I am wondering what the parents’ names are for Marta Catrina, born 26 Jul 1859, in Graninge, found at  sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0040066_00104.  I can’t tell if the parents are listed first or second.  It seems that they would be on the first line, but I cannot interpret what it says in front of each name.  I have looked in household records for Graninge for 1859 but do not see the family listed.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Carol

I am trying to find out where Anna Andersdotter (9 Feb 1842, Ivetofta) and her daughter Botilla (13 Jan 1863) moved.  The last record  I have is at https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0060628_00407.

There is a note to the right that says something about a Lars Larsson, but I cannot read it.  Could he possibly be the father?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks, Carol

After I posted this I found a Lars Larsson with a note to the right.  I think this is the father of Anna's daughter:

Could someone please translate this note that appears to the right of Lars Andersson Norgren in household record through many years.  I thought it meant that he married a Bengt Mansdotter, but I see no record of a marriage. The latest record I found was at https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0060626_00009.

The first record I found shows him at Kristianstad garnison, 1832-1837 and again refers to Bengt Mansdotter.

I have been searching for the parents of Jonas Olofsson for a number of days and cannot find who they are.  I have a DNA match further down the line so I know that he is in my family tree.

The household records I have for him say that he was born in 1789 in Finnerodja.  I have looked at the birth records for that year and several before and after.

He was married to Maja Stina Jansdotter, 24 Sep 1799, also in Finnerodja.  I have been able to track a number of moves until his death on 18 Aug 1881 at Damstugan, Finnerodja. but I cannot seem to find him before 1824.

The only person who was born in Finnerodja in 1789 who is also in my family tree is Jonas Lindstrom Geting, a soldier.  These two are from the same branch of my tree, but I cannot find the connection with Jonas Olofsson.

The household records don’t go back far enough for me to find Jonas.  At this point I am thinking his mother was an Olofsdotter who was unmarried at the time, but I have not been able to verify this either.

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions as to where I should look next.

The last record I have showing his death is https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0050096_00191

Thanks,

Carol

I have looked everywhere for the date of death for my 5th great-grandmother, Kerstin Johansdotter, born 9 Feb 1696 in Askersund landsformsamling, Orebro.  She was married to Linnar Olofsson, born 16 Sep 1700 in Askersund and died 6 Mar 1763 Store Mosstorp, Undenas, Orebro.  I found his death record, but cannot find hers.  I went through all the death records for Undenas from 1738 on (the birth date of her last child).  I found only one record that might be hers but it was really not legible, 22 Aug 1742.  I have looked at other parishes.  Perhaps some one has access to the Swedish death records that might contain this information.  There are several other family trees on ancestry that have conflicting entries.  I am hoping to find the correct date.  This is where I found Liner's record:

I am so sorry that the text showed up in such a small size.  I did not realize this when I posted.  I will be more careful in the future.

But thank you for verifying the mother, Yvonne.  It did look like the same mother to me, but it’s difficult to read the handwriting and understand what it says.  I even found a website that will allow you to put in a name and transcribe it into Gothic handwriting, but I was still not positive.

Again, thank you both for your help.  Carol

I am trying to verify that the mother of Lenart (Linnar) Olofsson’s children is Kerstin (or Christina) Johansdotter.  Some family trees have Christina Persdotter and some trees have Olof married to three different women.  I believe that Kerstin is the mother of all of his children: Brita, Kerstin, Karin, Johan, Erich, and Lars.  I need someone who can read the Gothic handwriting to verify this.  These are my 5th great grandparents, and the second child Kerstin would be my 4th great-grandmother so I’m hoping this is right.  Otherwise my tree is wrong.

Here are the birth records for the first and last children.  It looks like the same mother to me.  Britta, 5 Aug 1721, https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0000079_00044

Lars, 15 Feb 1738, https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0000079_00125.

