Hej igen!

...  is the farmer 1/2 tax exempt [Peter] or the farm 1/2 tax exempt [Hållingstorp]?

The farm was of size 1/2 mantal, and on frälse (noble-owned, tax-exempt) land.

There were 3 main classes of land:

1. Skatte = farmer-owned, the farmer paid property tax.

2. Krono = land owned by the crown (government), the tenant farmer paid lease to the government.

3. Frälse  = noble-owned land, the tenant farmer paid lease to the owner, who didn't pay property tax.

I don't understand part of your message.

When was she born, where have you seen her?
What is (bastad AL: 1870-76 Married in 1834 (L)(Bastad poor cash).
Do you mean Båstad in Kristianstad county? Most of their records before 1870 were lost in a fire 1870-06-09.

I see a widow Petronalla Kruse born 1811-08-15, at number 48/49, in AD Båstad AI:1 (1870-1876) Bild 73 / sid 68 (AID: v98086.b73.s68, NAD: SE/LLA/13052).

She seems to live in the house of a son(?) sea-captain Niklas Gustaf Kruse born 1837-11-26. She moves 1885 to Göteborg, is in the moving-out list as number 9, 2 May 1885,
ship-officer's widow Petronela Kruse born Dahlgren(?), AD Båstad B:1 (1870-1894) Bild 50 (AID: v98089.b50, NAD: SE/LLA/13052).

Is this your petronell sofia kruse?

But according to Båstad-projektet she was married in 1834 to Lars Petter Kruse born 24 Nov 1808 Båstad, died 15 Mar 1854 Båstad.

Place-name: Annefors bruk, Kålars

Änka (widow), not anka (duck)!

1. Since both the widow Kerstin Jönsdotter and Sven Larsson were born in Småland, it seems reasonable to assume she is his mother, but could also be step-mother. Or not related...

2. Mor should mean mother of the head of household, that is Sven Larson... Perhaps his mother-in-law instead?
There is a Dala parish in Skaraborg county.

3. Småland is a province with 3 counties: Jönköping, Kronoberg, and Kalmar.

1. Bonde = farmer, not necessarily a farm-owner.

Hemmans-ägare = farm-owner

2. Arrendator = tenant farmer, he leased a farm.

Torpare = poor tenant farmer, crofter. He leased a small piece of a land on the properties of a larger farm, paying the rent by working a set number of days on the main farm.

3. Frälsefogde = a farm manager (bailiff, steward) on a noble-owned farm.

4. Sockenman = perhaps slightly different meanings at different times and places? But the basic meaning is man of the parish.

5. Dräng = the basic meaning is young man or a man in junior position. On a farm a farmhand, in industry perhaps a laborer or assistant to a craftsman. In marriage records it usually means bachelor, and a farmhand is often called tjänstedräng (employed farmhand).

Statdräng (or statare), farm worker (usually marrried) who received part of his pay in kind.

Stalldräng = dräng working in a stable, stable hand.

In the transition period between patronymics to inherited family names at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, some girls got the same surname as their brothers, for example all Sven's children used the surname Svensson, both boys and girls.

1. Apprenticeship, education, or...

2. The certificate was probably so he could take first communion.

3. The regular army was manned by the allotment system, where the (volunteer) soldiers lived in the soldier cottages spread around the parishes. Some regiments, artillery and life guards, were värvade (enrolled), with full-time paid soldiers.
The conscripts (beväringen) did two short training periods, and could then be mobilized as a reserve for the regular army if there was war. But here wasn't...

The Guard regiments had their own parishes in Stockholm.

I see moving-in number 82, 2 Nov 1875, Frans August Karlsson born 1856-06-17 Klockrike, coming from Wiby Östergötland, father's profession carpenter, recruit's profession shoe-worker, unmarried, moving to v.Rosen's company.

Translated from Swedish wikipedia:

In 1676 it was decided that the big böndagar (prayer days) would be four in number. They were celebrated then on Fridays, but from 1773 on Saturdays. For a time they switched between Saturdays and Sundays, and were after 1807 only held on Sundays.

