While searching some 1600s mantalslängder, I saw a family listed at kyrkladan,
which appears to translate in English to 'church barn.'  Somewhat confusing to
me, as usually a barn is for farm storage of hay, feed, and animals.  However, this
family was shown at the same place from 1660 through 1667.  The man's Bouppteckning
indicates they had 5 living children (dating back to 1636) at the time of his death.
His widow continued living there until 1672.  The family was not shown as 'fattig.

I speculate, that the building was originally built for farm storage, but then turned
into living quarters for man (and his family), employed by church Pastor.  Is it
possible ?  The internet carries a kyrkladan photo, but that particular building seems
awfully small for 7 people.

It is difficult to determine, from the photo, how large the interior of
the kyrkladan might be.  I thought perhaps someone living in Sweden might have
viewed one of these structures.  My husband's father spent his first 6 years
living in a one-room log cabin - father, mother, and 3 children - so I know
a family can occupy a small space.  Perhaps there were different size kyrkladan ?
I had not previously seen a mantalslängder using kyrkladan to describe a
family's home, so was curious about the description.

You don't say in which part of Sweden you observed the use of kyrkladan.
If searching Ortnamnarkivet three different exists.
Those are all very old but still existing barns (in some case moved from original location).
Most probably those was not used for living. A guess is that a location/torp/farm
has been refered to as Kyrkladan. So if you specify where, it will be more easy to
give a more accurate answer.

Lars Pehrsson and wife are first seen in Össjö's 1660 tax record at Kÿrköladan (10 lines down).
Also seen 1662, 1664, 1665, and 1666 {SVAR films}.  Laurs Poedersson Bouppteckning indicates he
died 1667.  The Boupp. names widow Ingeborre Nielsdaater and their children.  Husband of their
married daughter Karrena Larsdotter [aka Karna] - Per Adtzersson [aka Assersson] - is named as
formyndare.  Karna's age for 1722 death places her birth year as 1636.  The widowed Ingebor remained
at Körkeladan, as seen in 1669, 1670, and 1671 [1671 SVAR Bilded: A0005462_00219].  It appears she
may have remarried but was widowed again, as 1672 Bilded A0005463_00178 shows Anders Skreddare enkä and
son Per Larsson  {Per was also named in 1667 Boupp.}  Although there is a difference in spelling of
names [different clerks' usage !], the 1667 Boupp. gave the Össjö Körckelada location for Lars.

Thank you, Olle, for this copy of Össjö's 1672 mantalslängder.  As can be seen, both Bouppteckning and
Mtl. confirm that the family lived at kyrkladan.  This is also true of Össjö Mtl. from 1660 through 1671,
as per my earlier references.  However, I am still curious why their house or farm was called by that name.
(See my 3 postings above).  Have I translated incorrectly ?  Is a kyrkladan normally a structure for
storing items used by the farmer ?  Or, could a home built of logs also be called a kyrkladan ?

No doubt many early homes were constructed of wood logs, but this was the first time I have seen a person's
location referred to as kyrkladan [i.e., church barn).  Perhaps their property also contained that particular
building, for use by the church.  There may be no answer to the question regarding the name, but I had hoped
someone had seen one of these at a Swedish museum and had further information.

According to the SAOB dictionary, kyrklada could denote a
barn belonging to, or located near, a church; also about a barn that has temporarily been used as a church

Hi Anna-Carin,
I tried to find maps on www.lantmateriet.se and historiska kartor, but couldn't find anything about Kyrkladan.
Are you used to those maps?

Kind regards from,
Olle

Answer discovered this evening, after Olle mentioned maps - another source, Össjö Räkenskaper för Kyrka,
came to mind.  Volume began with 1662, which is also when Lars Pehrsson first appears in the mantalslängd.
Lars is shown paying 2 daler silvermynt for Kyrkoladan huus leja. He is assessed every year, until his
death in 1667.  Ingebor Nilsdotter af Kyrkoladan is assessed in 1667 for 2 daler Bonde skÿlds.  Also
in 1667, she must pay Extraordinari fee of 8 daler silvermynt [probably back fees owed and demanded
in Lars' Bouppteckning].  Ingebor continued paying Jordskyld of 2 daler from 1668 through 1671. Although
the 1672 Mtl. shows a widow and son Pehr Larsson, the 1672 Räkenskaper says öds, so they did leave.
There is no further activity until  1682, and then - Kyrkoladan, som halvan bebos for the sum of 1 daler,
is seen during 1682, 1683, and 1684.  In 1685, the price is raised again to 2 daler. {SVAR Bildid C0063221_00052].
A brief viewing of the records from 1686 thru 1691 did not show a separate listing for Kyrkoladan.  So,
it would appear that Anna-Carin's dictionary definition would agree with these facts.

Thank you again Olle and Anna-Carin, for helping me solve the mystery.

It seems as the searches in Skånsk ortnamnsdatabas (url http://dal2.isof.se/SODA/SokOrtnamn.aspx?db=Lund)
is a bit tricky but I so far found three reg:s for kyrkoladan in Össjö, with different spelling and occurance as shown in photo.
It gives no more explanation to the basic question though ...

Beside that you wrote in previous posting (in line 8) Kyrkoladan, som halvan bebos -
which says ~ The church barn which half of used for living.
So it seems that the building has been partly used for living and fees were payed.