In looking at a birth record for Edvard Johan (3 Oct 1884) born in Munktorp to Anna Gustafva Jansson, I am wondering if the notes by the witnesses (Erik Ericksson and Anders Andersson) provide any clues as to the father.  https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/F0005888_00168A household record for Muntorp, 1884-1887,  https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0009813_00059 shows Anna living at V Sorby.  Anders Gustaf Eriksson is also living there.  There are a number of names with a letter “B” to the left.  I’m not sure what this means either.  Anna later marries Anders Gustaf Andersson.  I don’t know what the notations mean so don’t know if either of the two witnesses could be the father.  Some family trees on ancestry list Anders Gustaf Andersson as the father, but I am not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Carol

I am looking at a birth record for Stig Henry Andersson, born 17 Oct 1937, in Undenas, to Gustaf Henry Nathanael Anderson, 1913-1995, and Ester Maria Johansson, 1916-1987.  It seems that they were not married at the time, but the note to the right may indicate that they did get married after the birth.  I cannot find any marriage records for them in Tived or Undenas; but the records may not be complete.  Also, another family tree on ancestry has him as the father of Karl Gosta Holm, 23 May 1936, born in Tived; but I can’t find a birth record for him.

There is a note under Stig Henry’s name which I’m guessing means the father is known, but I don’t see this word in my Swedish-English dictionary.  Also, I cannot read the note to the right.

Any help would be appreciated

I found this note on a later record.  I am thinking that the marriage was annulled.  Is that what this means?

I am looking at a birth record for Karl Eskil, born 12 Jun 1917 to Beda Matilda Ledin f. Larsdotter, 27 May 1884 in Kumla, Orebreo.   The father is listed as Axel Ledin, 4 Mar 1885.  According to the household records I have looked at, Axel Ledin left Kumla for America on 7 Feb 1913.  I did not see him on any household records in Kumla for 1917; however, I did find him on the ship Fridland as a crew member, returning to America on 24 Dec 1917.  So it is possible that he is the father of Karl Eskil.  There is a note to the right of this birth record that I cannot read.  I hope this will provide some additional information if someone can translate it for me.  Thanks so much, Carol

I hope someone can help me with a contradiction in my family tree.  My 4th GGF, Anders Olofsson, 11 Oct 1735 - 5 Dec 1789, was born in Heden, Skellefteå, Västerbotten, Sweden.  I am unsure of the dates as I cannot find any supporting records.  I’ve looked through the records on riksarkivet, but it looks like the records were in a fire possibly.  And they are hard to read.

Also I’ve found some records of an Anders with a birth year of 1933.  However, the big problem is that I have his parents as Olof Jakobsson, 1697-1741, and Brita Andersdotter, 1697-1739, all birth in Skelleftea.  I’m not sure this is accurate either.  I’m hoping someone can confirm his parents.

Something must be wrong as I have 3 DNA matches through an Olof Jakobsson, with different dates and a different wife.  His dates are 1696-1764.  His wife is Karin Andersdotter, 1704-1787.  All are from Skelleftea.

I am thinking that my 5th GGF Olof Jakobsson, born 1697 is wrong.

Any help would be appreciated as I’ve spent 3 days pouring through records that are mostly illegible, and my eyes are burning!

Thanks, Carol

Since there are notes in the column for 1855, wouldn't that indicate he was still alive then?  If this is right, he must have died between 1855-1858.  In any case, I have learned a few things.  I knew the word for widow, but the abbreviations sometimes throw me off.  Carol

In Pitea landsforsamling (BD) AI:9e (1854-1861) Bild:194  Sida: 1344, there is a household record showing Johan still alive, but there is no indication where he went.  I tried Moving Out records but found nothing.

I am looking at Anna Justina Sveningsdotter, 21 Aug 1858, who had 6 children and only one lived.  Two died before the age of one; a son died in 1913 at age 20 of “lungsot”; a son died in 1915 at age 24 of “lungsot”; another son died in Nov 1918 at age 32 of “lungsot”.  Anna died two months earlier in Sep 1918 at age 60, the death listed as “lungtuberkulos”.  Since two died in 1918, I was thinking it was the 1918 flu; but all the others died earlier.  Could it be that tuberculosis ran in the family?  The only survivor was Sven Ernst Karlson (27 May 1888), but there is a notation to the right indicating he was in a hospital (I think).  The household record can be found at (line 5):

https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/80006002_00341

There is another notation on the next page with a wife and children listed.  Could he have been in a hospital for TB?

So glad he made it as I was getting depressed about the rest of the family.