Dates for the prayer days were set for one-year terms by the so-called böndagsplakatet (prayer day proclamation). During the period 1676-1807 the prayer days were distributed as follows:
- 1st prayer day occurred usually in March or April, but sometimes in May
- 2nd prayer day occurred usually in May or June, but sometimes in April
- 3rd prayer day occurred usually in June or July, but sometimes in August
- 4th prayer day occurred usually in August, September or October, but sometimes in November.

The four prayer days were:
1. Botdagen (repentance day?)
2. Reformationsdagen (Reformation Day)
3. Missionsdagen (Mission Day)
4. Tacksägelsedagen (Thanksgiving Day)

Of these, only Thanksgiving still has its own Sunday in the national Swedish church calendar.

Hemmadotter = daughter at home.

Is perhaps the m over-lined? That means it is double.

Piga usually means maid, but in some parishes, at some times, a daughter-at-home could also be called piga.

General questions / Absent without permission

People didn't actually need permission to leave, but they were supposed to report it to their parish office.

But for a conscript, I think the kasserad classification would be done before he started training.

It says her parents are deceased torpare Carl Jacob Jacobsson from Barkesved(?) and also deceased wife Christina Arvidsdotter. The brother(?) L.J. Carlsson of Östra Vingåker, and the guardian Peter Jonsson in Lugnet has given written consent to the marriage.

You could look for the father at Barkesved, I see a Carl Jacobsson born 1787 there in GID 410.15.78900, [Östergötland] Vist, AI.9 B, Household examination, 1846-1851, page 115, Image 121.

He had been widowed 1843-10-02, and is crossed out, but no death date or destination recorded.

The last recorded communion date was 16 may 1847, so he must have died or moved out later than that.

I see his son Gustaf Carlsson born 1834-07-02 at Barkesved in the next HFL, GID 410.18.24300,  [Östergötland] Vist, AI.10 B, Household examination, 1851-1859, page 113, Image 125.

He had come 1857 from Kärr(?), where he is found in GID 410.17.8200, [Östergötland] Vist,  AI.10 A, Household examination, 1851-1859, page 111, Image 82.

He had come from 128 2, which turns out to be GID 410.18.25800, [Östergötland] Vist, AI.10 B, Household examination, 1851-1859, page 128, Image 140.

But I cant read where he had come from it is crossed out.

Perhaps it is better readable in Arkiv Digital?

An adult Swede in early 19th century would definitely be expected to read, unless there was something really wrong with him. But he might not have been comfortable with writing with ink and goose-quill pen.

And even people who could write would sometimes sign with a sign rather than a signature.

If you look at the 1891-1895 HFL, the other men are younger and their titles are verkmästare, snickare, träskomakare, sadelmakare (manager, carpenter, clogs-maker, saddle-maker), all appropriate for a handicraft school.

But Lars Jakob Carlsson is f.d. rättare (former farm foreman) and the woman below him, born 1824, is f.d. tvätterska (former washer-woman).

So perhaps the estate had found two rooms in the school building where two retirees could live?

// Bo Johansson

41
They look like this in Swedsih Census 1880:

Carlsson, Lars Jakob
Rättare [farm foreman]
b. 1817 in Vist (Östergötlands län, Östergötland)
Man, married, father

Arvidsson, Christina
b. 1817 in Vist (Östergötlands län, Östergötland)
h. [wife]
Woman, married, mother

Claëstorp
Östra Vingåker (Södermanlands län, Södermanland)
------------------------------------------

// Bo Johansson

42
His title in the HFL is arbetskarl (worker) plus something more, he seems to have the same second title in the moving-out record.

Perhaps timmerkarl (lumber worker)?

// Bo Johansson

43
1) Lars Mattsson's title is possibly Husman (cottager).

2) I think his title is Husman (cottager).

Uthedesfolk i Kyrkbyn (uthedes people in Kyrkbyn), hörer till norra Roten (belongs to the north rote).

Uthedes means outside the village, but on the properties of the village, and uthedesfolk just lived there, they did not own the land.

3) Fördelstagaren means he received support in some manner.

BTW, the people on this page are utanvidsfolk, the same as uthedesfolk.

4) On line 28:  för äktenskas ledighets betyg till Hvitsand = free-to-marry certificate to Vitsand (Värmland county?).

His wife died 1887, and he moved 1892 to Vitsand.

