m = mother and f = father, so mm = maternal grandmother).
Furthermore Emerentia Christina was daughter of Johan Lundgren (1685 - 1735, second lieutenant) and Anna Catharina von Krakewitz (1693 - 1754; of Swedish and Pomeranian nobility), my mm mf mf ff and - fm.

Please contact me, and I will help you with further data about your Swedish ancestors, as well as with other American relatives in this line, and of course I would also be very happy to know about your closest relatives!

Regards
Per-Olof