In the Varnamo household records of 1882-1891, it lists Jonas Magnus Andreasson, 24 May 1832, as married to Inga Kristina Johannisdotter, 14 Jan 1836, (my great-grandaunt).  There are four children also.  Johan Magnus and his twin sister are there and are not listed as born out-of-wedlock.  So I am assuming that he is the father as they married in 1864, one year after the twins were born.  I am still wondering why he is in the 1910 Census for Asarum.  This is very confusing to me.  I will try to find the estate records.  Carol

OK.  However, the 1910 Census has him living in Asarum as an unmarried man.  The records from Denmark show him as living in Denmark before 1910 and as a married man.  So I do not think it's the same man.  There are also some some notations on the last household record with dates of 1915 (which I don't understand).  I'm not sure what Maud was referring to when she wrote about his father's estate.

I am trying to determine if these two people did get married or was it called off (Irenes Viktor Sjoholm and Albertina Kristina Johansson).  The record on ancestry has lines drawn through parts of the record.  In the Riksarkivet record https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/80001409_00010  (the first listing for 1896 in Ljungarum) shows no wedding date and entries made under the column labeled Hvilket….

Also a child was born on 8 Feb 1896 and in the column for Modren, there is a check under Trolofvad, which means betrothed.  My feeling is that the wedding never took place.

If I can verify this, it will probably clear up my question before this one.

In the Norberg household records for 1915-1941, SE/ULA/11099/A II a/13, Page 1343 (https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/00182219_00133). there are a lot of comments on this record pertaining to the Engstrom family.  I have tried to sort this out as best I can.  It seems that on line 2 Johan Alfred Engstrom visited America in 1917 but returned to Sweden.  Later he must leave his family for Canada as some family trees have him dying there.  On line 4 his son Johan Emanuel is acknowledging a daughter with Anna Birgitta Magnusson.  Her name is Rut Anna-Stina.  Line 5 has another son Klas Gunnar leaving for Canada in 1919 and a daughter Rut Elisabet leaving for Canada in 1921.  Further down Rut returns from Canada in 1922 but leaves again in 1925.  I don’t know if there is anything else pertaining to her on the notes to the right.  Then on line 7 Gully Linnea marries Erik Johan Gylfe.   Unsure of what else it says.  There is some notation next to Gully’s name “icke dopt”?

Then on line 11 it looks like Rut Elisabet has a child Maria Elisabet???  It says Rut Elisabet ??  There are notations to the right, but I have no idea what they say.

Line 16 also has some notes to the right regarding Johan Emanuel.  Again I don’t know what this says.

Thanks for any help in translating these notations.

Thanks so much.  I believe that this is the right Carl; however, I am tracing him back to make sure.  I looked at the previous records for 1805-1815, and it also shows his death.  Apparently, he moved in from B???  Can you tell where this is?  I am attaching the reference.  Thanks again, Carol

Thanks so much.  I am trying to fill out the family of my 3d great-grandaunt Stina Karlsdotter, born 1757 in Undenas, and her husband Jan Jansson, born 1754, also in Undenas.  I have found 7 children, 4 of whom died as infants.  I also found a daughter, Greta, and have found her husband and children.  Unfortunately she died at 22. So the only ones I cannot find are Maria, born 25 Jul 1786, in Skomakaretorp, Tived, Orebro.; and Carl, born 21 Jan 1794 also at Skomakaretorp.  I'll attach Carl's birth record.

I am attaching the wedding record.  The Carl Jansson I am researching was born 21 Jan 1794 at Skomakaretorp, Tived, Orebro.  Maja Lena was born 1898.  It's difficult to make out the day but it looks like the month is June.  I believe she was born in Vattersvik; however, for some reason I can't bring up the Riksarkivet record.  Don't know if there is a problem or not.  This might not be the right Carl, but the wedding record is the only one that looks promising.  Thanks, Carol

Leif,

Yes, I have.  I thought that since her daughter, Brita Stina Persdotter, had moved to Snavlunda, that she might be with her.  But I did not see her in any of the household records.  So I checked the other daughters also and did not see her.  Brita's husband, Adam Gustafsson, 7 Apr 1807, died in Snavlunda in 1848.  So maybe Stina never moved in with her daughter.  I even looked through the death records for Snavlunda from 1846-1855, and did not see her.  I'm not sure she ever moved to Snavlunda.  There is some kind of note regarding Adam Gustafsson and Enka?? on the household record for Brita, but I'm not sure who this is.

