My third (and last?) emigrant question:

My grandmother's cousin was Axel Hamnquist.
Was called Axel Hanquist (exactly, the m has disappeared) in the US.
- Born 03 Oct 1869 in Fröskog.
- Emigreated 28 Aug 1891 (from Göteborg).
- Is in 1897 (when my grandmother emigrates) stated as living at 8428 Green Bay Avenue in Chicago.
- Is found in US Census 1900 at 8428 Green Bay Avenue in Chicago with wife Ellen Sophia (b. 1886) and daughter Ruth (b. 1898).
- Is in 1904 (when my grandmother's brother emigrates) stated as living at 7955 Bond Avenue in Chicago.
- Is found in US Census 1910 at 7955 Bond Avenue in Chicago with wife Ellen Sophia (b. 1886), daughter Ruth (b. 1898) and son Raymond (b. 1902).
- Is found in US Census 1920 in Chicago with wife, daughter and son.

Questions:
* Can anyone tell me what the street address is in Census 1920?? (enumeration district no 481, ward no 8)
* Can anyone find Axel and family in US Census 1930? According to an unconfirmed statement (and a photo) the family may have moved to Arizona.
* Daughter Ruth is to have married a man called Charles (unknown last name) and sometime around 1921-1924 have had a daughter by the name of Margir. Anyone who can find this family in the 1930 Census??
* I have tried to search for the family in the SSDI, but can't find them at all under Hanquist (nor under Hamnquist) - Axel and wife Ellen Sophia may have been to old to be registered there, but I think that Raymond and/or his wife ought to be there. Anyone has any clues??

Very, very grateful for any information. American genealogy really isn't my strong suit!

Hi Ingela,

I checked some Chicago City Directories for you.

Annual Directory of the City of Chicago 1917:

page 729, column 2

Hamquist, Ruth Miss sten (stenographer) 1825 (perhaps an office number), 3275 LaSalle (where she worked), h. (where she lived) 2708 E. 76th

(I don't see Axel.)

Polk's Chicago City Directory 1923

page 1496, column 4

Hamquist, Axel formn (foreman), h. 2708 E. 76th

Polk's Chicago (Illinois) City Directory, Volume 1928-1929

page 163, column 1

Hamquist Anne hair drsr (hair dresser; styled hair and probably cut it, etc.), r. (residence) 816 Sheridan Rd. (Road) {I don't know if she belongs to this family but the name is rare in these directories.)

Hamquist Axel h. 2708 E. 76th

Hamquist Ray surveyor h. 7344 South Shore Drive (probably right near Lake Michigan)

Note that the directories spelled the name Hamquist, not Hanquist.

Mats & Judy,

Thank you very, very much! This is fantastic!!!
I'm in (sporadic) contact with some of my American relatives, but they have only this vague idea that this family moved to Arizona, and they have no names - in fact I could already before this great information tell them more than they knew!

It seems strange that daughter Ruth is single in 1930, because I have a photo of her daughter and her son-in-law. But I may have been out on the date: the son-in-law may well have been upwards of ten years older than his wife of course. A pity they didn't write down the surnames on the back of the photos they sent back to their Swedish family!

Judy, no, I do not at present have a subscription to any site showing censuses. I would be most grateful for a link, or a screen print!!

But this is absolutely great!
Mats and Judy - what amazing detectives you both are! (But then, I already knew that!) Thank you both so much!

Hi Ingela,

I've sent you links to the Ancestry.com images for the censuses in 1930-1920-1910-1900. (I suppose you had everything except 1930 but it was easy enough to send the others, just in case.)

Hi Ingela,

About this part of your original message:

and sometime around 1921-1924 have had a daughter by the name of Margir.

Perhaps Margir is the Marjorie born about 1923 to Ray Hamquist and his wife. It is perhaps possible that she was really the daughter of an unmarried Ruth and was taken as a daughter by her brother and his wife, or else your informant was confused about whose daughter she was.

It is going to be hard to help further without more clues from your American relatives about who these people married, etc., but in a few years (2012) the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be released and that will provide a few more clues and perhaps enough clues to solve the mystery.

Again thank you both, Judy and Mats!!
Both for the material published here and for the emails with links and documents!

Judy, no, I don't think the informant confused the daughters. It's a photo sent by Axel (or possibly wife Ellen) which is clearly marked Ruth's pretty daughter Margir with Charles, the man she recently married (and of course, no dates and the covering letter lost); another photo made me think that Charles was born in the beginning of the 1920's and I thought Margir and Charles were of an age. But it's so difficult to tell from photos from more than 50 years back: women always look older than their years since that was the fashion.

Mats, that is amazing, the info about Axel's wife! It rounds off that part of the family so nicely! I've tried locating her in a vague and disorganized way, thinking I'd better try to concentrate on Alf and Axel himself.

I must say, I feel I'm running out of words to express my gratitude - but you must know it's heartfelt!

Ingela
