From what port would have a family from this county probably have come through in Sweden? What I know about them follows:

Immigrated in 1881 and settled in Red Wing, Minnesota
Charles (Carl) Carlson age 56
Eva Charlotte Carlson age 52
Charles (Carl) John Carlson age 21
Caroline Carlson age 14

What I would like to determine is what parish in Ostergotland they came from? Can they be found on the emigrant list? Thanks to anyone who could help.

The parish you shall find them in is Tja:llmo,
or in Swedish Tjällmo, Motala, Ostergotland.

There I found that Carl J, 22 years
Eva Charlotta, 52 years and
Carolina, 11 years

together with
Carl W Carlsson, 24 years old,
 emigrated 1881, April 15 from
Gotenburg to RedWing,Minnesota

Hi Scott! Your Carlsons have nothing to do with Carlson of Östergötland mentioned above. You know both parish of birth and county (län)Västmanland, and could post a more specific question under the parish. Anbytarforum works with provinces (landskap) in stead of counties, and Tärna is in Uppland - here Anbytarforum: Landskap: Uppland: Socknar: Tärna even if it doesn't seem to be a very active discussion there.

I looked for your family on the CD Emigranten (which cover most emigrants from Sweden) and in 1881 only 7 people left that parish. There is a family where the ages but note the names match your information:
C.P. Carlsson, age 29, parish Tärna (county U which is Västmanland), leaving Göteborg (Gothenburg) on 6 May 1881 (ships not mentioned) for Werona, travelling with wife Elida, 30 years old, and daughters Helina 2 years and Elisa 1 year old.
The source code (Källkod) for the original records at the Regional Archives (Landsarkivet) in Göteborg is 17:552:20777. The original record is the contract which will give the information if the transcription to the register (that later were made into the CD) is correct, and the name of the agent and ship line, and the feeder ship to the UK - which was the normal route - not the name of the ship to the US.

There are more information on Swedish genealogy here at Rötters English section Swedish roots www.genealogi.se/roots/ and here: www.swedeninfo.com/tracing.htm

Not all Carlsons are related, as Carlsson means son of Carl and the old Swedish way of forming the last name was the patronymic, see Swedish Roots.

Kind regards,
Eva Dahlberg

Hi Scott,

This is your family:
Carl Petter Carlsson, born 1852 Jan. 8 in Tärna
w. Anna Mathilda lindblom, born 1851 Mar.22 in Simtuna
d. Hilma Elida, born 1878 Apr.26 in Tärna
d. Elin Wilhelmina, born 1880 May 27 in Tärna

They all emigrated in 1881 from Smedsbo in Tärna (p.22 in the cl. survey).

Next step for you is to get hold of the church records for Tärna, which you can do through your closest Family History Center.

Check the catalog like this: Place search: Tarna, Vastmanland, and then chose Church records >Film notes

Happy hunting!