I am tracking Karl Fridolf Karlsson, 18 Mar 1887, Hova. Parents are Karl Johan Olofsson and Maria Sofia Jansdotter.  I have found him in a number of household records.  He has moved around quite a bit.  The last record I have is a moving out record from Glava to ? (I cannot read it) on 23 Nov 1913 (sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/00031828_00075).  He appears on line 71.  And I don’t understand the numbers to the right - 243 45/1997? (I think).  I’ve seen numbers like this in columns that I believe indicate military service, but I don’t know what that means.

I did find what I think might be a death record, but his name reads Karl Fridolf Mentz, 10 Apr 1945 in Degerfors.  The birth date matches but not the name.  He was in the military so it’s possible that his name was changed.  Also, there is a word “predikant” next to his name.  I took this to be “minister”.   The death record shows him to be married, but I cannot find any marriage record.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sune,

Thanks for your help.  What is confusing is that I found a birth record in ancestry.com for Dorit that shows she is the daughter of Johan Karlsson and Maria Elisabeth Jansson.  I could not find this on riksarkivet as I did not see any records for 1921.  And I found a document of a report of birth of children borrn to American parents with those same people as Dorit's parents.  So I am thinking that the priest who recorded this had it wrong?  I am sending the links to the records I found:

Through the census records I found a listing for Anna Lisa Persdotter, born 1810, in Undenas.  When I look at the image, it brings up the 1880 census record: https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/Folk_816017-061.  I have gone to the household records for Hova, 1870-1884.  I didn't see a register so I found a register in the 1854-1870 and approximated where I would find Fagerlid.  I found it and went through all the pages but could not find this family.  I'm stuck as to where to go next.  The census record looks like they would be in Fagerlid, but it also lists Norra Wadsbo?  Any help would be appreciated.  Carol

I am trying to track Peter Andersson & Stina Jansdotter.  There is a note to the right of the last household record I have.  It looks like something happened in 1846.  Also there was a move to Boderna? in 1840, but I cannot find Boderna.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Carol

Thank you again.  I appreciate the information.

I have now found four children for Stina and Petter Andersson.  I think Jacob must have died at a young age as he does not appear in the household records at any time.  But there are three daughters.  I also believe that I found the record for Peter Carlsson's death in 1807.  Sometimes it just takes persistence to plow through the records.

Thank you so much for all your work.  I never would have found this information as it was so confusing.  Jan Andersson, Stina's father, was my 3rd great-grandfather.  I had found information on all the other children but could never find Stina.  The son Johannes was my 2nd great-grandfather.  I was unfamiliar with the häradsrätt and finally found it through Archives, but I did not see how to enter a name.  Also some of the numbers on the references are a little off.  For instance, reference number 4 shows up as Bild 28 / Soda 27 in riksarkivet.  Thanks again.  Carol

I am trying to track Stina Jansdotter, born 17 Aug 1778, in Bremon, Ramsnas, Finnerodja.  Parents were Jan Andersson and Britta Olofsdotter.  The last record that I can find is a household record from Korterud.  I cannot tell where she moved after that.  It looks like she moved in 1803 to Bre???sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0050089_00116

Klas, Kalle:

Thank you for your help.  His birth is July 15, 1828.  He is the son of Lars Eriksson, 1 Jan 1780, Hagghult, Hova, who was my 2nd great-granduncle.  The last record where I could find him was:

https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0050750_00078

It looks like he is married to Eva Stina Gustafsdotter who must have died if he is listed as a widower.

I believe this is the correct Carl Larsson but I will see if I can work backwards from the record listed him in Lyrestad.

I have found a cousin, Carl Larsson, born 14 Jul 1828, in Hova in the 1890 census.  It shows him as a widower living in Norra Vadsbo but I cannot find any household records for that location.  Where would I look to verify that this is the right Carl Larsson?  Carol

I am tracing Anna Catrina Larsdotter, born in Hova 10 Nov 1810 and her daughter, Johanna Sophia Svensdotter, born in Nysund 18 May 1841.  The last record for Anna that I can find shows her going to Nybok?  The closest I can find is Nyback in Nysund, but I do not see her there.  And the last record for Johanna shows her moving from Hederna to Marie?? but I don't see anyplace like that.  The records are attached and can be found at:

Thanks again.  I don't see any close relatives who came over.  I did find a "Ann S Johansdotter", age 26 who left from Liverpool, England, and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 27 Nov 1871; but I don't think that is Anna.  It is actually easier to track ancestors in Sweden than it is once they emigrate.

