Aron Högman was born Aron Jonasson in Dalskog Parish on May 2, 1838.  Our family's oral hisory indicates that he departed for the United States in 1868 accompanied by a friend Gust Peterson.  Aron Högman spent the first year and several months in the state of Illinois; so I wonder if his original destination might have been Chicago.

Is there information available relative to the exact date of departure and the name of the ship?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Lee Himan

Mats Ahlgren: Thank you!

What you found fills in some empty places in my effort to retrace Aron Högman's different stages of life.  He arrived in the U.S. in 1868, married in Illinois in 1869, and homesteaded here in Iowa from 1870 to 1902, when he returned to Sweden. He married Anna Karlsson in 1904. As a married couple, they returned to the U.S. and lived in Pomeroy, Iowa several years until Anna became disenchanted with life here. They then returned to Sweden somewhere between 1907 and 1911.

I noticed a reference to Ransberg.  I have an old letter from Sweden that Aron wrote to his son my grandfather in 1905 which was postmarked Fagerssana.  Is that town in Ransberg Parish?

Family oral history maintains that Aron made 2 or maybe 3 round trips from Sweden to America in his life time.

The only other possibility is that he might have originally left Scandinavia from somewhere in Norway.  Some in the family believe that he worked in Norway in public works some time before immigrating to the U.S. with his friend Gust Peterson in 1868. I am beginning to think he may have left from Norway. This is where I am stuck.  Would his work out of country have affected the record keeping in Dalskog Parish?

Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

Sincerely
Lee Himan

I have tried to follow Aron from his birth, through numerous different places in Dalskog. He starts work at the age of 6, when he is separated from his mother. Moves to Billingsfors in 1847, he is said to be at Billingsfors bruk (the Iron Works) which is a big place. I found him reunited with his mother who has married Karl Högman and had sons Jonas Alfred and Carl Magnus (Billingsfors AI:9, p 63). They later have son August and daughter Stina. Aron apparently moves to Tisselskog in 1852 and retrns in 1854. There is a note: Infirm, some problem with left knee. Aron moves to Sten in 1857, returning in 1858 (AI:11 p 72). Aron has work papers to work in another parish in 1860, he has then been in Skedsmo according to certificate of holy communion. In the next book he is away for a while, then returns and finally moves to Undenäs in Skaraborg Nov 8, 1864 with his step brother Jonas Alfred b 1846 in Tisselskog. Parents move to Grannvikens Iron Works in Skaraborg county, which turns out to be in Undenäs  parish. The two boys again join the family at Undenäs AI:14 page 120. Aron moves to undetermined place 30 Aug 1865 (maybe Norway or America?), his half-brother Jonas Alfred to North America 21 April 1870.

Aron ran away, without a proper permit, I have not found him again

Cause of death was ventricular cancer

Unfortunately, the books after 1900 have not been scanned yet, so I cannot see when they arrived back in Sweden

To Chris and Mats:

Thank you for all the help.  I'm most appreciative!

You have shown that he had difficult times early in life, but he was very successful in homesteading on the prairies of Iowa from 1870 to 1902.  I can't even imagine my children and now grandchildren going to work by age six.

Sincerely,

Lee Himan

Hi Lee
I and a friend of mine have taken pictures of the church books in Hjo parish after 1900
Aron Högman returned from North America 7/7 1911 together with his second wife Anna Kristina Karlsson to Hjo parish and he lived there until his death  2/5 1922.
In a note in the church book states the following: Lived in America from 20/7 1906 to 7/7 1911.
Sincerely
Roland Froh

Thank you Roland:

Your information confirms some of the family's oral history.  I remember my late aunt saying she never knew Aaron, her grandfather, but her father had told her that he returned to Sweden after her birth - April of 1911.  An accurate bit of information!

Sincerely,
Lee Himan

Is is interesting to see that Aaron and Anna are both marked as US Citizens when they arrive to New York on United States (arrival Aug 20). Aaron (that is the way they spell his name) is a citizen since May 28, 1877.

Aron, called Himan, returned to USA, after visiting Sweden, in April 17, 1903. He arrived to New York on board Germanic.

At the same time travelled Johan Aug Johansson , age 21, from Fröjered. He gave John Himan, same adress as Aron, as destination.

Lars Johan Eriksson from Fagersanna with wife and 4 children was also on the sqme journey, but they where heading for Lars Johan's brother Gust Burnett, Wisconsin

Maybe John Himan is the half-brother Jonas Alfred?

Thank you to Karl, Mats, and Chris.

The number of trips back and forth across the Atlantic continue to build up. I am so pleased to have this information.

After homesteading from 1870 to 1902, he still had a lot of energy!! Walking and guiding a plow, pulled by horses, through many many acres of prairie sod was not easy work.  He and his first wife lived in a 10' x 14' sod house for 7 years during which time three of their four children were born.  The closest town was 10 miles away. A tough life!  In 1902, he sold 225 acres of Iowa farm ground, which he owned free and clear, to finance his retirement - a determined and resourceful Swede.

Sincerely,
Lee Himan

Lee,

Since they both died in Sweden there will be Estate Inventories at the Hjo Municipal Court. These list all legal heirs, any will made and also give a complete list og everything (and I mean everything) they owned at the time of death. The Göteborg Archive will be able to copy them, if you give the dates of death, dates of birth and the place (Hjo).
