I'm having a very difficult time figuring out the name of my great great uncle's wife.

On the passenger ship list of the S.S. Pretorian in 1902, her name is clearly written as Ingeborg Aslund.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-119.02-e.php?sisn_ id_nbr=4027&page_sequence_nbr=1&interval=20&page_id_nbr=30867&&PHPSESSID=8g881vo lnt5bi2hlk887q5je62

On the birth record of her first daughter in Dec 18, 1902 it is translated as Serfebora Ashland. (Canadian - Nipissing birth records)

On the registration of her marriage in Canada (Sept 24, 1903) her name is even more creative!
Her name is listed as Toxeburg Oshum born in Hedde, Sweden. Her father is listed as Sten Oshum and mother as Matilda Flenderskoom. (Ontario marriages 1801-1926 MS932_111)

In the Canada 1911 census, she appears to be Ingeborg Wennerstrom therefore I'm fairly confident her first name was Ingeborg.

She would have been born in 1879 as she was listed as being 23 on the ship's passenger list.

How could I find out her real name?

Thank you! I have more confidence in the Swedish records than Canadian records - there are many misspellings and misunderstandings when a different language is spoken.

Is it possible that the person who registered Oshum could not understand that she meant Olofsson?

One might ask why she uses Asland as surname when traveling.

On the Norwegian Digitalarkivet is the following found:
Ingeborg Äslund (Äström), 23 years old, from Sweden , heading for Sydbury,Ontario

on the line above is Johan Fredrik Wenneström, 24, from Sweden and also heading for Sydbury, Ontario

Yes, they were both headed to Sudbury, Ontario to meet up with Johan's family. Does this mean that the Ingeborg found by Bo is incorrect or is it an additional piece of the puzzle?

It's interesting that in the 1890 Swedish census his name is listed as Johan Theodor Wennerström, not Johan Frederik. SVARvolume: 000377  Card nr: 13

Mary, I can't say that Bo'sfindings are wrong, just wonder why Ingeborg used that surname at emigration.
When they left for Canada, where had Johan been living? It looks like the father left alone in 1896 and I can see that Johan's sister left in 1903. It is interesting to understand where Johan might have met Ingeborg

Johan Teodor Wennerström (if this is the same man) is living in Katarina parish, Stockholm until 17 June 1902 when he reports as moving to Hede. He is a ship´s boy in the Navy in Skeppsholm´s parish until Jan 23, 1901. He came to the navy base from Sundvall in 1898. Apparently, he went straight to America via Hede. Did they know each other or did they meet on the ship? Why does he have the name Fredrik later, is it really the same man? In 1890 he was living with his parents in Skön, near Sundvall, a fair bit from Hede. He was born in Torp parish.

Interesting facts. We know that Ingeborg was pregnant when travelling and Johan is given as father. So, they must have met before he left for Hede

Yes, they had a daughter Josefina on December 18, 1902 in Copper Cliff, Ontario (Copper Cliff is now Sudbury) She is listed as married on the ship's register when she travelled in 1902 but their marriage is registered as September 24, 1903 in Canada.

I thought they were originally married in Sweden but apparently they were married in Canada.

Thank you so much for all of your help! There is no way I could have figured this puzzle out by myself. It's a mystery why Ingeborg traveled under the name of Äslund but now I feel confident that I know where she came from and what her name was, chosen or not.

I was surprised that Johan added Frederik into his name - could this have been a navy addition? However, he is Johan Teodor in the 1890 Swedish census and in Canada.

The name Fredrik could be just a transcription error, as is probably Äslund, it should be Åslund a common name in the area. He was free from his employment in the navy, but still was liable to military duty like all Swedish men - maybe he ran off without the permission required for men of military age?

Ingrids document was the normal, Permission to leave, but Johan's looks more like a document showing he has left his assignement

Does anyone know if Henrik's wife name was Johanna?

From the 1920 United States census of Beltrami Minnesota a Henry S. Oslund and Johanna Oslund live by John Wenstrom. I suspect that this was Ingeborg's brother as they were referred to as aunt and uncle in the family.

Thanks to all of the help on this forum - I've been in contact with long lost family and we are slowly unravelling our family mysteries through photos and letters.

We uncovered an old postcard from Sweden to Signe Wenstrom and on the back it says many greetings from your cousins Lars and Betty. The only first cousins in Sweden would be children of Olof Stensson.

Does anyone know if Olof Stensson had any chldren named Lars or Betty?

If anyone has any hints on how to include a picture, I'd be very grateful. I seem to be a little lost on how to do it here!

Thank you very much!

BTW, the brother Henrik Stensson with wife Johanna Kristina Svensdotter and their son before marriage Sigurd Emanuel are on the same page, they emigrate 20 May(?) 1903 to USA.

And the father Sten Olofsson with daughter Ingeborg are on the previous page, she emigrates 24 June 1902 to North America.

A widow named Anna Stensson (nee Fundin) born in Vemdalen Aug 26, 1873 dies Oct 24, 1962. She was widowed Sept 4, 1921 according to the Swedish Deaths CD.
The lists of deaths from Statistics Sweden show that Olof Stensson in Vemdalen died 4 Sept 1921, he died at Östersund Hospital (Asylum) from tuberculosis, unfortunately he was also mentally ill. There is a long diagnosis, quite difficult to read so I cannot say if the mental impairment was caused by the TB, it seems he had spinal TB.