Thank you for all your help.  Yes, I have used the census records.  I could not find Elin or her 3 sisters.  Most of my ancestors are not from Stockholm but from Skane, Vastra Gotaland, Jonkoping, Vasternorrland.  My mother was born in Ljustorp and my father's father was born in Hova.  So I have many Swedish ancestors.  I can usually follow the household records until someone moves to Stockholm.  Then it is difficult to track them if you don't know the parish.  For example, Elin's sister Marta Lena Johannesdotter (born 13 Dec 1840) apparently moved to Stockholm on 28 Aug 1870.  I cannot find her after that.  The last reference is from a household record for her father Johannes Danelsson. https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0023630_00339.  I would appreciate your help in finding her.  Thank you so much.  Carol

Thank you so much.  I believe there must have been an error - or someone who can't do math.  I suspect that it should have read only two daughters as there were 3 but one died as a baby.  But now I know that the first child, Anders, died before his mother.  I just was not able to ever find a record.  There are a lot of items listed in the estate so I imagine Jan was not a poor man.  Thanks again for your help.  I really wish my mother had taught me Swedish.  It would be so helpful in looking at my family tree as I have Swedish ancestors on both sides of my family.  Carol

Thanks to both of you for the information.  What is the purpose of the evaluation?  Is this for tax reasons?  Is it a law to value someone's estate when they die?  Would there be tax records?   There is also an estate for my 3rd great-grandmother, Britta Olofsdotter, Jan Andersson's wife.  Could you tell me how many sons and daughters there were at her death?  There were 5 sons originally, and I am trying to find out which one had died.  Also there were 3 daughters originally, but one died as a baby.  So I may be missing one of the daughters in my records.  Thanks, Carol

My 3rd great-grandfather, Jan Andersson died 3 Apr 1831.  It appears that his son Erik Jansson was the executor??? of his will.  Catharina Jansdotter is also mentioned; however, I'm not sure if this is Erik's wife or Jan's daughter.  There was a daughter named Cathrina, but I have her in my records as dying as a baby.  However, Erik was married to Anna Katarina Jansdotter.   So I'm not sure what the estate says. Both sign their names at the end of the document.  Here is the link:

Jan Andersson (25 Jul 1747) Bremon, Ramsnäs, Finnerödja is my 3rd great-grandfather.  He had 8 children.  I have been able to trace 4 of them but am finding it difficult to trace the other four:
Anders (20 Aug 1777), Stina (14 Aug 1778), Olof (10 Apr 1785) and Jacob (8 Jul 1787).  Maybe Anders died at an early age as I cannot find anything on him.  I did find a record for Stina in Korterud, sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0050089_00116, but did not see her past 1809.  There is a reference for Olof that he left Bremon in 1805 but I cannot read the name of the place, sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0050089_00107.  I looked in the Moving Out records but don’t see him in that year.  I also found a record for Jacob that says that he left Bremon in 1810 for Askersund, but I don’t see any records for Moving In to that parish for that year.  Are there other records that would help me trace these ancestors?  And I don’t want to look through the entire household records for Askersund, which I started doing but gave up on after many pages.  Thanks for any help and/or suggestions. I have conflicting dates of death for Josefina Amalia Eriksdotter, born 27 Jan 1866, in Fredsberg; father Erik Eriksson; mother Maria Larsdotter.  I have traced her through rikvarset, which has her moving into an old age home in 1917. To the far right of this record, it looks like she died 28 Feb 1932.  However, I could not find her in the death records for that year.  Ancestry has a death record of 27 May 1845.  I have attached the two records.  Thanks for any help.  Carol

Jörgen and Andreas,

Thank you both for all the information.  I had suspected that it was the Swedish church that did not recognize the marriage or the children as I looked at the birth records for the children, and it showed that the father was listed but that the children were "unbaptized".  I love this website as I learn so much from the participants.  Thanks again, Carol

I wonder if the word that looks like "sarbslag" means that he caught some illness in 1851.  I looked at death records for that year and did not find his name.  i bought a Swedish-English dictionary, and the closest I can come to any meaning is that slag might mean he had a stroke??

