The hunt for the Mad Trapper continues  :)

You probably have better chances of getting answers in another forum, where the focus is on american sources. Just remember to give as much information you can/have up front -- and in the case of the Mad Trapper, it's enough if you can prove they lived after 1932 to rule them out, isn't it? You don't actually need a death date ...

Oscar Leo Nelson is reported dead in 1971 in (a fragment of) a tree on FamilySearch: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZ63-YS3.

He may be the son of Ida Matilda Larsdotter, #4.7.1 of Gustaf and Brittas descendants -- but note that the FS tree says his parents were married in 1889, and #4.7.1 was still unmarried in 1891 when she emigrated with her out-of-wedlock son born in 1890 ...

Karl August, the son of Emma Katarina Johansdotter, #6.2.1 of Gustaf and Brittas descendants, emigrated to N. America in 1912. He went by his patronymic, Andersson, when he boarded Salmo in Gothenburg on Aug 2 for the trip to Hull. His destination is given as Boston, and his birthplace as Leksand, Kronoberg (sic!).

John Efraim Erickson, presumably the son of #6.1.1 Carl Magnus that emigrated with his parents in 1883, is this profile @ FamilySearch.

His brother Elmer died in 1938 and, according  to the obituary linked in his FindAGrave profile, is survived by his mother, three sisters and three brothers. The tree @ FS lists exactly three brothers (and three sisters), and has no large gaps before 1910 ...

Back to Karl August:

in 1947 his father Anders Gustav died, and in the estate inventory is listed 2 children of the deceased Karl August: Karl and Fern, both not yet of age ("omyndiga"). Also a sister, Anna Elisabeth, in Chicago.

I think Carl August died July 5th 1941 in Oklahoma.

There is an obituary for a Carl August Anderson born November 5th 1894 in The Pawnee Courier-Dispatch (Oklahoma).  It mentions his sister Anna in Chicago, a father and a sister in Sweden, and 2 uncles, August and Frank Lindeberg in Chicago and Oklahoma respectively, and one aunt in Redoak, Ohio.

Name:   Carl August Anderson
Gender:   Male
Death Age:   46
Birth Date:   5 Nov 1894
Birth Place:   Govetoap, Sweden
Residence Place:   Pawnee County

Death Place:   Maramec, Okla.
Obituary Date:   24 Jul 1941
Obituary Place:   Pawnee, Oklahoma, USA
Newspaper Title:   The Pawnee Courier-Dispatch
Spouse:
Pauline Pbyfe
Child:
Fern Anderson
Carl Anderson
Fern Decker
Siblings:
Anna Elickson

Although the article states Annas last name as Elickson I think that should be Erickson. From her naturalization:
Name:   Anna Elizabeth Erickson
[Anna Elisabeth Andersson]
Petition Age:   38
Record Type:   Petition
Birth Date:   6 Dec 1896
Birth Place:   Lekaryd, Sweden
Arrival Date:   19 Jul 1922

Petition Date:   4 Oct 1935
Petition Place:   Chicago, Illinois, USA
Spouse:   Joseph Einar
Petition Number:   137853

The two uncles are brothers to Carl August mother, Johan August and Frans Emil, Linderås (F) AI:15 (1868-1872) Bild 331 / sid 321 (AID: v20955.b331.s321, NAD: SE/VALA/00221).

However, the gravestone for Carl August Anderson says 1895:

Staffan, you seem well familiar with the mad trapper. I have never actually looked at this in detail or tried to actually find out who he was, but I do know of him and the stories. Do you have a link to the more recent discussions (if one were to give it a go  :)  )?

Also, do you know if the DNA has been uploaded to gedmatch or if it is only dnasolves.com?

What I know of the Mad Trapper, and the hunt for his ancestors, is all from the internet ... Links explaining how Myth Merchant Films and Othram are involved is in this old post (maybe not that old ...). I'm planning to watch the documentary (it's available on YouTube), but haven't yet.

And I don't know if the DNA has been uploaded to anywhere, or if Othram is keeping it to themselves ... Putting it on GEDMatch or something would seem a good idea :)

Thanks!
Yes, I might also see that at some point.

From what I can tell (quick googling) they want people to submit their DNA to them so they can compare. Gedmatch would open up for everyone which might help things move forward. Not sure if that is the intention, or if there are other aspects to it.

Staffan, you have been of tremendous help over the past year.  Thank you!  You sure know your stuff.  I feel as though I'm closer to finding the Mad Trapper, yet so far away.  Every lead hits a dead end.  At this point I almost feel like he was given up for adoption or fathered by one of these ancestors and deserted.  The hunt continues....

Well, since any one of the male descendants may have fathered a child without it being recorded, it's certainly possible that there simply doesn't exist any written record tying the young Mad Trapper, whatever his name, to a descendant of Gustaf and Britta ...

Also, in Sweden up until 1917, mothers could give birth and be guaranteed anonymity (see "Barnamordsplakatet"), which would have the same effect on the chain-of-evidence.

In any of these cases, it will take a lot of DNA matching to work out the relationships ...