5) number 2 born 1 Jan 1933 is Tore Villy Sixten (I think...).

One more 0 in the GID number: Landeryd marriages in GID 100005.36.45000, [Östergötland] _SCB Östergötlands, Marriages,Deaths, 1869, Image 56.

The last entry is actually not numbered, and is below marriage number 3, which is Gustaf Carlsson and Johanna Christina Johansdotter.

The couple in the un-numbered marriage are from Helsingborg and Dingtuna, the remark to the right tells that certificates have been sent to the pastors' offices in those parishes.

The reason that the first two and the last marriage on the page are not numbered is that the couples, or at least the brides, are not from this parish.

The remark below asserts that the records have been correctly copied.

1878-1888 Svinstad HFL: At the top of the page, middle of line 2, Gustaf Carlsson doesn't seem to have a remark. It looks like there are two remarks on line 2, but they don't seem to be about him.
Below Gustafs name is added his son Per born 1875 and daughter Margareta born 1878, and se nedan (see below).

And the remark on line 15 actually starts on line 14, so I suspect it isn't for Gustaf either, but for farmhand Carl August Johnsson at bottom of line 14.

I think you are correct, the family probably moved around with Gustaf, but where officially residents of Svinstad parish.

16. Enkm. (enkmeman = widower) Gust. Carlsson. He lives (or works?) at Harfvestad in Landeryd(??). Perhaps his father's name was written by error, and was corrected to his name.

17. Wife Christina Johansdotter. She died 1873-01-10, died (afled) and buried in Rappestad.

18. This son is hans i föreg. gifte (his in previous marriage), number 19 is presumably the same, number 20 is hennes i föreg. gifte (her in previous marriage), number 21 is med sednare maken (with the later husband).

Notice that number 21, son Fritz Leonard was born 2 months before the marriage.

Seems to be two marriages 29 Sep 1791, the second is:

Soldier And. Söderholm from Åker parish, and the maid at Öfra Skåttvång and this parish Maria Johansdotter.
This couple's banns were read in Gåsinge church, but the marriage in Åker parish. On the banns certificate (or banns fee?) ??? ??? ??? since the marriage was not done here.

It looks like this marriage is not numbered, presumably because it happened in Åker parish.

This is probably your soldier from the Central Soldiers Register:

Document number: SR-00-0946-1789
Söderholm, Anders
Born: 1768-08-29
Wife: Jansdotter Maria
  Born: 1772-06-16
Regiment: Södermanlands regemente
Company: GRIPSHOLMS
Parish: Åker
File: Sörby

The document number should mean he was soldier number 946, and was recruited 1789.

First banns date: 11 May 1845
Marriage date: 1 June 1845

Banns read the 11th, 18th and 25th May1845.

Marriage date(?): 29 Oct 1824
19 Sep were first banns read for bachelor Nils Andersson at St. Wretstorp and the maid at the same place Anna Stina Söderqvist. The maid's mother, female person Elisabeth Skagerling in Ekeby parish, gave written and legally(?) witnessed guardian's consent, also the maid's employer, the inn-keeper Sjösten at Wretstorp, with whom she for sevaral years been employed, [has] to this marriage given his consent.
His age: 23
Her age: 22

The mother and employer are mentioned because an unmarried woman needed her guardian's consent to marry, and I don't think an unmarried woman was a proper guardian.

The mother's title q.p. (qvinnsperson = female person) is often used about unmarried mothers.

I see Anna Stina Söderqvist born 1802-01-11 Almby, with husband and son, at Stora Vretstorp, in GID 2237.25.88600, [Närke och Värmland, Örebro] Viby, AI.7, Household examination, 1821-1825, page 244, Image 266.

But her birth is not found 1802 in GID 2323.20.16100, [Närke och Värmland, Örebro] Almby, C.2, Births, 1771-1861, Image 66.

Perhaps you can trace her backwards in the household records?

She had come 1821 from page 149 (GID 2237.25.78600) at Ybby.

She is at Ybby in the previous HFL, GID 2237.24.33300, [Närke och Värmland, Örebro] Viby, AI.6, Household examination, 1813-1821, page 130, Image 145.

She is at Stora Vretstorp (p. 368, GID 2237.24.57900), where she had come 1819 from Skagerhult...