Wow!  Thanks so much for all the information.  I found it very interesting.  I really appreciate all your work in explaining all of this.  Good to know they weren't extremely poor, although they probably shouldn't have had to pay much tax.  I know that on Ingrid's husband's death record, it says "Fattighjon", which I was told means pauper.  The U.S. also had a tax on windows early on. The number of windows was used to estimate the value of the house.  Thanks again.  Carol

I am attaching a screen shot of a church record from Hova.  The record is under Hungstorp.  This is the Jan Larsson family.  I have the names and dates of birth, but I cannot read or interpret some of the items.  I believe that the 1801 means that the family moved from Finnerodja in 1801.  I see that Jan died in 1815 but cannot read what it says beside that.  Also, what does it say by Johannes (1790) and Anders (1794).  I think Jan is my 3rd great-grandfather; however I have had a hard time verifying this as I can't seem to track the family in the household records.  My 2nd great-grandmother was Ingrid Jansdotter (11 Nov 1783), but I have never been able to find a household record with Ingrid listed.  I did find a moving out record for an Ingrid Jansdotter in 1800 from Finnerodjato Backen but cannot find a household record in either place for her.  Any help would be appreciated.  I think this is the correct Jan Larsson (1753) but there are several others and some of the trees on ancestry have different names and dates.

Thank you so much.  I am sure that this is Anders Olofsson.  I looked at birth records for Hofva and there is only one Anders born on that day.  His brother, Johan, my great-grandfather also changed his name from Olofsson to Hagg.  However, he became a soldier so I can understand the name change in his case.  I don't know why Anders would change his name.  This practice makes it difficult to trace the family tree.  I believe that my 2nd great-grandfather on my mother's side must have changed his name also as I have looked for his parents for years now and cannot find them.  He was Petter Sjoholm but I don't see Sjoholms before him.  In any case, thanks again.  I'm not sure the sequence of Anders' moves as I have a "Moving Out" record for him from Langebro to Stockholm in 1840.  So I guess he moved there for work as a servant in someone's home???  I found the record you referenced in Harsosand, which is interesting as my mother came from that area; but Anders is related to me on my father's side and moved quite a distance for those times.  Thanks, Carol

They had four children, Hanna, Kjersti, Petronella, and Nils Peter, my great-grandfather who emigrated.  I found a marriage record of 12 Aug 1820 in Ivetofta, Kristianstads, Sweden.  I also found a death record in the same place of 5 Mar 1845.  And I found a household record listing him with a birth year but no month or day.  It looks like he was born in Waa (or would this be Va).  The place name at the top left of the page reads Raby and something unreadable after that.  This was in the household records file for Ivetofta, 1832-1840.  (Image 162 of 449), page 296.  I have searched everywhere for his birthdate and parents but cannot find them.  Thank you so much for any help you can give.  As we are stuck inside our homes, I have gotten back to my family tree as a pastime.

An interesting fact is that my mother and her family did not come through Ellis Island but rather went through Canada and traveled from Michigan.  I found the passenger ship and manifest for them.  So not all emigrants came through Ellis Island.

When we were in Sweden in 2009, we went to the House of Emigrants in Vaxjo.  It was quite interesting.

I remembered that I used to be able to get online and look at Jonkoping parishes.  I am attaching one that I downloaded in 2010 for my grandmother.  Would this be similar to what I would get with the CD?  I'm assuming that you can no longer get this information for free.  But it would be helpful if this information were in the same format as you can read it.

I have found that I can find some of the church records by going to other people's family trees and looking at their church records, which I can copy to my family tree.  However some of the handwriting is very hard to decipher.

Also, are any records kept on immigrants to the United States and would they be updated even after people have left Sweden.  My great-grandfather on my mother's father's side came here in 1893.  I can find no record of his death anywhere, and I have looked every place I can think of.

Have you ever been to the United States?  Iowa and South Dakota are fine states but not as beautiful as Washington state, where we live.

Klas,

You are most kind.  I appreciate your help and don't want to make a nuisance of myself, but your last post has caused me to ask some more questions.

First, can I buy the CD that you mentioned and where do I get it?  I must have many relatives in the Jonkoping area as my father's mother (Amanda Jonsson) was born there.  My father's father was born in Hova.  They both emigrated to the US where they met and married.

My great grandfather on my father's father's side was also a soldier.  His name was Johannes Olofsson, which he changed to Johannes Hagg.  I was told that the army wanted the names to be short and simple, so that is why he changed his name.  Is that why Erik Gustav dropped the Hakansson?  I was surprised when you mentioned this name as it is another new turn that makes it difficult to trace.  But you have supplied me with some more names for my tree.

