Does anyone have information on Henri ( Henry ) Antilla who emigrated from Finland around 1890.
He arrived in Duluth, Minnesota / Superior, Wisconsin and homesteaded near Maple, Wisconsin.
He is buried in a Finnish cemetery just out of Maple, Wisconsin.

I am his great grandson and am planning a trip to Finland in two weeks.
Would be nice to visit his hometown.

thank you.
Don Norlander ( Nordlander )
Orono, Minnesota, USA.

Could it be this:

http://findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Anttila&GSfn=Hen&GSbyrel=all&G Sdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=45434511&df=all&

It says he was born in Vaasa, Ostrobothnia.

Best Regards

A Henrik Anttila left Finland on Oct 2, 1893, a Hendry Anttila March 10, 1900 according to Migration Institute Passenger list.

According to Passport records two Henrik Anttila went to America, one born 1883, one born 1893.

The name is quite common, without date of birth he will be diffucult to track down.

Stefan Nyman:     you have a winner!  that is my great grandfather's head stone.    looks like he was born in 9/12/1849.   We had an Anttila reunion 20 years ago near Maple, Wisconsin and we all drove over to the cemetery.

(Henri spent some time in Duluth, MN before finding homestead land near Maple, Wisconsin.. virgin pine.   A large timber company came through the area and bought timber rights from most of the homesteaders..  providing them the $ to start their lives..  Henri had a dairy and hay operation.  )

Henri was born in Vaasa... is that where he emigrated from?   and what of his wife Maria?    was she from Vaasa also?

thank everyone for their time on this.. very much appreciated!   I am travelling to the area in three weeks after waiting a lifetime to come!

i grew up in Two Harbors, Minnesota... i grew up with many kids of Finnish descent.     Many communities in Northeast Minnesota had large Finnish populations.. i live in Orono.. near Minneapolis now... many Finns just west of here... Dassel, Cokato, area.

I think Maria was from Savo village Lappajaervi parish in South Ostrobothnia, approximately 100 km from Vasa.

It is born a Maria Mattsdotter Karvala there 1859-08-21.

From the birthbook, middle of the right side:

From the parish book, with parents and siblings, second from bottom of the page:

I have not found a birthplace of Henri Anttila yet.

Henri (Heikki in Finnish, Henrik in Swedish) is most likely to be born 12/9/1951 in Alajärvi parish, Kurejoki village and Anttila homestead. http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=7620576 (11th from top)

Savo village (Savokylä) with Karvala homestead is in the north and Kurejoki in the south on this map http://kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi/kartanhaku/paikannimihaku.html?e=328696&n=6997151&scale=150000&width=600&height=600&tool=siirra&lang=en

Here is Henri and Maria in Lappajärvi parish book 1878-87. The column to the right is called moved to and i think it says Minnesotaan 5/9 1891. In english To Minnesota 5/9 1891

Here is a nice hotel in Lappajärvi where you may stay a day or two. Pretty close to the villages that you will visit.

http://kivitippu.fi/.

Unfortunately, it looks as if they would not have their website in English.

i was able to visit Karvela and kurejoki.
in kurejoki, a local directed me to a home.. the man there pointed out the Antilla farm to me...  they had all left by the 1950's..
how wonderful.
i hope Finland never changes.
Much like northern Minnesota where i am from... lakes, woods, etc.   i should have brought my fishing gear and done some pike fishing!

Finland was so clean, quiet, orderly, peaceful.
felt like 'home'..

thanks everyone for your help!   i enjoyed my visit.

I am trying to find immigration information for Henry (born 09/12/1851) and Maria (born 9/21/1859) Anttila. They left Finland in September 1881. I have searched ship manifests but can not locate them. I was wondering if they are listed in any of the Swedish emigration records.
Thanks,
Lynette Norlander Case

I cannot find them in the Swedish "Emigranten Populär" database (2006).
But I am not sure what you really want to know by your question, the time BEFORE or AFTER 1881? If you add more information about their background in Finland, there is a better chance that we could help you.
Regards,
Leif
