How would I be able to find the name of the village that a person lived in?  The name of the parish they belonged to was Norra Möckleby.  What towns or villgaes were incorporated into that parish?

Hi Bill, it depends.

The easiest way is probably if you post the names, date of birth and any additional information that you might have here and we'll help you find out exactly where they came from.

You'll find Norra Möckelby here

Here's the information that I have.
Wilhelm Gustafsson b. 3 Nov. 1864 Oscar parish; wife Emma Sofia Henriksson b. 1 May(?) 1851 Runsten parish, son Karl Henri Ferdinand b. 29 Jun 1891 Norra Möckleby, son John Martin b. 12 Feb 1894 Norra Möckleby, son Pehr Ernst Leonard b. 16 Mar 1896 Norra Möckleby.  there is also another person that resided with them: Sara Kristina Jonasdotter b. 19 Sept 1845 Norra Möckleby.  I do not know their relationship.
Wilhelm left Oscar on 15 Nov 1889, arrived in Öland on 23 Nov 1889, married Emma on 30 Dec 1889.  In the immigration/emigration records, it shows that he arrived to Prestgarden(?) Is that correct?
I am trying to decipher this info as well as try to find the name of the town that they had lived and when and where Karl Henri Ferdinand emigrated to the U.S.
Thank you for the help in advance
Bill

Hi Bill,

Norra Möckleby (the parish/town), Kalmar län (county), Öland landskap (province). Oskar is also within the Kalmar län and Ölands landsskap and so is Runsten.

Prästgård (also sometimes Prestgård) = vicarage, rectory. Although Wilhelm Gustafsson was not a priest. 1890 states that he was a farmer and 1900 it says that he is a crofter more than likely farming land that the priest owned.

You'll find an image of the church (kyrka) here:
http://tinyurl.com/ytv95x
I cannot link directly to the image so click on the link to the left that says  Norra Möckleby kyrka. Some more images from Norra Möckleby http://tinyurl.com/2bewd3

I cannot find Karl Henrik Ferdinand on the Emibas CD. I found his brother on the Swedish death index CD where it says that he used the last name Gustafsson but I still couldn't find him.

Best regards
Anna

Hey Anna,
Thank you for shedding some light on Wilhelm Gustafsson.  As for Karl, he seems to be more of a mystery.  He is my Great grandfather, and at some point during his life he (or someone) changed the spelling to Gustavson.  He fought with US in WWI, in which his name had already been changed to a v instead of an f and only one s.  His first name also changed to Charles instead of Karl. I belive the Ferdinand was dropped as well.  When and why this all happened, I have no idea.  I do realize that names change when people immigrate to the US for many reasons. i.e. illiteracy, pronounciation, language barriers, ease, respect for their homeland etc...  But it doesn't make sense as to why so much changed.  I know he wasn't illiterate, and could speak English.  Perhaps he was running from something?

Hi Bill,

I'll send you the information about his brother from the death index by email and let you know how to obtain more information about him. If his brother had children, they might still be alive and might have the answers for you.

Anna,
I have requested the bouppteckning like you said, however I haven't heard back from them yet.  Does it normally take a while?  Anyway, I have discovered that Karl Henri Gustafsson married to Ellen Mathilda Johansson.  We are unsure of the date, and we think that it might have happened here in the US.  Ellen, we believe worked for the Esther household here in New York, but we cannot find definate records of either one coming in to the US.  We've checked NY, Baltimore and Canada.  I might have missed it somewhere.  Ellen Mathilda b. 23 April 1885 in Malmö Caroli. Father Johan August Johansson b. 14 jun 1858 Mother Maria Kristina Olivia Hallgren b. 29 Oct 1850, siblings: Klara Johanna 1878, Astrid Maria 1870 and August Ernst Emmanuel 1872 all born in Visby.  Can you find either Karl or Ellen on any immigration records?  Also would there be any records as to why Ellen would've been born in Malmö Carolii while the others, including her older sister were born in Visby?  I've located this information in the Gotland kn, Hemse parish household examinations 1884-1893.

