Johan Axel Johansson föddes 4 Oct 1853 nånstans i Stockholm.
Så står det på hans ansökan om australiskt medborgarskap i 1915.
I 1885 bytade han namnet till Johnson och giftade sig i Australien.

Hans fader var Axel Johan Johansson och has moder hetade Ulrika.

Johan Axel Johansson born July 4, 1853 disappears from Stockholm around 1881. He is a stoker. His mother is Ulrika Lovisa Johansson, claiming to be a widow, but it seems she is still married to an absent husband who has been away for 10 years. A note in the population register says that Johan Axel is probably in England. He is declared dead 1953, 100 years after his birth according to the rules.

I think this is the right person, it is not unusual to find birth dates changed among emigrants.

In the 1855 tax records,Johan Axel is listed as the son of Ulrika Lovisa Lundström, spinster. He has also been listed as Lundström. Maybe he knew the name of his father or just made it up(not unusual),alternatively he took the Johansson name from his stepfather.

Thanks for that,
this sounds like the correct man. He claims he arrived in Australia from London in 1883 but I can not find any records of J A Johansson arriving. He gives the name of the vessel he came on as the steamer Glendover from London. The Glendower (w not v) arrived in Sydney on the date he gives, 24th Dec 1853.He says he is a marine engineer but on his wedding certificate he has put stoker.
What documentation have you got that I could get a copy of?Is it possible to find the records of the marriage of his parents so I can trace his lineage? Thanks for your prompt response and the English.

The younger brother,Gustaf, claims that his father was a policeman called Kyhlberg who died in the late 1850s.   He also says in his prison inteview that his elder brother Johan Axel is a machnist on an English steamer. The interview is in 1882.

Gustaf says in 1880,when he is sent to prison for theft, that hus father Johan Elof Johansson is a drunkard and has been in Norrland for the past 10 years. Gustaf has been to school for two years and can read some.

Thanks Chris for all your help,
this is turning into a marvelous story and you have access to the records which I do not.
I am researching Johan Axel for a friend who is his great grand daughter.
Is it possible to find if Emma married and had children?I would like to trace this family.
I would not expect Gustav to have a traceable family.

It is interesting that Gustav says Johan Axel is a machinist on an English steamer in 1852. This substantiates Johan Axel's claim that he was an engineer on the ship. This also rules out the possibility Johan Axel was a deserter. There was another Swede also called Johan Johansson who deserted a ship in Australia in the mid 1850's.
I can also pursue Lovisa Ulrika's family now you have given me her birth record

This is getting better all the time. Are you able to find Gustaf Viktors family?
Should I look myself for Ulrika Lundströms parents myself or can you do this?
It seems that Johan Axel continued his mysterious life in Australia as his wife gives several birth dates and places, non of which can be verified.

Thanks again

Thanks for the correct date on Gustaf, apparently it was corrected in the registers in 1883. He was married to Maria Sofia Hellsten born Feb 21,1840. No children. She dies in 1915.It then says that Gustaf has 17 000 kronor, which is a fortune. It does not help, in 1918 he is arrested for loitering (no work). He seems to spend most of his time in correctional facilities (work house) until the end of the register in 1926. (Source: Rotemansregistret)

Ulrika Lovisa Lundström´s birth date is obscure. The date and place given in her death notice seems to be incorrect. There are sveral variations that are not confirmed. This is the date she gives herself in the tax records of 1860 (also Gustaf´s date is wrong)
