P. Wallin

Erick E. Wallin born Sept. 25, 1865 died 1953. Peter (Per?) E. Wallin born March 1, 1872 died 1951. Carrie Wallin Unknown.
I've heard stories they were from Alfta, Helsingland or near Varmland.  Surname may have been Valin or even Erickson.  Erick settled in Atwater, MN, Peter settled in Pequot Lakes, MN. Their half brother may have stayed in Sweden.  I'm hoping to find information on their parents and where they were from.  Also if there's any relatives left in Sweden.  Thanks, Paul Wallin

Thank you Judy,
The information on Per Wallin was very helpful. I'm not sure about the other two, but I'll keep the information just in case. Thank you again.

Hi Paul,

In the Swedish census 1890 there are two Wallin families in Alfta parish. But of course no proof for either of these related to your people. That must be established by looking in the parish records, as hinted by Judy.

Best kandidate based on first names is the soldier Eric Wallin b. 1841, wife Brita Hansdotter b. 1840, son Jonas b. 1881. All in Alfta parish. Home is Tranberg #5.

The other family is Johan Fredrik Wallin b. 1827, blacksmith, with wife Julia Törnquist b. 1825 and daughter Margareta Helena b. 1867. They are living in Hässja, and are all born in other parishes than Alfta.

My gut feeling is the soldier. Good luck!

Regards, Jan

Thanks Jan,
I'm taking some good advice and going back over my notes.  I have: Erick E. Wallin was confirmed in Alfta Sweden in March of 1880 and married Ellen E. Dahivig on May 11, 1888. She was born Oct. 1866 in Malmo, Sweden.  According to the U.S. census they emigrated to the U.S. in 1884. A Feb. 12, 1953 newspaper clipping stated Erick and his sister Carrie arrived in 1883. I'll go with the census date of 1884. Thanks again for your help, I'll do some more digging. Paul Wallin

Paul,

According to your data listed above, this couple was married in 1888 but emigrated in 1883 or 1884.  That means they were married in the USA (in which case you will need to look for the woman's emigration under her maiden name).

That maiden name, Dahivig, is probably a misspelling of Dahlvig, a pretty uncommon name which anyhow is used by half a dozen telephone subscribers in the Malmö area.

I found the name Anders Dahivig on a web page mentioning him as president of the IKEA company.  That is probably also Dahlvig misspelled.

Hi Paul,

Since Anders suggested that Dahivig is probably the name Dahlvig, I did a search on the Emigrant CD. There were only three hits.

Maybe this is your Elin. Elna is close to that name, Dalvigh is a very similar spelling, she seems about the right age, and she emigrated in 1884.

First name: ELNA
Last name: DALVIGH
Age: 17     Gender: K (kvinna = woman)
Parish: RESLÖV     County: M (Malmöhus)
Title/Note: PIGA (maid)
Port: MALMÖ
Date: 1884 07 17 (date of registering with the police to leave Sweden)
Destination: NEW YORK
Fellows: JA (Ja = yes. She traveled with someone else on the ticket.)
Source: 1884:1744:1741

She traveled with:

First name: JOHANNES
Last name: DALVIGH
Age: 14     Gender: M
Parish: RESLÖV     County: M
Title/Note: GOSSE (boy)
Port: MALMÖ
Date: 1884 07 17
Destination: NEW YORK
Fellows: JA
Source: 1884:1744:1741

This person left three years earlier, without the h at the end of the name.

First name: BENGT
Last name: DALVIG
Age: 38     Gender: M
Parish: RESLÖV     County: M
Title/Note: DRÄNG (farmhand)
Port: MALMÖ
Date: 1881 07 14
Destination: SVEDE GROVE
Fellows: NEJ (Nej = no, he traveled alone)
Source: 1881:3424:1476

I checked the 1890 Swedish Census, on the fee-based Arkion site, and this was the only hit for the entire country of Sweden.

Homeparish: Ekeby
Residence: Gedsholm
County: Malmöhus
SVARvolume: 000218  Card nr: 3
Page: 1  Row: 48

Persons in the household
Fam nr: 1
Johannes Dalvig born 1857 in Söderviddinge M. l.(M.l. = Malmöhus län = county), statdräng

wife Christina Johannesdotter born 1865 in Skatelöf Kronob. l.(Kronoberg län)

d. Hilma Eleonora born 1889 in Söderviddinge M. l.(M.l. = Malmöhus län = county)

The modern spelling of Söderviddinge is Södervidinge, according to Cradled in Sweden.

Maybe they are connected, since the name is uncommon.

Good luck!

Judy

Wow, this is like finding major pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.   I want to thank all of you for your input.  Because of your help, I can now tie Per and Erik together without just calling it the Wallin family tree.  Thank you, I still have more research with Karin and other family members but this sure helps.  Thank you again, Paul Wallin

If your family is indeed from Alfta, you must find a way to get photocopies of Alfta släktbok (Alfta Family Book) pages pertaining to your family.  I have mine because of several wonderful Swedish people who sent mine to me a long time ago. Alfta släktbok pages are cross-indexed, so that you can find the pages where parents are listed with their parents and children are listed with spouses and their children: if they parents and children were in Alfta.  If not, it usually tells where they came from or to where they went.  It also lists occupations and causes of death.
