Franz Axel Bergman was born 14/1/1849 in Stockholm to Gustav and Ulrica Bergman. Gustav was a solicitor. His sister, Cecilia also came to Australia. Unfortunately, his Swedish records were lost after he died. In Australia, he worked as a master of a steamer trading on the Murray River. I have found a record of a Mr Bergman and Miss Bergman arriving in Melbourne on 20 Feb 1869 on the Sometshire from England as unassisted emmigrants.Would there be a record of their voyage from Sweden to England if this is them? Cecilia married and lived in Melbourne.I would like to know about their family in Sweden- their parents; were there other siblings; grandparents.

In the 1855 tax records (mantalslängd, referring to the situation in Nov 1854) the family lives in Klara parish, Stockholm. The father is Frans Gustaf Bergman born 1 July 1808, former shop keeper or tradesman. Mother: Johannna Ulrica born 13 Nov 1825. Sister Johanna Cecilia born 30 Jan 1853,  brother Gustav Adolph born 19 Nov 1850. Next year they are living in Katarina parish.

In 1878, the first year of the roteman system (population record keeping in Stockholm) the widow Johanna Ulrika Bergman is house keeper for a year in Jacob parish. She seems to have two daughters, Amalia Rosalie Amanda Bergman born 8 Jan 1857 and Alexandra Teresia Bergman born 15 April 1865. Amalia stays on until 1884, she has come from Örebro in 1878. Alexandra moves to a relative, mr Blom where there seems to be another sister, Henrietta Gustava born 19 June 1862. I have to do more checks on these daughters before I can confirm that they are indeed sisters to Frans. But the interesting thing is that Johanna Cecilia, the sister that went to Australia, is married to mr Fritz Anton Blom. They have two children, Tyra Antoinetta Cecilia born 26 Aug 1877 (unknown place) and Fritz Thor born 25 March 1879 in Jacob parish, Stockholm. They move to another part of Stockholm (Tegner, not yet registered) in 1880.

In the 1890 census they are still living in Stockholm, they are still there in 1900:

Blom, Fritz Anton   1849   Far (father)
Bergman, Johanna Cecilia   1853   Mor (mother)
(Barn), Tyra Antoinetta Cecilia   1877   Barn (child)
(Barn), Fritz Thor   1879   Barn
(Barn), Nils Gustaf Fredrik   1886   Barn

Fritz Blom is buried in Stockholm 19 Nov 1930
Johanna Cecilia 13 Jan 1927
Nils Gustaf Fredrik 26 May 1954

I have not found Frans Axel in the censuses, presumably he has left for Australia.

Amalia Rosalie marries a shop keeper in Malmö, South Sweden and in 1890 she has a big family:
Jönsson Persson, Jöns Peter   1857   Far
Bergman, Amalia Rosalie Amanda   1857   Mor
(Barn), Tyra Anna Amalia   1879   Barn
(Barn), Knut Mauritz Constantin   1880   Barn
(Barn), Klas Gustaf Leonard   1882   Barn
(Barn), Emmy Victoria Constantia   1885   Barn
(Barn), Svea Regina Margareta   1888   Barn
(Barn), Göta Henrietta Concordia   1889   Barn

In 1900 there are two more children and her husband has taken the name Löfmark. He has become a wholeseller, they live in Gothenburg.
I cannot find the other two sisters.

Could the Cecilia that went to Australia be Frans Axel´s niece Tyra Cecilia?

Johanna Ulrika Bergman was born Johanna Ulrika Östergren in Spånga parish 20 Nov 1825. Her husband died 16 Sept 1866. There was another duaghter, Anna Sofia Mathilda born 23 Sept 1859 in Katarina parish, Stockholm. In 1890 they live in Gothenburg. Anna is married in 1891. This according to the household records (AIa:40, p 66). If we look at the birth records from Spånga, she was actually born on the 13 Nov and christened the 20th. Daughter of farm hand Hans Östergren and Vivica Boberg.

Anna Sofia Mathilda marries Frans Oskar Stenvall, artist, born 1856. They live in the South, Västra Sallerup, in 1900.

Frans Oscar Stenwall who married Anna Sofia was a relatively well known artist, he died in 1916. He painted a lot of Gothenburg scenes:

I have read through your information and was surprised that Cecilia stayed & married in Sweden.I only knew of Cecilia through my grandmother, Franz' daughter. So, it could well have been his niece that came to Australia. I was told she married a German, Strobel, in Melbourne where they ran a theatre restaurant. Their children were named Tyra and Adolph and Tyra was Cecilia's first name. I have not been able to make contact with this branch of the family but should try in order to confirm these details.
Thank you again very much.

I thought I had posted a message thanking you for all the information you have found on my great grandfather's family. I must have missed a step when submitting it. I have very much appreciated finding out about his Swedish family because with no written records here and all his children deceased I had no way of accessing information myself. He had 12 children and most lived into their 80s and 90s- my grandmother was 95 when she died and the second youngest and had a good memory but it could be selective! Was Frans Axel being misleading when he indicated on his marriage certificate that his father was a solicitor? Is that advokat in Swedish? A solicitor here is a lawyer involved with legal matters but obviously from what you have found, he was a shopkeeper or tradesman.
Thanking you very much again for all your help.

I have been following with great interest the research on the Bergman family, as Alexandra Theresia born 15 April 1865 is my great-grandmother. She came to live in Australia around 1900 and I see that she emigrated to Denmark 28 September 1888. I am interested to know about her profession as a dancer which is recorded above. I have a photograph taken of her with her son Adolf in San Francisco. Alexandra Theresia and my mother, the daughter of Thyra Strobel visited Amalia Rosalie Amanda Lofmark and her family in 1933 in Vasaplatsen Goteborg. I will be visiting Goteborg on October 15/16 and would like to make contact with family members who may still live there.  I have a photograph of Britte and Inge which was given to me by my mother Margareta Anna Theresia (nee Pearse).

Bruce,
Alexandra is recorded as a dancer as early as the 1880 census (Dec 31, 1880), she is registered as living with her sister and brother-in-law, Fritz Blom, but a note says that she is at present in Lidköping (a town in the South-West). It is slightly unusual for a 15-year old girl to have a recorded profession (except for servants). I have not been able to follow her in Denmark, it is much more difficult there.

Finding descendants can be done but will requre a bit more work, The easiest is to send for estate inventories of Amalia´s children - they are public property, but first we have to find out when and where they died. To start with:
Knut Mauritz Konstantin Löfmark b 22 May 1880 in Gothenburg, dies 21 July 1954 in Gothenburg. He is married (21 Oct 1927). His estate inventory will be in the Archives in Gothenburg (mail: bouppteckning.gla[alpha]landsarkivet-goteborg.ra.se) the first page will list all children as heirs. We are not allowed to write about living persons here, but it is easy to see if you can find the on www.eniro.se (phone book).
