Glenda Hamilton

My great grandfather Andrew Edstrom immigrated to Canada in May 1908 with his wife and four children - Eric, Elsie, Johnnie and Olaf.  I know Elsie, my Grandmother was born in 1900.  Andrew was born around 1863.  I also know that Andrew had two brothers who came to Canada before him.  They were also Eric and Olaf Edstrom.  Eric only stayed here a few years and went back to Sweden.  Andrew was from Trehorningsjo.
Any help finding information about how they came, or about where they lived, etc. would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Have not yet found emigration for Anders/Andrew. Three siblings found, however. The date is when they showed up with the port police in Göteborg.

Below emigration information you will find Edström family in 1890,, from Census.

I don't seem them on Emigranten Populär 2006, but these people are found on that cd. Perhaps they are related since they left from the same parish.

I don't have time to search the censuses in Sweden to find this family but you can check this free site for the 1890 Swedish Census.

There is an unindexed 1911 Census for Canada online. Perhaps they stayed in this Standley and can be found there.(My world atlas doesn't not list any Standly, Standley, or Stanley in Saskatchewan, however.)

I wonder if Standley might have been an error reading Hanley. My dad lived in Kenaston, Saskatchewan as a child, and on vacation, we visited some of his friends who lived in Hanley. That is just a guess.

This is the link for the unindexed Canadian census for 1911.

I think it is indexed on Ancestry.com but my subscription doesn't cover Canada.

There is no Standley on that census but there is a place called Stanley in Saskatchewan.

This is the start page, with a couple of options listed for Stanley, and then you will need to check a few pages for each option. Click on Associated Images and decide whether to use a PDF reader or Mr. Sid, whatever that is, and browse the images. I hope you can find your Edström family.

Judy:

Thanks for your help, it should be Hanley.  I live in Saskatchewan.

My Dad has a history book from Dinsmore, where Andrew (Anders) settled and it tells of Hanley being the nearest centre for supplies.  Hanley is actually about 80 miles from Dinsmore.

The census from Saskatchewan is not as easy to read as other regions, so I had not actually looked at it yet.  Many of the towns that are in existance now, were not then, or have since changed their names.

Hi Glenda,

My dad grew up on a farm near Kenaston, also in Saskatchewan. He lived there from 1907-1926, so he spent most of his childhood and young adulthood there.

I didn't have trouble finding my dad's family on the 1911 census. They were at the bottom of the second page I checked, and it was reasonably easy to read.

I've been to Kenaston (and Young, Hanley, Saskatoon, etc., which were places my dad had friends from his youth) a few times. My cousin went to Kenaston a few years ago, so it is still there ---- small, but there.

I own a local history of both Kenaston and Hanley. The one from Hanley was written by high school students in 1954-1955. There is no index of names.

You can also use the following site to find some of these people in the different census years. The 1911 one is not yet fully indexed.
http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

You will also find Anders' and Olof Fredrick's Death Registrations in British Columbia. Try:
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-2A775DF/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths

But perhaps you already know this?

I am going through the information above and adding into my family tree program and am a little confused with the naming customs.

I understand some of the formatting, but what I am having trouble with is for instance - Elsa Margareta (my Grandmother) has a full name of Elsa Margareta Andersdotter Edstrom.  So then is she refered to as just Elsa Edstrom or Elsa Andersdotter Edstrom?

Thank you as well for the information regarding BC archives.  I did not know about it.  I had found Anders death record as indexed with Ancestry.com but had not thought of the archives.

I really appreciate all the help everyone has given me today.
