Carol Larson

I am searching for John August Larson, born 18 June 1862, likely moved to Lysekil shortly after birth or maybe even born there.  He emigrated in 1888, went to Minnesota USA and married Marie Matilda Johnson (supposedly from Trolhatten)

Thank you!  Now I'm looking for his wife(s):
Maria Matilda Johnson, said to be born in Trollhatten 1863-1864; married John August in Minnesota (USA) in 1894, died in Chicago, IL 1899.
Maria  (Sjo)Holm also born in Sweden; married John August in 1899 in Chicago.
That's all I know for sure.

Thank you again.  Good information.

Still looking for John August's wives.  Even though they were born in Sweden, they, too emigrated and married him here in the states.

Thank you for your information.  It has gotten me further than I have come in over a year.

Hello Carol

This is the only Maria Matilda I have found born 1863-64 in Hjärtum not so far from Trollhättan:

Johansdotter, Maria Matilda
Dressmaker (female)
born. 13/8 1864 in Hjärtum, Älvsborgs län (Bohuslän)
Emigrated 6/10 1890
from 15 Rote 24 G, Göteborgs domkyrkoförs, Göteborgs och Bohus län (Västergötland)

Still looking for Maria (Sjo)holm, John August's second wife.  I don't know where in Sweden she was born.  Her birth was probably 1865-68, most likely closer to 1868.  She married John in Chicago in October, 1899. I do not have emigration records, either.  She is the mystery woman in our search.  Thank you for all you have already done.

Did they have any children? Have you searched the census? How do you know John married in both Minnesota and Chicago?

I have the marriage information from searching US records and family stories.  Maria Matilda and John were married 4 June 1894 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnsesota.  They had two children, Arvid and Frances.  She died in June of 1899 in Chicago.  John then married Maria Sjoholm in October, 1894 in Chicago.  Apprently he advertised for a Swedish wife right after Maria Matilda died.  They also had two children, Harold John and Isidore.  Maria died in Mosinee, Wisconsin in 1944.

It could be.  Maria's gravestone reads 1866-1944.  We are certain she died in Mosinee because she lived with my husband's parents (Isidore Larson--her son).  It's a line worth following.  Thank you again.

This should be John and Maria S on findagrave:

They are buried in Mosinee Cemetery. Here it is listed that Maria S is born 1866 and dead 1944.

One suggestion is that Maria [Sjo]Holm is identical with Sara Maria Johansdotter Sjöholm, born June 20, 1866 in Dädesjö parish, county Kronoberg in Småland. She was the daughter of a blacksmith; Johan Pettersson Sjöholm and his wife Johanna Katarina Jonasdotter.

Sara Maria Johansdotter Sjöholm emigrated from Dädesjö in April 18, 1887. [Source: Swedish census 1880 and EmiWeb]

When leaving the port of Gothenburg she is listed as Sara M Sjöholm.

However, her destination is Burlington. Would that refer to Burlington, Ontario, Canada or Burlington in the state of Vermont?

Good question.  All the dates fit.  Maria's middle initial is S as shown on the gravestone.  oo oral history to pursue anymore so we have to depend on the records.  This certainly is promising.

Couldn't it be Burlington Iowa? If you look at the Gothenburg, Sweden, Passenger lists 1869-1951 there are more people going to Burlington. At one of them, a Jonas P Sjöholm it also says Burlington and then Iowa? It is written something after Burlington for Sara M as well, but it is a bit fuzzy. What do you think?

Sara Maria had a brother Jonas Peter Sjöholm (born 2/2 1864) according to Dädesjö AI:15 (1861-1866) page 21.

According to Dädesjö AI:20 (1886-1890) page 293 he emigrated May 9th 1887. This fits with the passenger record in previous note.

Another sister Emma Katarina (born March 16th 1858) emigrates April 27th 1892 according to Dädesjö AI:21 (1891-1899) page 31.

Her destination is Quebec, Canada according to Emigranten:
Name:   Emma K Sjöholm
Birth Year:   abt 1858
Gender:   Kvinna (Female)
Place of Origin:   Dädesjö Kronoberg Län, Sverige
Destination:   Quebec

Port of Departure:   Göteborg
Database Name:   EmiHamn
Archive Call Number:   48:67:431
Principal Person:   Sjöholm Emma K

It could also be worth getting bouppteckningar after the parents. Johan Pettersson Sjöholm died September 27th 1912 and Johanna Katarina Jonasdotter died March 16th 1905. Both according to Dädesjö AIIa:1 (1900-1913) page 350.

I have found an Emma Katherine Larson (Sjoholm) in Chicago. The mother's  name and her birth date is not a match, but I am thinking that perhaps it could be her anyway?

From Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947:
Name:   Emma Katherine Larson
[Emma Katherine Sjoholm]
Birth Date:   15 Mar 1860
Birth Place:   Sweden
Death Date:   1 Jul 1932
Death Place:   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Burial Date:   4 Jul 1932
Burial Place:   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Cemetery Name:   Rosehill
Death Age:   72
Occupation:   Housewife
Race:   White
Marital Status:   W
Gender:   Female
Residence:   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Father Name:   John Sjoholm
Father Birth Place:   Sweden
Mother Name:   Hannah J. Logren
Mother Birth Place:   Sweden
Spouse Name:   Frank A. Larson
FHL Film Number:   1893254

Her immigration year is 1892 according to the 1900 census:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MSQJ-T9F?cc=1325221

I think this could be their marriage record from Cook County, Illinois, Marriage Index, 1871-1920:
Name:   Emma Holm
Age:   34
Gender:   Female
Birth Year:   abt 1861
Marriage Type:   Marriage
Marriage Date:   2 Mar 1895
Marriage Place:   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Spouse Name:   Frank A. Larson
Spouse Age:   30
Spouse Gender:   Male
FHL Film Number:   1030249

Maybe it is not her, but there is some notes about her birth in Dädesjö AI:15 (1861-1866) page 21. I cannot really make out what the notes are about.

Interesting but Emma doesn't seem to fit.  The other siblings, however, are new aunts and uncles that we didn't know about, if indeed this is our Maria.  Thanks for digging!