On the 1864-1867 map Ålsta seems to be a small village, rather than a single farm:

In the 1880 HFL, Ålsta seems to be a small village with 4 farms. GID 395.11.62000, [Örebro] Hallsberg, AI.22, Household examination, 1876-1880, page 20, Image 24.

Ålsta ägor means the properties of Ålsta, and Johan Magnus Ohlman was a smith, so it makes sense that he lived in a cottage on the properties of the village.

Hej!

Sanfrid is a male name, and Harry is a male name in Sweden.

Plus, Sanfrid Harry is recorded as boy in the 1900 Swedish census:

In the orphange record from 21 May 1896, she is already called Ulla Hansdotter Hammarström.

The son's birth is recorded as Carl Axel born 1 May 1896, father unknown, mother Ulla Hansdotter Hammarström born 1870-02-29. In Gustaf Adolf births in GID 100002.25.61500, [Stockholm] _SCB Stockholms Stad, HIAA.1149, Births, 1896, Image 165.

She did not have to have any special reason to take the name Hammarström, before 1901 Swedes could (and did!) take a new surname whenever the wanted, they needed no more reason than liking the new name.

P.S: In the 1869-1876 HFL there is a remark about Nils born 1862: ej valt angifva barnet's far(?) (not chosen to state the child's father(?)).

Ther are also a remarks about Jöns Carlsson and Kjerstin Jönsdotter that they are baptists.

- wife Anna Larsdotter, born 1797-11-10 Onslunda, married 1830, died 1869-02-16.

No mention of Nils' father here either.

Below Kjerstin are 3 more children, an un-baptised boy born 1859-11-08, and un-baptised girls born 1861-09-22 and 1863-03-01. These have remarks that the parents have refused to have them baptised.

But these 3 extra children are connected with the family at the bottom of the page, not with Kjerstin Jönsdotter.

In the next HFL Kjerstin Jönsdotter with her father and illegitimate son Nils are recorded at Hjärsås number 5, she marries Nils Nilsson 1875-10-29 and has an un-baptised son Sven 1876-08-14, and her father dies 1871-04-06.

If Charlotta Svensson was 26 when emigrating in 1880, she would have been born about 1854.

There is a Charlotta born 16 nov 1854, parents Sven Månsson and Johanna Bengtsdotter of Wänneböke, in GID 829.23.39700, [Kronoberg] Hinneryd, CII.2, Births, 1854-1866, page 11, Image 12.

The family is found at Vänneböke Nordgård in GID 829.16.3600, [Kronoberg] Hinneryd, AI.11, Household examination, 1851-1856, page 244, Image 36.

- Sven Månsson, born 1803-07-14.
- wife Johanna Bengtsdotter, born 1812-12-25.
- 13 children born 1828-1854.

Then in GID 829.17.44900, [Kronoberg] Hinneryd, AI.12, Household examination, 1856-1860, page 256, Image 267.

This was the last real HFL for Hinneryd, much of the records were destroyed by fire 1893, but the family is found in the 1870 HFL census extraction, in GID 829.29.2600, [Kronoberg] Hinneryd, AI.13, Household examination, 1870-1870, Image 26:

- Sven Månsson, farmer, born 1803.
- Johanna Bengtsdotter, wife, born 1812.
- Carolina Svensdotter, daughter, born 1851.
- Charlotta Svensdotter, daughter, born 1854.

Charlotta is not found in Census 1880, making it reasonable to suspect she has emigrated (or died) before the end of 1880.

It looks like her mother has died, and her father remarried, they look like this in Swedish Census 1880:

Månsson, Sven
Undantag [retired and supported by the farm]
b. 1803 in Hinneryd (Kronobergs län, Småland)
Man, married, father

Persdotter, Lisa
b. 1808 in Traryd (Kronobergs län, Småland)
h. [wife]
Woman, married, mother

Vänneböke Norregård
Hinneryd (Kronobergs län, Småland)
--------------------

Perhaps this is your Charlotta, but then the information you have that her parents parents were Nels and Anna Svensen is not correct.

Sjunne Samuel Elofsson and his wife Hilma Ingeborg lived at Haraberga 3016, Knislinge in 1970, and Sjunne Samuel lived there in 1980.

