Can anyone help me locate, in the general muster rolls:

TÖRNQVIST Erik
Född: 1698
Död: -
Antagen: 1716
Avsked: 1739
Aktnummer: SU-K5-0052-1716   Regemente: Smålands kavalleriregemente
Rote: Dragaryd Backagård
Kompani: SUNNERBO KOMPANI
Socken: KÅNNA
Torpnummer: SU-K5-0052

His patronymic name is not available on the Central Soldier Register.  I'd like to find out if the patronymic name is listed somewhere in the muster rolls.  I'm trying to figure out if he is the same person as Erik Persson born circa 1698 who later lived and died in Kånna Arvidsgård, Kånna, Kronoberg.

I tried searching in the ArkivDigital: Generalmönsterrullor - Smålands husarregemente (F, G, H) 847 (1724) Image: 10 but was not able to figure out how to find him in there.

Maybe I'm in the wrong place altogether.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Vicki Cihla

He is number 52 in the munster roll for Sunnerbo company. The soldiers numbers corresponds to the crofts number.

Thanks for your response.

Is your reference to the same book?  The volume number is the same but the description is different.  I don't find this entry.  Would you possibly send the link?

Thanks again,

Vicki Cihla

In Arkiv Digital you find Eric Törnqvist in:

About Eric it says: "Swentienaren för dragery Eric Törnqvist för sin siuk och bräckelighet med Rusthållarnes samtycke afsuttet; samma dag d: 27 Sept: 1739 i stället upwist Per Törnqvist...

Yvonne,

First, I thank you for transcribing the note for Erik because I would have had no idea what the letters or words are!

But, the only things I could translate were ill and fragile and same day.  So, I'm guessing he requested to leave his military service because of his poor health and that he was granted a discharge on the same day? 27 sept 1739.

Do I have the right idea?

In the end, do you think it likely that this may be the same man as Erik Persson?   I realize there is no postive proof, but does it seem likely to you?

Thanks for all the help you've given, it's been extremely interesting!

Sorry Victoria,

I was late for work so I forgot to mention that the reference was from Riksarkivet/SVAR.

Yes you are correct. The names above the note about Eric are the farmers that are obliged to keep a soldier and supply him with horse, croft and other equipment. They are called "rusthållare". The translation from the last note of Eric is:
the military servant for Drageryd Eric Törnqvist has because he is ill and weak been discharged with the consent of the "Rusthållare", on the same day instead they have presented Per Törnqvist... etc.
The name Törnqvist was kept for the next holder of the service. Eric could probably not remain in that croft but had to move and did not call himself Törnqvist any more. Since he had been there for quite some time he was probably well established in the parish and could well have remained there, especially if his wife was from that area. Considering also that the age fits, and also the name giving traditions for Eric Persson's daughter's children, it seems likely that they are the same person. BUT it still needs to be proved.... Maybe there is a stray note somewhere where the children, grandchildren are referred to as "Törnqvists's" relatives, so in your shoes I would follow them all. Good luck!
/Yvonne

Yvonne/Kalle,

I've started looking through the earliest birth records for Kånna (1743,4,5) and I noticed a birth record in 1744 - the first birth record on the top of the righthand page - where it looks like the child's mother is Karin Månsdotter who is married to a Jonas or Jons? Jönsson and there is a witness referred to as Erik of Dragaryd Backagård (no patronymic name).

https://app.arkivdigital.se/volume/v30538?image=6

Now I'm really confused - this witness, Erik of Dragaryd Backagård, could it be the soldier Erik (no longer) Törnqvist, and if so, he couldn't be the husband of Karin Månsdotter.

And this is all IF I'm reading it correctly.

I'd welcome your thoughts on this.

Thanks very much,

Vicki Cihla

It is confusing with all these names that are the same. The Karin Månsdotter married to a Jonas Jönsson is a different woman, she died in the 1780:ies. I think the Erik in Dragaryd Backegård was the Erik Bengtsson who died 1787, and he was about 10 years younger than Törnqvist/Persson.

Your Erik and Karin were probably too old to have children that are shown in this birth book that starts 1743, but if you know the names of their other children (if any?) you could follow them when they marry and have children and see witnesses etc. You have seen Elin already, there was a daughter Ingeborg too - I think she married a widower, moved to Ljungby, and came back a few years later as a widow and married again. Do you know of any other siblings?

Wow!  Thank you so much for that - you're correct, it is very confusing!

Yes, I know of 2 brothers Anders and Jöran.  I learned this from the 1776 Estate Inventory of Elin Eriksdotter.  Only Jöran was listed as a brother, but Anders turned up on the 1749 tax roll!   :)

I have started with Elin's children but so far I haven't found anything that might connect the family to the name Törnqvist.

Erik's childrens' birth records aren't available.  I knew about Ingeborg as she is mentioned numerous times on the tax records with her father but I had no idea what happened to her, so that information will be very helpful!

Great!  Now I continue on my path forward through Erik's other children and grandchildren!

I really appreciate this your help (and I hope you weren't too late for work!!),

There is one more source of information, that I am totally ignorant of, Räkenskaper/accounting. In my opinion it is the next level of struggeling, compared to tax records and munster rolls...
But, they do give some information when other books are missing since you had to pay for the services supplied by the parish such as baptism, marriage and burial.
This is the reference in Riksarkivet for accounting in Kånna, 1673-1715.

Kånna kyrkoarkiv, Räkenskaper för kyrkan. Specialer och lånelängder, SE/VaLA/00202/L I b/1 (1673-1715), bildid: C0024828_00112
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0024828_00112

I don't know if there are copies in other archives than the parish.
And the summer extras took good care of the five minutes I was late.  8)

I have not heard of them and have no idea how to use them.  If anyone can tell me how they are used and how they would be helpful, I'm willing to take a look.

Thanks for your help,

Vicki Cihla
