However, this Blenda is listed in the 1905 NY census as being 30 years old. With newborn son Sidney. Gomer is 27.
This Gomer travels 3 times to Sweden between 1901 and 1906, in 1906 he states that he has lived in NY and is now going to his home in Dorchester, MA. In 1924 and 1927 Blenda is listed in the Wellesley directory as widow of Gomer Swan, their son, Sidney is also living there.

1930 census, Wellesley, MA:

Sidney W Swan   25
Ruth M Swan   22

The son Sidney born in 1928 dies 23 january 2011 in Mattapan, Suffolk, MA.

Gomer Swan (Svahn) moved back to Sweden, he dies in Stockholm 12 Nov 1924, he is then living with his father Oscar. Gomer was born in Uddevalla 7 Oct 1877. A note says that he is married in America to Blenda Johnson on 30 Nov 1901, wife living in America. The death certificate says that he died from insanity, immediate cause paralysis cordis (acute heart failure).
His parents are exactly as stated on the marriage certificate. He is buried in Danderyd:

This explains why Blenda is living alone in NY 1920, with son Sidney

With reference to Frans Gustaf Forsberg (later Frank Fosberg): Sometimes one should not completely dismiss what the family and relatives do remember. Charles Fosberg really existed and he was the brother of Frank Fosberg.

Karl Peter Forsberg was born on the 12th of October 1863 in the parish of Gunnarskog in Värmland. He was the son of the above mentioned Nils Forsberg and Cajsa (Kajsa) Andersdotter. Karl Peter emigrated to Boston, MA in 1883. He settled down i Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts were he married Carolina Anna Zetterquist (20 Sep 1890). From now on, Karl Peter is to be called Charles or Charles Peter Fosberg in censuses and in the marriage/birth/death records.

In the marriage certificate, it states that Karl Peter (or Charles) was the son of Nils Forsberg and Cajsa. His wife to be, Carolina Anna (also named Lena and Lina), was the daughter of Johan Zetterquist and Helena Maria.

Charles Fosberg and wife Carolina Anna had the following children (all born in Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts):

Henry Theodore, born 28 Jan 1891
John Albert, born 24 Sep 1894
Edward William, born 22 Sep 1896
Carl, born 16 Dec 1898

The family in census 1900:

Name: Charles Fosberg
Residence: Quincy city, Norfolk, Massachusetts
Birth Date: Oct 1863
Birthplace: Sweden
Relationship to Head-of-Household: Self
Spouse Name: Lena Fosberg
Spouse Birth Place: Sweden
Father Birthplace:    Sweden
Mother Birthplace:    Sweden
Race or Color (expanded): White
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Years Married: 9
Estimated Marriage Year: 1891
Immigration Year: 1882

Household
Charles Fosberg
Spouse Lena Fosberg
Child Henry J Fosberg
Child John A Fosberg
Child Edward Fosberg
Child Carl Fosberg

Wife Carolina Anna, born Zetterquist, died on Christmas Eve, December 24th, 1902 in Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts, why wou will find Charles Fosberg as a widower in census 1910, still living i Quincy with his four sons. He is now, using his Swedish birth name Carl:

Carl Fosberg, 42y
Child Henry Fosberg, 19y
Child Albin (or Albert) Fosberg, 17y
Child Edward Fosberg, 14y
Child Carl Fosberg, 11y

And in addition to that; Have a look att this marriage in Quincy, Norfolk, MA;

Groom's Name: Frederick Forsburg
Groom's Birth Date: 1860
Groom's Age: 25
Bride's Name: Soffia Person (should be Sofia)
Bride's Birth Date: 1861
Bride's Age: 24
Marriage Date: 21 Mar 1885
Marriage Place: Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts
Groom's Father's Name: Nils
Groom's Mother's Name: Cagsa
Bride's Father's Name: Per
Bride's Mother's Name: Mary

He is the son of a Nils Forsberg and wife Cajsa!! I would assume this is a brother of Frank and Charles (Frans Gustaf & Karl Peter) and presumably this is Frederick Forsberg (Swedish census 1880):

Forsberg, Anders Fredrik
Dräng (farmhand)
b. 1860 in Gunnarskog (Värmlands län, Värmland)
Man, single

Fredros
Gunnarskog (Värmlands län, Värmland)

Thanks!

I do believe that Frans Gustaf (Frank), Karl Peter (Charles) and Anders Fredrik (Frederick), were brothers, all born to Nils Forsberg and Cajsa Andersdotter. However, I also believe that it is of utmost importance to consult the birth records and the Household examination rolls of the Gunnarskog parish for the final proof that they actually were brothers.

They are brothers, I have consulted the books. Their father dies 6 jan 1868 and they get poor relief from the parish. They have a sister Carolina Sofia born 4 Sept 1852 who is almost blind

So, now we now for sure that the three Forsberg brothers (later Fosberg), from the parish Gunnarskog in Värmland, all went to the U.S and Massachusetts but what about their mother Kajsa Andersdotter Forsberg?

