Do you have any information about in which province this village was situated? Who was the person that came from there? Name and dates needed.

There is a village by name of Skävshult (old spelling Skäfshult) in Hycklinge parish in the province of Östergötland. Could that be the right place?

I am looking for Johan Peter Johansson born in 1823. He raised his family in the village of Shafshult from the parish of Sodra Vi of Kalmar. He built his home next to the priest home. Hope this helps

Hi Leonard,
In the village you refere to I find this family:

Södra Vi AI:14 (1850-1856) Bild 48 / sid 39

The couple was married 12/2 1848 according to the same source.

Here are som other answers to questions on the cottage Källerum where the family lives. http://aforum.genealogi.se/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=44&post=933457#POST933457

Kind regards from,

I already have that information. What I was looking for was some history on Shafshult. Also I am interested in finding pictures of the priest home in the village especially from 1850 to 1900.

Thanks for your help

I've found some photos of the parsonage of Södra Vi - there's a 1901 photo, which shows it painted barn red; the traditional house color in Sweden. Later, it was repainted in white, as this 1934 view (and closeup) shows. There are no photos labelled Skäfshult in these photo databases.

Rosenberg's geographic-statistical encyclopedia from the early 1880s has an entry on Skäfshult, but it only says it's a village in Södra Vi parish. The entry on Södra Vi says the area is rocky with forests and marshes. There are a few large villages in the parish, one of them named Södra Vi (which has a post station, residential college for adult education, spa, tannery, brewery and sawmill). A market is held yearly in September, and there is also an inn. Other industries in the parish are paper mills, a distillery, and several sawmills.

Leonard Franklin! Skäfshult in Södra Vi is a village ca 5-6 km from the parsonage, where Johan Peter Jonsson built a ”backstuga” (house with no land of his own) called Källerum around 1850 and he lived there with his family, a house that was kept in the family for 75 years according to the book ”Torp och backstugor i Södra Vi”(1981). His daughter Charlotta (Lotta) dead 1916 married Erik Nilsson, who died 1923 when cutting trees. He was a man of whom stories were told. Once he was lost in the forest and when village people found him he had turned his cap and his waistcoat backwards to be able to find his way home.Källerum was pulled down in 1930. Johan Peter Jonsson was a farmhand at the parsonage when he married his Carolina Larsdotter in 1820, who was born in Ungsbo, a thorp under the parsonage. JP Jonsson farmed Ungsbo 1847-51. There his father-in-law Lars Andersson Rossi lived with his family (married twice; 9 children). Former soldier who later became ”kyrkvaktare”, that is he tended to the church and churchyard. Rossi lived with son Lars Johan in Ungsbo but moved finally 1851 to the poorhouse as did in 1856 his second wife  Stina Lena Månsdotter b 1795 d 1869. She was then ”fattigsköterska”, nurse in the poorhouse, ”kommandora” as in Astrid Lindgren´s famous book  Emil i Lönneberga. All this from the book about Torp. Many years ago I helped another Swedish-American with this Rossi-family so I have a long family tree behind the children of the Källerum family.  I suppose you have it already.

Leonard!
According to the book of the dead for Södra Vi, Karolina Larsdotter died on the 10th of October 1891 while her husband Johan Petter Jonsson lived on until the 28th of August 1908.
(Södra Vi C:11 p.205 and Södra Vi C:12 p.63)
