Apparently Americanized his name upon emmigration, went by Gust Levin.  Born about 1871.  Married Kristina Edlund in the US.  No known affiliation while they lived in Sweden.  Gust had several brothers, among them was Axel, who also came to the US.

Charles/Carl was another brother.  They all went to Michigan first, then settled in central Pennsylvania.  Their father came to US before them and when he was last heard from, he was in Iron Mountain, Michigan.  The LEVIN family name was possibly an Army Name that the rest of the family adopted.

Are you looing for his background in the U.S., or are you looking for his Swedish roots?

2006-06-04, 04:24
Svar #3

AJ

His Swedish roots, although we do wonder what became of Gust's father here in America.  Gust's youngest son (of 6 children) was born in 1911, so we are assuming he emmigrated in the late 1880's or early 1890's.

Consider the following family group. Information from the household examination rolls of Österplana parish 1870-1893 and from the Emibas databse of Swedish emigrants 1840-1930:

Soldier
August Andersson Leo
*1845 Oct.16. in Hangelösa parish (Skaraborgs län) +1882 Sep.3. in America
(Received a working permit to the US in 1880)
married 1867 Dec.6.
Maja Johansdotter
*1840 Dec.27. in Österplana parish (Skaraborgs län) Emigrated to the US 1900 July.24.
Children:
1. Carl Johan Leo (Levin)
*1868 Sep.3. Österplana
Emigrated to the US 1889
2. Gustaf Leo (Levin)
*1871 Jan.16. Österplana
3. Anders Nicolaus Leo (Levin)
*1873 Jan.6. Österplana
Emigrated to the US 1890
4. Anna Mathilda Leo
*1875 Feb.1. Österplana +1877 April.11. there
5. Albert Julius Leo (Levin)
*1877 Feb.2. Österplana
Emigrated to the US 1900 (with the mother)
6. Axel Wilhelm leo Levin
*1880 July.4. Österplana
Emigrated to the US 1898.

This family resided at a place called Kohlebäck in Österplana parish. The father was a soldier with the Skaraborgs Regemente (Nr 403), before he left for the US in 1880, only to die two years later. Leo was his soldier's name, which he evidently changed upon arrival in the US, causing his sons to do likewise. Most of them are listed as Leo Levin in the passenger departure lists.

I believe this to be the family that you are looking for.

Best wishes
Ted Rosvall

Österplana is located between Lidköping and Mariestad on the mountain of Kinnekulle. All in Västergötland, south of Lake Vänern.

Ted,
I am convinced that is them! I has so little to go on, I didn't expect results so soon.  Is there a site online where I can see passenger departure lists?  I don't see an emmigration date for Gustaf.  He definitely came to the US.  I'm going to have to ask some of my family about Anders Nicolaus Leo Levin.  He wasn't mentioned in anything I have.  An interesting footnote: Axel rode with Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West Show.  My dad has an old tin-type photo of the two of them.

Thank you all so much.  You have just helped me make my dad very, very happy!  He was thrilled to finally learn his great-grandparents names.  He never heard them mentioned and anyone who may have known them is gone.  We are now determined to find Maja Johansdotter Levin's grave.  We never knew what name to look for.  I would also like to try to research back even further.  I didn't think I'd find this much so soon with so little to go on.  Especially the misspelled Senecula.  __  AJ

AJ,
There is a Gust L Leo on the Chicago in April 1890. He was then 19 years old. There is nothing about destination.. Perhaps?

Karin,
I believe August was last heard from in Iron Mountain, Michigan.  His sons first went out there before coming to PA to live, so that could be my Gust.  __  AJ

AJ,
This information is from the passenger list of the vessel City of Chicago. Gust is 19, from Sweden via Christiania (Oslo) a laborer on his way to Pa (Pennsylvania?). You can read the passenger list if your E-mail is OK. I sent it .

I have found what I think is contradictory information and need help figuring it out.  Hangelösa parish birth record vol. C:1 page 45 states that August was born 16 Oct 1845 as the son of soldier Anders Glad and his wife Anna Cajsa Olofsdotter.  His soldier record lists Greta Andersdotter as his mother.  Could one be a second marriage for his father?  Also, the above information that August died 3 Sep 1882 in America -- are there any further details available on Emibas?

In the Hangelösa HFL AI:6 1853-1859 page 225 (GID 795.23.12000) and AI:8 1859-1864 page 137 (GID 795.18.64000) you can see:
- The father canged his name from Glad to Lätt.
- He had the same wife at least from August's birth to his death 1863-02-27.
- August moved to Österplana 1864-10-21.

The death information is not from Emibas (at least I think so) but from the Österplana HFL AI:9 1878-1888 page 66 (GID 682.5.39700).

There is a death date, and a remark that he is dead in America according to (information?) by several persons.

I need help reading Genline: In GID 618.16.73000, Anders' birth record, in what order were the grandparents' names recorded? What is the note to the left of their names?  And I can't make out all of the grandparents' surnames.  Thank you.

I need help reading another name: GID 601.60.76700, Anna Cajsa, born 20 Aug 1821.  I can't read her father's last name.  What was his occupation?  I really appreciate your help!  I'm slowly learning more Sewdish, but could never get far with this without you.  Thanks.

GID 795.18.64000: the sons Johan Petter and August both leave in 1859, and both return 1863, and then August leaves for Österplana 1864.

Their notes are about certificates for working in other parishes and on a railway, and the dates they were issued.

GID 601.60.76700, Anna Cajsa, born 20 Aug 1821: parish shoemaker Ol. Carlsson, wife Maria Johansdotter, Skaraberg.

I have another question.  In GID 601.44.105100, I see what may be the Anna Cajsa I'm looking for from the birth record GID 601.60.76700.  I don't believe the parents' names match up, though.  It's very hard to read. I can't seem to find her family in any other household examination records from the time of her birth.  Am I overlooking something?

AJ, the family you are looking for can be found on GID 1567.15.71800
Skaraberg is located within Skara/landsförsamling, a sub-parish to Skara/stadsförsamling. Both parishes share the same books for births, marriages and deaths, which is why you find Anna Cajsa within the Skara/stadsförsamling records - but she did actually belong to the contry parish (landsförsamling).
Best wishes