She is listed in the Swedish census 1880 as a widow, living with her youngest son Karl Peter Forsberg:

Andersdotter Forsberg, Kajsa
b. 1829 in Sillerud (Värmlands län, Värmland)

Widow, mother

Sälboda Bruk
Gunnarskog (Värmlands län, Värmland)

Place of birth (in the database): Sillerud Värmlands län

I can't seem to find her in the Swedish census 1890, however I did find this in the Massachusetts death records;

Fosberg   Kaisa (Anderson)
Boston   1904

I can't thank you all enough! I have been calling my grandfather, Charles Chuck Fosberg, will all of this information. He says it is unbelievable!. He loved hearing about his great-great grandfather, Nils the blacksmith. My father, Glen, wants to know if you can trace our lineage back any further...he wants to hear that a Forsberg was a Viking
I just did a bunch of research on that area of Sweden to get a better feel for what thier lives must have been like. I also now understand how Swedish last names use to be son of/daughter of... and then that changed around the 1800's, I think. This seems like it would make things very hard to trace without extra details! I also read that Forsberg means rapids-mountain. My entire family thanks you guys. I am getting phone calls from my brother and cousins wanting to hear what else I have been told about our family! This is all very exciting!  Courtney

Yes, it is possible to follow the family back further, usually to sometime in the 1700s, sometimes longer. Nils took the name Forsberg when he became a smith, he was originally called Olsson, ie a son of Olof. The name Forsberg is not unique, there are several families who are not related. Before 1901 you could take any surname you wanted (except noble family names) and just report to the priest that you decided to use another name.

It is always rewarding to be able to help!

The brother Karl Peter Forsberg (or Charles Fosberg) and wife Carolina Anna Zetterquist also had a daughter Alice, born in Quincy on April 19th, 1901. She is not with her father and brothers in the census 1910. Either, she died in infancy or - since the mother Carolina passed away in December 1902 - she was placed in a foster home.

Probably a coincidene. In the census 1930, you will find a married woman with the name Alice Fosberg, born around 1900-1902 and living in North Dakota (were the above SSN was issued);

Census - US Federal 1930

Anders Fredrik Forsberg (in the U.S Frederick Andrew Fosberg) died indeed in 1914 (as suggested by Chris yesterday). It gets slightly confusing since both him and his brother Karl Peter (Charles) each had a son with the names Henry Harry Theodore. Charles' son Henry Theodore was born in 1891. Fredericks son Henry Theodore was born in 1901.

Fredricks son Henry T died at a young age in 1911 (just 10 years old). He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Winchendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts. As you wil see, his mother Sofia Person is called Sophia Pierce. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=fosberg&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel =in&GSst=21&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=48166504&df=all&

Fredrick Fosberg also had his final rest in the Riverside Cemetary; The son of Nelson Nils Fosburg and Catherine Cajsa Anderson (Andersdotter).

So, what can be found about Fredericks and Sophias children? In the census 1910, it is said that their namnes and ages at that time were as follow;

Colden J Forberg 14
Arthur E Forberg 20
Laura F Forberg 16
Paul A Forberg 13
Carl R Forberg 11
Harry T Forberg 9
Robert F Forberg 5

This is data from the birth certificates for some of the children (all born in Winchendon, Massachusetts to Frederick A Fosberg and his wife Sophia Person/Pierce);

Paul A was born in 1896, on May 20th. His complete name was Paul Adolphus.
Carl R, who's birth name was Carl Richard, was born on May 1st, 1898
Harry T (or Henry Theodor) we now about (born 1901, died 1911)
Robert F, was named Francis Robert, born 22 Jan 1905

I still have not managed to find the births for the three oldest children (Colden J, Arthur E & Laura F)

Arthur Egnar Fosberg is listed in the WWI Draft, he obviously participates in the war because in 1942 he is living in a veteran´s home (wounded?)in New Haven, Connecticut, his wife S Fosberg lives in Danbury, Conn.

I was reading all this to my grandparents last night and the name Sidney Swan came up. My grandmother, Norma (MacNeil) Fosberg said she went to school with Sidney in Wellesely many years ago and was sad to hear of his recent passing. She hadn't heard that name in years! Edwin's youngest son, Paul Fosberg, and his wife Marsha have been trying to find out all this information for years and you guys have solved the mysteries in just days! Edith will remain the Fosberg mystery. I have been asked to create a family tree and tales of everyone's lives. I will pass it out to everyone in the family ASAP. Hopefully, my 8-month-old, Wesley, takes some long naps so I can get all this done! Thank you! Thank you!

The sister, Carolina Sofia,  who was almost blind has to go into service as a maid. She moves to Arvika town, block No 67, where she becomes pregnant, the son Frans Theodor is born in Gunnarskog 6 Dec 1878. She is later registered in Arvika as loose maiden ie has no job, which was illegal at that time. There is a note that as she had the baby in Gunnarskog, she should be consideraed as living there, but in the 1880 census she is not listed, neither is her son.

In the next household census book she is still in Arvika, but her son dies in 1880, buried in Gunnarskog. Evidently, Carolina also dies but the date is difficult to read. Frans Theodor is listed in the book of dead in Arvika as having died in Gunnarskog on 18 April 1880. Cause unknown. Carolina Sofia Forsberg dies 16 Oct 1880 (in Gunnarskog) from pulmonary tuberculosis and is buried in Gunnarskog.

In the death notice in Gunnarskog, Frans Theodor has the patronymic Nilsson (unusual to give a surname to a child).
Looking in the birth book for Gunnarskog, the father is said to be railway worker Nilsson? In those days parents had the right to be anonymous in the books, so that is unusual.

I think that we should work on Bengt´s suggestion that the women from Stenbrohult may be the right Blenda and Christina. If we are lucky, there is an estate inventory for parents or unmarried siblings where their married names can be found.
