Ola Nilsson is born 1775-01-22
Elna Pehrsdotter is born 1777-05-20

Tog bara 6 år för detta svar men vad sjutton gör väl det

Hejsan herinde!

Being a dane I choose to write my questions in english, just to avoid any misunderstandings from danish.
I hope yu forgive me for that, and I hope this is the right place for my questions  ;-)

I descend from Pehr Persson (Pärsson) Herbst born 31.01.1835 in No 8 Lyngsiö, Kristianstad Län, as illegitimate son of Elna Bengtsdotter (born 30.12.1806 in Östra Sönnarslöv).

In Lyngsjö church books no father is named, and also noone with the name Herbst acted godfather/-mother at baptismal.

At the time the house master of No. 8 Lyngsjö was Ingenieur Bengt Johan Herbst, married to Johanna Margaretha Lysell.

Pehr emigrates to Denmark as a miller, where he arrives on 24.05.1863, naming himself Peder Pedersen Herbst. Very soon hereafter he marries Else Marie Madsdatter and leases a mill i Denmark, which indicates that he was not very poor and without any money when he arrived. His positions in the local comunities where he lived in Denmark indicates that he did not have a poor life in Sweden. Sadly, he only lived until the age of 43.

Between his birth and his emigration I don't have any information of him at all.

Therefore I have quite a few questions coming into my mind:

1. What happened to Pehr and his mother Elna after his birth? - where did they live?
2. Did Pehr have the surname Herbst while living in Sweden?
   a. If no, how could he take the surname Herbst in Denmark?
   b. Was it common at the time to take the surname of the family where you served?
3. Was his mother Elna a maid/servant on the estate No. 8 Lyngsjö?
4. Is there any indications that his father could be Bengt Johan Herbst from No.8 Lyngsjö?
5. Is there any indications that B J Herbst (or someone else) was supporting them during Pehrs childhood and adolescence, since he did not seem to be without any means when arriving to Denmark? (in the parish registration for his entry to Denmark it is noted: Son of fine piece of land)

I know all these are a lot of open questions, and I don't expect anyone to be able to answer them all. But any kind of information to my questions will be very much appreciated, since I know nothing at all so far.

Thank you very much in advance!  ;-)

Hälsningar,
Sonny Herbst Jacobsen

Hey Sonny! Will do my best to see what I can give to you. First of all, it's not often the father admits he's the father, especially if he's married, so although the chances are good that Bengt Johan is the father, the likelihood of finding any evidence of this is low.

B J Herbst died in 1852, at No 8 Lyngsjö, but in the few different household inspections I've looked at (1835-1836, 1836-1838 and 1848-1853), I only managed to find Elna listed as living there between 1833-1835 and for a short time 1836-1837. She moved there from Efveröd(Everöd)
Elna and Pehr relocated to No 11 Lyngsjö in 1835, however, during this period, Elna is crossed out without any further note, however Pehr is not, in the next household inspection they're no longer there, and typical as it is, it seems the moving records for this period are not available (on Genline anyways) A little further in, they're found at No 13 Lyngsjö, but again, no note of where they disappear to. Around 1837, Elna reappears at No 8 Lyngsjö, and from there, I believe she moves to Kristianstad (1677.20.88600 - 4th from bottom)Kristianstads moving in book isn't what I'd call easy reading, so without being sure, it's hard to say if she's in there or not.

It's not much, but maybe someone with a little more nouse can fill in a few of the other gaps, I was wondering, do you know which parish he moved from to Denmark?

Otherwise, good luck!

Gary

Hi Gary!
1000 thanks for your swift response, which is very valuable to me.
As said in my original post i know it might be tricky to trace them, and to find evidence for my suspicions of who is Pehrs father.

Unfortunately, the parish registration of his entry only says Sverrig, and for his marriage it says Per Persson (Herbst) fra Lyngsiö af Christiansstads Län.

Anyway, one important question is if Pehr was using the surname Herbst while in Sweden. If so, this would indicate some kind of recognition of his origin. What does the household lists say?

Also, where does the middle name Persson come from?

As said Pehr seemed to have a good portion of money when arriving in DK, as he was able to lease a mill (one of the cornerstones of a local community at that time). Of course he could have earned them himself in Sweden, but most likely, I think, he had a benefactor (the family on his mothers side does not seem to be wealthy).

So, your investigations shows the last appearance of Pehr to be at No 13 Lyngsjö in 1836?

I hope that you or someone else can help me with some more clarification of his whereabouts.

Again:  Many thanks so far!

//Sonny

Hi Joakim!

This is great - many thanks for your effort. This definately gives me some clues to follow
Elnas whereabouts should be pretty clear now, although I still have some work to do regarding little Pär. He seems to be hard to trace until he entered Denmark on 24. May 1863.

Thanks to Gary and Joakim - your help is very much appreciated!

Greetings to everyone!

Now I am asking for your help again about finding my swedish ancestor, Pehr Persson from Lyngsjö (names himself Peter Herbst, later Peder Pedersen Herbst in DK).

More than a year ago I had very good help from you, but I was not able to solve my problem, although it made me able to get further.

Let me resume the case with updated information:

Pehr Persson (Pehrsson, Pärsson etc.), born 31/1 1835 in Lyngsjö, Kristianstad Län, emigrates to Denmark some time in mid 1800. I can locate him first time in Nykøbing Mors 1. february 1860, where he lives and works at a water mill. In swedish bouppteckninger I can locate him in Lyngsjö until 1838 where his mother dies from typhoid fever (nerffeber). From that time on and until 1860 I cannot find him neither in Sweden nor in Denmark. Later he becomes a full trained miller and he leases several mills in DK until he dies in 1878.
A remarkable observation I have made lately is that he, before he marries in DK, goes back to Sweden for a short while, and the returns to DK. I don't know where to he went and why. Maybe he went to DK in the first place just to work temporarily, and then when he met his future wife, he went back to Sweden to settle all his things finally.

Any registration in DK only refers to Sverrig and Skaane as his place of orign.

Specific dates:

Feb 1860:  resides in the town of Nykøbing Mors, DK. Works at a mill.
May 1862:  moves to Fröslev parish and then to Sweden.
May 1863:  returns from Sweden to Mollerup parish. Leases a local water mill.
Jun 1863:  gets married
May 1866:  moves with his family to Aasted parish and leases another local mill.
Dec 1878:  dies in DK.

My challenge is still to locate him and find out from where and when he enters from Sweden - both times. Unfortunately there is nothing to find in danish and swedish church books and bouppteckninger. Maybe he was taken care of by the church in Lyngsjö or Köpinge or he was transfered to the local poor house after his mother died when he was 3 years old.

I sincerely hope someone can help me out here. Thank you in advance.

Regards, Sonny Herbst Jacobsen
