Hello.  I am new to this website and still learning how to navigate the system.

My main purpose is to trace my grandfather back to his origins in Sweden.  My grandfather, John Axel Johnson was born in Sweden 24 February 1866 and emigrated to the USA when he was 17 which would have been 1883.  His brothers Charley and Walfred emigrated about the same time.  They lived for several years in Pontiac, Livingston County, Illinois.  In the early 1890s my grandfather moved to Hancock County, Iowa, where he bought a farm.  He died there in 1913.  Unfortunately, the church he and his family attended in Iowa burned to the ground around 1937 and all family records were destroyed.

John Axel's father has been identified as John Peter Johnson.  His mother was Emily Erickson (Johnson?).  John Peter and Emily also had a daughter whose name I do not know.  She apparently lived the rest of her life in Sweden.  I have a photo of her and her husband taken at Norstedt's studio in Vestervik, Sweden, year unknown.

I do have photos of my grandfather, his parents and his sister, posing in front of their farmhouse.  I also have photos of my grand uncles Charley and Walfred if that would be of help in tracing the family's origins.

Would there be any database in Sweden which would allow me to find a family with that combination of names living in a specific area, for example, in the year 1870 or 1880?

Hello, Elisabeth,

This is very encouraging.  All the key facts appear to match except the year of immigration which is two years later than I expected.  But, again, I am relying on family lore--word of mouth passed on to my mother from her mother.

My next step is to determine whether I might have any relatives still living in Sweden.

Elisabeth, I am so grateful to you and to Anbytarforum.

Thank you, Carl, for the extremely helpful information.  I have one other mystery that someone might be able to help me solve.  I have a photograph of my great-grandmother, Ida Carolina Emilia Eriksdotter, purportedly taken at a Lutheran Church ladies aid meeting in Hancock County, Iowa, around 1916.  Is it possible she might have visited her sons and daughter in America and then returned to Sweden before her death?  How unusual would such a trip have been in those days?  Would it be possible to locate a record of such a trip in Sweden?  The only other explanation would be that the woman in the photo has been misidentified or the photo was actually taken in Sweden.  If anyone can shed some light on the subject it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gary, there probably wouldn't be a record of that trip in the Swedish parish records since your great-grandmother likely wouldn't have reported it to the parish priest if she wasn't  permanently moving to the United States.  Instead you might be able to find a US port passenger manifest or border crossing record, though I've looked some and haven't been able to find any that look like it could be her.  This might be because her name was mistranscribed by the indexer.  My great-grandfather Måns Jönsson came to the US in 1905 to visit my grandmother and her two sisters but the passenger manifest was tricky to find since he was travelling under the surname Nelson (all of his children who came to the US used that surname since Månsson was too difficult for Americans to pronounce) and the indexer misread his first name as Maris.

I understand.  Thanks, Carl.  I am also finding it very difficult to find documentation of my ancestor and his siblings arriving at the Port of New York.  I am finding several passengers who could be my grandfather but they arrived in April or June of 1886.  That would have been months after leaving Sweden in December, 1885.  Is it possible some Swedish emigrants took that long to arrive at their destination?  Another question, would my grandfather have carried with him some kind of family history church documents--a kind of letter of transferral to his new church in America?

Hi Gary, that Dec 1885 date for your ancestor was the date when he went to the parish priest to tell him that he was moving out of the parish.  During that era it usually took about 2 weeks to make the trip once the individual started his journey.  My grandmother's brother went to his priest in southern Sweden on 10 Jan 1893, left Copenhagen on 1 Feb 1893, and arrived in New York on 16 Feb 1893.  So it is possible that your ancestor might not have emigrated immediately after going to see the priest.  Have you checked his naturalization records such as his Petition for Naturalization, those documents sometimes listed the date when they arrived in the US as well as the boat?

Your ancestor did receive a document from the priest, called a Flyttningsbevis or Flyttningsbetyg. The purpose of the document was to provide information about the individual to the priest in the parish to which he was moving, so when someone emigrated it was often instead kept by the individual.  You can see an example from 1888 in a document published by the Swedish Information Service of the Consulate General of Sweden in New York at http://www.swedenabroad.com/SelectImage/15063/tracingyourswedishancestry.pdf.  Incidentally, Arkivdigital (a service that offers subscription access to digitized Swedish records) is offering free access to their service this weekend: http://www.arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/try-for-free/?utm_source=newslette r-150317-eng&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter.

Hello again. I have some additional questions regarding the emigration of the sons and daughters of Johan Peter August Johansson of Hallingeberg, Kalmar, Sweden.  I now have the emigration dates for Carl Viktor, August Walfrid, and Anna Mathilda Johansson, but I've been unable to find the dates, passenger lists, or the names of the ships they traveled on when they left the port in Sweden.

As noted earlier, Carl Viktor Johansson (b. 6/5/1871) emigrated 3/16/1888 to North America.  August Walfrid Johansson (b. 11/12/1873) emigrated 4/28/1893 to North America.  Anna Mathilda Johansdotter (b. 2/25/1869) emigrated 10/24/1888 to North America.

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you might be able to provide.
