I am helping an elderly friend discover her past. She gave me information, and I think that most of the parishes were located in Östergotland. What I need to know (so I can search in the U.S. census) is which of the children came to the U.S., and about when did they come.  This is the family:
FATHER:  JOHAN FREDRICK SANDBERG
born:  9 May 1887 in Gatstugan, Tystberga parish, Sodermanland, Sweden
died:  23 Dec 1896 in Tullkammaren, Gryt parish, Östergotland (worked at the custom house)
MOTHER:  CAROLINA VILHELMINA PEHRSDOTTER (or Petersson)
born:  26 May 1843 in Svartuna, Svarta parish, Norshammer, Sweden
died:  7 April 1892 in Tullkammaren, Gryt parish, Östergotland
THEIR CHILDREN:
     1)  AMANDA CAROLINA JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG  (I know much about her, but not about her siblings)
born:  11 Mar 1867 - Nykoping, Nokolai parish (Östergotland ?)
moved to Stockholm in 1889, moved to England, and went to the U.S. in 1910
died: 14 Oct 1922 in Spokane, WA  (married Carl Gustav Ryden)
     2)  AXEL FREDRICK JOHANSSON SANDBERG
born:  15 Oct 1870 in Nykoping, Nikkolai parish (Östergotland ?)
He emigrated, maybe around 1896 ??  He was a ship captain near San Francisco, but I canno
find him in the U.S. censuses.
     3)  ELIN JOSEFINA JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG  born: 5 Sept 1872 in Svartuna, Svarta parish
Her daughter, Elvira VERA Maria, emigrated around 1910.  I think Vera Sandberg was born
out-of-wedlock around 1894, and was sent to the U.S. when she came of age.  She settled in
Spokane, near her mother's sister, Amanda Sandberg Ryden.
     4)  MARIA VILHELMINA   born: 22 June 1874 in Svarta parish.  She moved to Norkoping in 1891.
Nothing more is known about her.
     5)  SELMA ELISABETH JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG   born: 14 Oct 1876 in Gryt parish.
In 1896 she was living in Gryt parish and later moved to Norkoping.
     6)  ALMA VIKTORIA JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG  (1877 - 1878, died in Gryt parish)
     7)  ERIKA VIKTORIA JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG  born: 13 Feb 1879 in Gryt parish
Lived Baresund, Gryt parish in 1896
     8)  ALMA FREDRIKA JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG  born: 22 Feb 1883 in Gryt parish
Lived in Baresund, Gryt parish in 1896
     9)  ANNA EMILIA JOHANSDOTTER SANDBERG  born:  11 Oct 1887 in Gryt parish
Lived in Gryt parish in 1896, and sent a letter to the U.S. from Stockholm in 1911

My friend (born in the 1920's) is trying to find out what cousins she met when she was a child, but without knowing who in the family emigrated (except the oldest two), I have no idea of how to search.  If they married in Sweden and then emigrated, they would be in the U.S. census under their married names.

Any help would be appreciated.  If you cannot give me help with the people, then I would like to know where these parishes were located - were they in Östergotland?  Thanks in advance.

Elin Josefina marries Karl Gustaf Boberg and moves north, he is a farm worker: This is the census 1900:
Boberg, Karl Gustaf   1859   Father

(Barn), Daphny Karolina   1899   Child
(Barn), Elvira Maria   1900   Child
 living in Mörsil, Jämtland County
Note that Elvira Maria was born in 1900 in the marriage (19 Oct according to the birth lists). The daughter Mara Maria was born in 1894. A Vera M Boberg emigrates 24 Aug 1910 from Trondheim, Norway. With her goes Daffny K Boberg born 1899. They are going to Oregon and the ticket was paid in America. The emigration database gives the name Vera Maria, emigrating from Haverö parish, which corresponds to the Norwegian data. Apparently they both lived there in 1910, but no church records are on-line yet.

According to the Emibas register, Karl Gustaf Boberg also emigrates but no year is given. He died in 1947 and is buried in Mörsil (but not with his wife according to the register)
In the Norwegian ships lists Carl Gustaf Boberg is listed as leaving May 10, 1894 for Eden, Minnesota.