Thank You Birgitta,
I have found his records now.  It seems that he left from Malmö 19/4 1910 and arrived in New York 2/5 1910 by way of Liverpool.  I am unsure of when he arrived in England and left England, but at least I'm a little bit closer than I was before.  The records show that he lived in Glömminge, as do his father's death records, however the parish records am searching through Genline do not contain years after 1900.  (or at least, very few records)  Can you help me find when the family moved from Norra Möckleby to Glömminge?  Aslo, perhaps find out when he (Karl) left Öland for Malmö?

Birgitta,
I have found that Karl wasn't travelling alone to NY.  According to what I have discovered he was travelling with his cousins Amy Andersson and Signe Andersson from Algutsrum.  Would that be a different parish?  If so what parish would thay have belonged to?

Algutsrum is another parish in Öland, just south of Glömminge.
Wilhelm Gustafsson and his family moved from N.Möckleby to Glömminge 1900-1910.
His wife Emma Sofia died 8/1 1917 in Glömminge and Wilhelm married Elin Ottilia Petersson born 1887.
They had two sons, John Gustaf Martin Erling 28/6 1921 and Verner Nils Sixten 11/6 1926. They are both dead, unmarried.
Wilhelm died 3/8 1948 and Elin Ottilia 24/3 1934.
His son John Martin born 17/2 1894 died 4/8 1910.

Birgitta,
Does your records show the cause of death for John Martin on 4/8 1910?  Also Wilhelm Gustafsson emigrated to N. Möckleby on 23/11 1889 and married Emma Sofia on 30/12 1889, just 1 month later.  She is also 15 years his senior.  Is this a typical scenario during that time?  Or was it something he had to do, for instance, the parish wanting him to be married to work as a crofter?  Or if she became pregnant and they needed to be married, I couldn't find any records of another child born before Karl Henrik Ferdinand (b. 1891).  Would there be some record of a miscarriage, if that was the case?
Thank you so much for all the help everyone has been giving me in my research.  I'd still be banging my head against a wall if it weren't the message board.

I have searched the household records for Norra Möckleby and found that in the 1861-1868 records it shows an Anna Mathilda Gustava b. 8/10 1865, but it is written above another name Hilda Christina(?). Is she Hilda's daughter? Perhaps she was living there for a little while before Hilda and baby Anna moved?  Just lookig for some clarification.  GID 125.1 AI:7 p. 144

Birgitta,
Thanks so much for the help. I hate to keep hounding you guys for answers, but I'm terrible at translations and it seems that you have more access to records that can provide more answers.
GID 125.9;AI:6; Household examinations for Norra Möckleby 1856-1860 p.130 there are two names crossed out, lines 7 and 8.  I believe it to read Maria Fredrica (line 70) and Julia Eugenia (line 8).
line 7 Maria Fredrica b. 29 Oct 1856 N. Möckleby, bapt. 7 Nov 1859 d. 15 Dec 1859, 3 yrs 1 mo. 16 days
line 8 Julia Eugenia b.5 Nov 1858 N. Möckleby bapt. 12 Nov 1858 d. 7 Nov 1859 1 yr 22 days (should say 2 days)
Can you tell what caused their death?  they only died abt a month apart.
And of course, another question.
GID 125.24;AI:9 Household examinations for N. Möckleby 1872-1881 p.278 lines 6 and 7.  the names are again crossed out, but this time I cannpt read who they are.  Line 6 says that the person was born 4 Mar 1881 but died 3 Jul 1881 and line 7 I thinks says Albert Wilhelm D(?) Nilson b. 4 Sept. 1864 and arrived in the pråstgården 20 Jul 1876 but left for Stockholm 10 Oct 1876.  On p. 130 of the same book, he is on a seperate line as if he were alone, but here he is with the Henriksson family.  I am trying to find the relation, if any, of line 7 to the Henrikssons as well as find out whose baby is line 6?  Gustava and Nils would have been in their 60's.
Thanks again
Bill
