I'm trying without success to find the emigration date of Albin Julius Gottfrid Larsson, last name changed to Lind, born July 3, 1875 in Döderhult, Kalmar, and thought perhaps some indication would be mentioned in the parish records from Kristdala since in 1885 he moved there with his family.  I believe he emigrated to either Canada or the US anywhere after 1891.  To the best of my knowledge, he never married.  Any help in finding this information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Är det någon boende i Växjö som kan hjälpa Audrey.? Finner inte hennes sökning i Emigrant-skivan.
Funnit 1 st Lindqvist Albin J 36 fr A-län 1892--vilket inte stämmer helt fullt.

Audrey,

Please note, Döderhult is not in Kalmar landsförsamling. It is it's own parish, located by Oskarshamn in the middle of the County.
I can't find his emigration note at Emigranten record.

Sorry, I didn't mean to mix up the parishes, but I thought since I was told that the family had moved to Kristdala in 1885, the same year that Selma was born, I would post on that board.  This 1890 Census information shows differently.

Thank you for your help.  I'm starting to believe that the date of his emigration will always remain a mystery to me!  I had so hoped that I would be able to somehow find it.

Audrey,

Sorry, I see now I'll give you wrong information. As you can see yourself at the end of each person they live at the farm Malghult No 2 in Kristdala Parish. The last children, Selma Ottilia Sofia, are born there 1885.

The archives in Göteborg had previously given me the date of an Albin Lind leaving from there 1903 June 10, källkod: 73:275:38895, as an American citizen, going to Axtell, Kansas.  Is there any way to verify if this is in fact Albin Julius Gottrid Larsson (Lind) born 1875 July 03 from Kristdala parish? Their reply surprised me by saying he was an American citizen as our family only knew that he came to Canada.

I can't read the site you suggested since I don't know how to read Swedish.  Would you be able to tell what date he left from Stockholm?

Thank you.

Albin Julius Gottfrid Lind is indeed recorded as sailor #616 in the Stockholm Seamen's Registry, and that info comes from special database on a CD, which covers everyone who lived in Klara parish 1878-1926.

Mr. Lind lived at Bryggaregatan #1, but on 1904 Dec.31 he is listed as living at place unknown, which means that he had left Stockholm after 1902, when he registered as a sailor. He had not bothered to get his proper papers, and no one knew where he was. It is likely that he jumped ship, and that info might be found in the records of the Stockholm Seamen's Registry (Sjömanshus). Those are kept at the Stockholms Stadsarkiv, where you might send an e-mail to stadsarkivet@ssa.stockholm.se  and ask about this.

Elisabeth,

Thanks so much for the above information, it explains to me exactly what happened to him after he registered at Klara, Stockholm in 1902. I had not understood how the Seaman's Registry worked and I appreciate your time in giving me this explanation.  I will email the Stockholms Stadsarkiv to see whether they will provide me with any information.

I assume then that the information I received from the Göteborg archives about an Albin Lind leaving there on June 10, 1903 is possibly not for the same Albin Lind?

Hej Elisabeth

Tack för att du informerade Audrey.
Jag var osäker på hur man skulle översätta sjömanshus.
I det engelska lexion jag använde föreslog man shipping office men det är å andra sidan från 1928.
Albin Julius Gottfrid Lind had a brother Emil Martin Sällfrid b July 26, 1881 in Döderhult parish.
He emigrated from Kristdala parish in 1904, his destination, Montreal. CD-emigranten source; 76:179:1886.

Mvh

Audrey, the info from Göteborg is most likely for someone else.

Britt-Maria, det är inte så enkelt att översätta våra inrättningar till engelska, och ofta finns det flera varianter, men jag tror att den jag använde är hyfsat begriplig. Shipping office tycker jag mer låter som rederiets kontor eller något.

Thanks so much for the information.  I also feel that the information from Göteborg is for someone else and that Albin Julius Gottrid Lind jumped ship to come to Canada and I'll probably never find the exact date that he arrived.

Also, thanks for supplying the emigration date for his brother Emil Martin Sällfrid Larsson - that's another problem out of the way.  However, I do have one other question about Emil.  In the obituary for Emil's death in Canada it states that he had served in the Swedish army.  I know that Albin did, but is there anyway to find out if Emil did too?

In 1890 there were four Albin Linds in Sweden and two Albin Gottfrid Juliuses, one of whom later took the name Lind. It is thus quite possible that the one noted in the Göteborg archives is not the one you are looking for.

Thanks so much for supplying this information.  It now makes me believe that my great-uncle Albin Julius Gottfrid Larsson (Lind) jumped ship in Stockholm since he was a sailor.  I know for a fact that he changed his last name to Lind, most likely when he registered at the Göta artillery regiment in 1897.  His brother Emil who emigrated in 1904 and his sister Selma (my grandmother) who emigrated in 1906, both changed their last names to Lind after arriving in Canada.  This makes me think that Albin had to have been here from about 1903 and on, since no more information can be found about him after he left the Seaman's house in Stockholm after 1902.

Selma was married in Winnipeg, Canada under the last name of Lind in 1909 and I have a copy of her marriage certificate showing this.  Emil was married under the name Lind and used the last name of Lind his whole life.  His two children also had the last name of Lind.

Christina, did your Backman family originally come from the area of Jamtland?  Some of my ancestors were named Backman.  Anna Jakobsdotter Östberg born April 4, 1850 in Kall parish married Anders Olofsson Backman born August 2, 1838. Four of their children that I know of were Janne b. 1870, Märet b. 1872, Johan b. 1874 and Lars b. 1877.  I've been trying to find out more information about them.

I am responding once more to say that I received wonderful information from the Stockholm's Seamen's Registry as Elisabeth had suggested regarding Albin Lind.

From January 13, 1902 to April 8, 1902 Albin was a charcoal-burner on a boat between Gothenburg and Burnt Island.  On May 13, 1902 he signed on the ship Najaden in Aarhus and on September 13, 1902 he left the ship in Dovre.

Now I would like to know where all of these places are.  I've found there are various places with the name of Burnt Island, both in the US and Canada, but I cannot identify which one  would have been the route from Gothenburg or which boat would have been used for these trips.

After leaving the ship in Dovre, where might he have boarded (or jumped) a ship to come to America?

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Per my query above, I just received information from Canadian Immigration for Albin Julius Gottfrid Larsson Lind born 1875-07-03.  He stated in his Canadian citizenship papers that he left from Gothenburg, Sweden via Kew and Liverpool and arrived New York in May or June 1903, then travelled up to Canada via Montreal to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he applied for his papers in 1906, which was the normal 3-year residency period in Canada before he could do so.

Since he cannot be found in the records leaving from Gothenburg at this time, and since he had previously been a sailor, could he have possibly worked on the ship leaving Gothenburg and not be registered as leaving from there?  Did these men have to register to board the ship in Gothenburg?

The last parish record I had showed him moving from Kristdala to Stockholm in December 1901.  When he left the ship as a sailor in September 13, 1902 (above) he must have made his way back home to Kristdala.  Are there any other types of records that exist that would show him leaving from there again in 1903?  The other Albin Lind leaving from Gothenburg in June 1903 as an Americian citizen was born in 1876, and I have found is not the Albin Larsson Lind that I am searching for.  Any further help would be appreciated.