This web page shows a picture of Daffni, Elvira and Ingrid Boberg (little girls to the left) and their father Karl Boberg next to them, standing, about 1910. http://bildarkivet.jamtli.com/bild.aspx?page=1&vemnamn=Nilsson+H%C3%A5kan&rader= 4&Kolumner=6&numinset=6&FotoId=27901

Doffery (Daffni, Doffni) Boberg and Vera Boberg arrived in Quebec Sept 10, 1910. They were detained according to the passenger list. But they passed the border the same day, passage paid by their uncle, Axel Johnson in Portland, Oregon

Anna Emilia lives in Stockholm unmarried in 1918, she is a housemaid. She then moves to an, as yet, unregistered part of the city (source: rotemansarkivet, www.ssa.stockholm,se)
Alma has a son in 1900:
Sandberg, Alma Fredrika   1883   Mother
(Barn), Axel Harry   1900   Child
Living in Norrköping, probably with sister Selma. The son dies in 1956 in the island of Öland.
Erika is a maid at Tornstaholm, Drothem, Östergötland in 1900.

I can´t find them in the register of deaths after 1947, so either they died earlier or emigrated.

I finally found a scratchy copy of the parish book for Mörsil after 1900. Mara/Vera Maria was born 29 Sept 1894 in Östersund and Doffny (spellings vary) 28 Feb 1899 in Sundsvall. Karl Gustaf Boberg came back from America 15 Jan 1899 and married Elin Sandberg 18 Aug 1900. He was not the father of the 2 eldest girls. Vera is in care somewhere else in the early 1900s. Elin takes out a moving cerificate for Doffny in 1910 - obviously her husband and the children did not get along.

Two pictures of Elin Sandberg/Boberg, one also has Elvira Maria Boberg/Jupén and her son (?) in 1950:

Alma Fredrika Sandberg dies in Norrköping St Olai parish 17 June 1911 (Församlingsbok aIIa:22 p 4458), for some reason I can´t find her in the death book. She had moved to Stockholm Jan 4, 1911 but came back.

Selma Elisabet marries shoemaker Gustaf Robert Törnqvist from Motala 31 Dec 1907. They move to Örebro March 4, 1908 from Norrköping (församlingsbok AIIaa:5 page 1664). Selma had a daughter Oct 7, 1905 in Norrköping S.t Olai parish. Her name was Maria Elisabet and she married Elis Gunnar Fredriksson 1936. Maria died in Norrköping 1995.

I have entered the above information into my notes, and now I know so much more about this family!  My friend, who is too old to use the Internet for research, is grateful.  This came at a good time for her because her husband is very ill, and learning about her Swedish ancestors makes her happy.
In addition, the family now knows about Vera and Daffney (or Daphney) Broberg (or Sandberg).  Vera sailed under the name of Broberg, but used Sandberg as her name in the states.  I have not found Daphney in the census yet.  I will continue to search.
Those photos were interesting.  I did not know that there was an Internet site that posted Swedish photos.  My son, who has taken 4 years of Swedish in prepartion for our trip this summer, will help me translate and search.
One more question:  what site can I find photos of the parishes that the Sandbergs and Brobergs were living in?  Also, is there a picture on the Internet of the Tullkammaren lighthouse, where Johan Fredrick Sandberg died (Gryt parish, Östergotland)?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You can rent holiday accomodation in Barösund customs house from the customs authority. It is rented at a very low price and probably fantastick. On the island of Kättilö.

4. Barösund
Barösund is situated on the island of Kättilö in the archipelago of Gryt, about 80 km south-east of Norrköping. Here you should go if you want to meet with a real archipelago holiday. The waters are rich of fish and you can go by boat to Häradskär or Harstena, two beautiful islands in the outer archipelago. You live in the old customs houses, the oldest from 1780, still with modern standard. You can park your car at Fyrudden and go to Barösund by boat, which you have to order in connection with the booking.

Facts:

The main building has five two-bed rooms, common kitchen, shower, toilet and sauna. The little house has one apartment with two rooms and kitchen for four persons and one little apartment with one room and kitchen for two persons. Common shower and toilet. You can borrow rowing-boats with outboard motor and the fishing is free.

Google on Kättilö and you will find pictures of the island.

Thanks for this idea!  When we took a boat trip in the Stockholm archipelago, we wondered how we could rent a cottage on an island.  You have given us a good website.
