Attached is a 1695 estate inventory from Stockholm.  Can anyone help me with the part that I've circled?

It is an estate inventory that was done after the death of Nils Johansson Lillman in May 1695.  What does "Sal" before his name mean?  I am not sure what else that part says and wonder also what the reference to Hans von Gerdes is.  I'm trying to figure out if Lillman is a soldier name or ?.  Not sure at all what his connection to Stockholm would be.

His death record can be found at:

If anyone can help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks very much,

Vicki

...och wärdera egendomen som fantz efter sal. Niels Johansson Lillman, Borgmästarens i Göteborg wälb: h: Hans von Gerdes betienter, som sidstlidne d: 28 May är med döden...
...and evaluate the possessions remaining after deceased Niels Johansson Lillman, the Mayor in Gothenburgs Hans von Gerdes assistant, that last 28 of May with death...
Sal is short for Salig, in heaven. And Hans von Gerde was his employer. Lillman is probably not a soldiers name but rather a citizens name, people living in the cities often got "real" surnames.

Thank you for your help with this.  This is very interesting information.  I suspected that he was not a soldier but have no idea why he would have been in Stockholm at all.  My ancestor is one of the sisters (and their husbands) mentioned in his estate inventory.  He is the only one with that the Lillman surname.  My ancestor is Kierstin Johansdotter, married to Nils Jönsson.  On the last page of the inventory, are the marks there actually their signatures?

I realize you can't answer this question for certain, but I'm wondering, since I don't know where the family came from further back, is it more likely that he (the only son) left farming in the parishes in Kronoberg to go to Stockholm or that the family originated from the city of Stockholm and moved out to the various parishes in Kronoberg?  Not sure what the migration was like during those years - mid to late 1600's.

Thanks again for your help and insight,

Vicki

The marks are their signature, it's called "bomärke" in swedish.

That boy was probably sent to Stockholm in hope of a better life. Maybe he showed some promise and was noticed by someone with the power and funds to help him.

Thanks very much for this.  The link to information on the "bomärke" is very interesting!

It is something new I haven't encountered so I much appreciate your thoughts.

"Sal Nils Johansson Lillman" means the late Nils Johansson Lillman or the blessed Nils Johansson Lillman. "Sal" is an abbreviation of "salig(e)", meaning that he is deceased and in heaven.

You're welcome! It is sometimes also spelled "sahl" for "sahlig(e)".