Where do you live?  My mother was born in Ljustorp in Vasternorrlands.  My husband and I visited there last year, and I met a number of my cousins.  I have done a lot of work on my mother's side, so now I am working on my father's side.

Again, thanks for your help.

Again, thank you so much for all your help.  It can be very confusing trying to sort out all the records.  Sorry for the misunderstanding with the names.  I think it is very sensible that the Swedes stopped using the ways of naming children.  It makes it difficult to trace family trees.  Maybe I should try Arkiv Digital as ancestry.com is somewhat limited.  I have a lot of ancestors in Sweden as my mother was born there and my father's parents were also.  Thank you.  Carol

Thank you.  I did find Jonas Jonsson (Johannison) where you said.  I am looking for his parents.  Is there a way that he is linked back to them?  I also found him at 363 with several numbers and parishes??listed.  I think this means he moved here in 1857, but I'm not sure.  Klas said he found "Johannes Danielsson and his wife Kajsa Gustafsdotter who are the parents in Åker. He seems to be a crofter there."  But I did not find them in Byarum A1:19.  Thanks for your help.  I am trying to find them as there are several trees in ancestry.com that are wrong and list the wrong wife.  Carol

305
Klas,

I am sorry to trouble you again, but I have looked through the entire Byarum A1:19 household book and do not see Johannes Danielsson.  I thought maybe the numbers were wrong so I went through all pages.  Am I looking at the correct book?   Thanks, Carol

Yes, I see the pattern.  It makes tracing the family back more difficult.  And, of course, they had name changes within the family too.  I saw where there were four sons in one family, each with a different name.  My mother's father was Sjoholm.  When they came to the US, he changed it to Nason.  No one knew where this name came from, until I found out my great grandmother's name was Nassen in Sweden.  And my grandfather's brothers changed their names to Seaholm and Nelson.  I still haven't found all the information on them.  When I looked for my great grandfather, Nils Peter Sjoholm, who also came to the US, I can find him in several census - one time as Sjoholm and the next time as Nils P. Seaholm.  I have not been able to find his date of death or where he died.  Apparently he lost two wives in Sweden before coming here.  He returned for a visit to Sweden at the age of 88 - by himself.  Then he returned here, but I have lost him after that.

Thank you so much for your continuing help.  I don't have access to the AD OnLine.  I assume that this is the Arkiv Digital.  It is fairly expensive for me, and as we are already paying for the ancestry.com website, I did not join.
I am looking at a free website that I mentioned in my first posting, JBGF.  I found the record for Amanda's birth, but the records for Alma do not show up.  I double checked today to see if I had missed her, but she is not on that website.  Their records are probably not as complete as the AD OnLine.  They only have births, marriages, and deaths - no census records.
However, I was able to find my great grandmother's (Johanna Svensdoter) birth record in the Bondstorp parish.  As you had given her birth as 9 Aug 1834, I found the record which listed her parents as Sven Gustavsson and Brita Jonasdotter.  So I have more of my family tree now.
Thank you again for your wonderful research.
You also mentioned a Vivi Bryntesson who has done work in this area.  Is her work available online?

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  I really appreciate your help.
My family never knew that Amanda had a brother who remained in Sweden.  The mystery is that she had a sister named Clara who also came to the U.S., but we cannot find any records on her.  Amanda settled in Dallas, Texas, and married my grandfather, August Hagg, who was born in Hofva, Vastergotland.  I have found his parents and grandparents but could not find anything on Amanda.  She had 9 children and died at the age of 88.  My mother was also born in Sweden, and I have been able to trace back through her mother's side for many generations with the help of a relative who lives in Sweden.  Again, tack så mycket.

(jbgf.se/engindex).  After looking through all the parishes, I found her in Byarum parish.  Her father was listed as Jonas Johannesson and her mother was listed as Johanna Svensdotter.  I looked for earlier births from the same parents and found a son, Klas Gustav, born 11 Sep 1859.  My grandmother immigrated to the US in 1884.  We always spelled her name as Jonsson.  Not until I saw the birth record did I see it spelled differently.  There was also a sister who was called Clara, but I could find no record of her birth.  The only record I could find on my great grandfather was that he was born in 1830 and was married in 1859 in Byarum parish.  I can find nothing on my great grandmother or anything earlier on that side of my family.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
