Hello! Looking for Beda Kristina Johannesdotter born 1880 28/5 somewhere in Småland. I´ve heard that she emigrated to the states but have no idea when or where. Would be so grateful for any information about this. Birgitta

The Ellis Island site shows the manifest of a person who seems to be your Beda. She was traveling to meet a friend named A. Wahlgren. A. Wahlgren lived at 74 Mohawk Street in Chicago, Illinois.

Thanks Judy. Now I know that she really went to the states. I wonder if she is to be found in the census of Chicago or if that isn´t her final destination?

Yesterday I tried to find her in censuses but I wasn't very successful. For a while I thought she was a widow found in the 1930 U.S. Federal Census but when I checked her birth date in the Social Security Death Index, she was born in a different month and year.

Correction:

...but when I checked her birth date in the Social Security Death Index, she was born in a different month and year.

I should have typed:

She was born on a different day and month. The year matched.

Hello Judy. I´m very grateful that you tried to help me. I would very much like to have the facts that you found anyway, sometimes the priests are incorrect in their writing.

Hi Birgitta,

This is the person I found but I don't think she is yours because of the birthdate difference. I also can't find her in any of the previous censuses.

1930 U.S. Federal Census

Household Members: Name Age

Beda Harling 50
Bernice Harling 20
Leroy Harling 12

Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois; Roll  442; Page: 9B; Enumeration District: 612; Image: 519.0.

Name: Beda Harling
Home in 1930: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Age: 50
Estimated birth year: abt 1880
Birthplace: Sweden
Relation to Head of House: Head
Race: White

Name: Bernice Harling
Home in 1930: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1910
Relation to Head of House: Daughter
Parent's Name: Beda
Race: White

Name: Leroy Harling
Home in 1930: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Age: 12
Estimated birth year: abt 1918
Relation to Head of House: Son
Parent's Name: Beda
Race: White

The actual census form is more detailed. It says Beda was a widow. The children were born in Illinois but both parents were born in Sweden. The mother was a naturalized citizen and immigrated 1904. (Women seldom tried to get naturalized on their own, so probably she automatically became a citizen when her husband did.) They lived at 6039 West 61st Street in Chicago.

I looked on the Social Security Death Index, which showed the birthdate of this Beda. This is why I think this is the wrong Beda.

Name Birth Death Last Residence Last Benefit SSN Issued

BEDA HARLING  19 Mar 1880 May 1964 (Illinois) (none specified) 339-22-8517 Illinois

She would have filled out her own Social Security Application. It can be ordered for $27 and takes a few weeks to obtain. Questions on the application include her name at birth, where she was born (which hopefully would be better than just saying Sweden), and the names of both parents. That is supposed to include her mother's maiden name.

This is the letter to send. You need to fill in some information and also, I'm sure you would have to pay in U.S. funds.

Please send me a photocopy of the actual application for a Social Security card (Form SS-5--Social Security Number Record Third Party Request for Photocopy) filed by the person listed below.

I obtained this information from the Social Security Death Master file at RootsWeb.com, Inc. who obtained it from the Social Security Death Master file, originally compiled by the Social Security Administration.

My understanding is that the fee is $27, when the Social Security number is provided or $29 if the Social Security number is unknown or incorrect. Enclosed is a check or money order for $___________, made payable to the Social Security Administration.

Thank you for your assistance.

I did find a Harling male with a wife named Beda and the two children found in 1930. This Beda was a bit older than the other one, but ages are often incorrect in censuses.

Ages should have been subtracted from 1919 unless the person was born in January, since the 1920 census was taken in January 1920.

I will attempt to send you the two pages of this record. (Most of the family is at the bottom of one page and the baby LeRoy is at the top of the next page.) (Again, I am using a share feature from Ancestry.com.)

The transcriber had a LOT of trouble reading these names in the 1910 U.S. Federal Census but I think this is the same family.

The census is very, very light. I'll send it to you (through Ancestry.com's link) but you should try to improve the image using a photo-editing program. I think that the baby girl named Boley is not named. I think the record just says Baby.

This appears to be the death record for Frank Harling. This is from the Illinois Death Index.

Last Name First Name Middle Name Sex/Race Age Cert # DeathDate County City Date Filed

HARLING       FRANK      L             M/W  UNK  6009629 1926-03-24 COOK        CHICAGO

If you wish to obtain his death certificate which should have some more information, the least expensive way I know about is to use the services of Molly Kennedy. You will have to pay her $4 in U.S. funds. Maybe she will email the record to you so that you will not have to pay extra postage because (I think) you are in Sweden.

Her email address is:

mollx@hotmail.com

(Note that this says Mollx, not Molly.)

This is her website.

http://www.mollx.com/

She tells you how to order the records from her. She lives near the Illinois State Archives and can help only with records found there.

http://www.mollx.com/DeathCertificates.htm

I've used her services a few times. She helps very quickly.

Molly Kennedy's price is $5, not $4. She still charges less than any source of this record.

I am not convinced that Beda Harling is your Beda, but here is more about her husband.

He was listed on the World War I Draft Registrations on Ancestry.com. I will try to send you the image.

The transcriber had trouble with his second given name. I think it is Lars, but it is not clear. See what you think when you see the record. (I am quite sure it is not Luis.)

Name: Frank Luis Harling
City: Chicago
County: Cook
State: Illinois
Birth Date: 21 Jun 1881
Race: White
FHL Roll Number: 1503859
DraftBoard: 72

Source Citation: Registration Location: Cook County, Illinois; Roll  1503859; Draft Board: 72.

He lived at 6039 Elisabeth. (I lived during part of my childhood at 8745 Elisabeth on the south side of Chicago.) He apparently arrived in the U.S. with a father, since his naturalization status as a citizen is from his father, according to the form. (Citizen by father's naturalization before registrant's majority means that his father became a citizen before Frank was of age (that is, 21 years old, or whatever the age was back then to become of age.)

He was an elevator operator. His nearest relative was Beda Harling. He had blue eyes and light hair. The registration date was 12 September 1918.

I see a man with the right birthdate on the Emibas CD and I think he is Frank. His second given name was Linus and I checked the World War I Draft Registration again. It looks as if it might be Lins, which could be an accidental misspelling of Linus.
