Quite a long time ago I posted a query on here about attempting to track the Swedish (and most interesting) side of my family tree. The main link I have is through my Great-Grandfather Charles John Friberg. Also known as Carl Johan and possibly Karl Johann.

Charles came to the UK in the late 1800s and appears to have been born in or near Malmo in to an Andreas Friberg. We have the attached certificate which shows he married Ellen Lewis in Cardiff, Wales on October 14th 1894. The certificate shows he is a widower and 27 years old suggesting a birth in 1867. However, other records including a census from 1901 & 1911 suggest he was actually born in 1858.  Charles died in October 1916 in Newport, South Wales.

As I mentioned earlier, some kind souls on the forum suggested two possible leads.

1 Carl Johan was married to Anna Christina Mauritsson, had a daughter Anna Signe Friberg (who emigrated to the USA as a child). Anna Christina sadly passed away not long after her daughter's birth.  This would track with Charles' details as a widower, but the birth year is 1 year out and the father's name for this person is Anders, not Andreas.

I would dearly love to get some clarity on this.  I'm willing to share whatever information I have.

In hope

Lyndon

There wasn't much to go on. Malmö does not match.
But I found three Carl Johan Fribergs who were born between 1850-1870 and emigrated. One was only 7 years old so he fell away. But one also had a father Anders. CJ was born March 2, 1868 and emigrated in 1889 to something I can't read. The place he comes from can be found here in GoogleMaps:
https://www.arkivdigital.se usually has a free trial. They have a good search function and almost all church books are newly scanned in color.
Otherwise, https://riksarkivet.se/startpage is completely free and EVERYTHING is there.

Hope this helped you!

The old thread is here: https://forum.rotter.se/index.php?topic=77829.0

Reading that, I get the impression that you already have the right guy. A birthyear that's one-off is par for the course, and Andreas and Anders really are the same name, or was at the time.

The one loose thread there was the fathers estate inventory -- and unfortunately I couldn't find one, it seems it was never done.

So I want to add to the confusion/mystery  :)
Please bear with me for this is a bit of a story....

I was trying to figure out what happened to Carl Johan Fribergs daughter Anna Signe Maria born June 11th 1879 Malmö Caroli. And I found this entry in SSDI:
Name:   Anna F Smith
Birth Date:   11 Jun 1879
Birth Place:   Malmio, Sweden
Claim Date:   18 Mar 1947
SSN:   141162575
Notes:   05 Nov 1976: Name listed as ANNA F SMITH

So I thought F for Friberg perhaps and the birth date and birth place was a match. SSN prefix 141 indicates New Jersey.

I think this Anna died in 1950 and I found her obituary in the Courier Post in Camden NJ July 11th 1950. She is the widow to Aaron Smith and leaves a son Burton J Smith and a half sister Mrs Otto Blust in Philadelphia. Burial in the baptist cemetery.
https://sv.findagrave.com/memorial/155651256/anna-f-smith

This is Burton John Smiths marriage record (from Pennsylvania US marriages):
Name:   Burton J. Smith
Gender:   Male
Age:   24
Birth Date:   abt 1903
Marriage Date:   18 Jun 1927
Marriage Place:   Scranton, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, USA
Father:
Aaron Smith
Mother:
Anna Friberg
Spouse:
Marion R. Kinback
Film Number:   002313043

That explains F for Friberg as Annas maiden name.

Ok, so the next step was to figure who this half sister was. After some digging it turns out to be a Hannah Blust born 1891/1892 Philadelphia. Daughter to a danish man named George Fredrickson and a norwegian mother named Valborg. Now, that didn't make sense so I kept digging.

When George and Valborg marries in 1898 her last name is listed as Friberg. And this is her second marriage. An interesting fact is that it is stated that her previous husband was dead at sea ? years ago. Very fuzzy text so I cannot make out exactly how many years:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKJW-WR4L

I then found this marriage in 1888 in Philadelphia:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JJKQ-YTG

It is between a Charles John Friberg and a woman with last name Moe. And then this clip from ancestry (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S Marriage Index):
Name:   Charles John Friberg
Gender:   Male
Spouse:   Inga Helinda Valborg Aurora Moe
Spouse Gender:   Female
Marriage Place:   Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Marriage Year:   1888
Marriage License Number:
18585
Digital GSU Number:   4140424

When George dies in 1925 his obit states that Valborgs maiden name was Moe.

It would make sense to send for his daughter in 1889 after his marriage to Valborg.

Here are a few more references I found a long the way (there is a lot more but is easily found):
1910 census (also a daughter Emily):
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MGZ5-X2B

Emily died young:
https://sv.findagrave.com/memorial/91881942/emily-e-foell

Hannah Blust:
https://sv.findagrave.com/memorial/203010539/hannah-blust

So, I will end this post with two questions:
1. How many Anna Fribergs born June 11th 1879 in Malmö area with a father Charles John/Carl Johan Friberg could there be?
2. Did the Charles John Friberg who at some point in time lived in Philadelphia really die or did he disappear to Europe/Wales and start a new family?

This really is a mystery.

I have census information from Wales in 1901 and 1911 to indicate that "my" Charles John Friberg was in Wales by this time, and married to Ellen Lewis.  My own searches found the Charles John in the USA, but the timings didn't seem right and there's been nothing said about living in America within the family, but then he did die before my father was born, and my grandfather and grandmother both died before I became interested in this.

However, and here's the interesting bit for me.

The Carl Johan we're discussing was the son of Anders and Johanna Friberg (Nilsdotter)

They had a child named Alma Antoinette Friberg who died very soon after birth.

My grandmother also had a sister with the same name who survived and died when she was 47.

To me, this is circumstantial evidence that it's the same person, but the part about America means he's lost a wife in Sweden, moved to America, married a second time and had more children, then for some reason left America for Wales around the late 1890s, faked his own death(?), and married Ellen in 1894 making her wife number 3 and responsible for possibly 10 or more children

I've actually sent off for a DNA testing kit so who knows, maybe that will help.