I don't see that Oskar Albert born 1886 in Hjärsås in the Swedish Death Index 1901-2009, so perhaps he emigrated.

But the index is not complete before 1947, so he could have died in Sweden 1901-1946.

At least his sister Ester Beata and brother Sjunne Samuel died in Knislinge:

I looked at your HFL pages.

He was recorded as farmhand Jonas (illegitimate) born 1811 in Asa, at Stora Angseboda in GID 1082.11.28800, [Jönköping] Fröderyd, AI.10, Household examination, 1823-1830, page 99, Image 108.

He had come 1828 from Asa and moved 1829 to page 69 (GID 1082.11.25800) at Klef (modern Klev), where I think his surname looks more like NNson than Magnusson.

N.N. is Latin for unknown name.

He moves 1830 to Slageryd(?) page 118.

Slageryd is in Bäckaby parish, and he is found at Slageryd Svensgård in GID 1077.14.54600, [Jönköping] Bäckaby, AI.7, Household examination, 1823-1830, page 118, Image 129.

Then in GID 1077.15.71100, [Jönköping] Bäckaby, AI.8, Household examination, 1831-1840, 135, Image 142.

He is definitely called Jonas N.N.son here, and moves 1831 to Fröderyd page 125.

Next you have him again at Stora Angseboda in GID 1082.12.54400, [Jönköping]  Fröderyd,  AI.11, Household examination, 1831-1840, page 125, Image 132.

Here he is called Jonas Magnusson, came 1831 from Bäckaby, moved 1833 to Asa.

So he got the name Magnusson as he moved from Bäckaby to Fröderyd 1831 at age 20.

Perhaps he learned that his father's name really was Magnus. Or perhaps he felt he needed a surname and stole the name of his employer at Slageryd Svensgård, the church warden Magnus Jaensson?

// Bo Johansson

P.S. Jonas Magnusson is found with remark ofärdig (disabled) at Baggansås in GID 815.28.23900, [Kronoberg] Asa, AI.16, Household examination, 1875-1880, page 458, Image 239.

He is a widower, his wife Helena Christiansdotter died 1878.

100
Genline has household records from 1861 for Hjärsås, and he is found there at Hjärsås number 9 with parents and siblings, in GID 1661.10.46800, [Kristianstad] Hjärsås,  AI.3, Household examination, 1876-1885, page 77, Image 78.

Anders born 1857-08-16 is recorded as a sailor, and he emigrates 1885-03-10 to N.Amerika, at the same time as the brother Nils born 1866-06-07.

There is a remark that MIGHT mean that Anders was absent from his first conscript training in 1878, perhaps he was already a sailor then.

There is also something about not having a certificate covering Apr-Nov 1876, but that is about his brother Per, see the previous HFL GID 1661.9.18200, [Kristianstad] Hjärsås, AI.2, Household examination, 1869-1876, page 69, Image 72.

Hej Monika!

Unfortunately, most of the Hjärsås church books were destroyed in a fire 1895, so it will be difficult to check if Hilda's mother Kersti Jönsdotter born 1837-09-13 in Hjärsås and Alma's father Carl Jönsson born 1834-09-16 Hjärsås, are in fact siblings.

Carl Jönsson, Hanna Niklasdotter and children can be found at påarp in GID 1661.10.54000,  [Kristianstad] Hjärsås, AI.3, Household examination, 1876-1885, page 165, Image 150.

Carl Jönsson gets a certificate for America 1882-05-16, and is moved 1883-12-11 to page 382. Unfortunately that page (missing persons?) is missing in Genline.

125
GID 1661.5.3600, [Kristianstad] Hjärsås, AI.4, Household examination, 1886-1894, page 86, Image 36.

The father Nils Nilsson dies 1887-07-05, the son Sven moves 1894 to page 339, but Hilda and her mother do not move out, it is only Hilda's odöpt (un-baptised) after her name that is crossed out.

So Hilda is still there after 1894, but I don't see her in the 1900 Swedish Census, so perhaps she had emigrated.

This might be her emigration, from the EMIHAMN database on the Emigranten CD:

Jan Jansson Haglund with family is number 1 in the moving-out records for 1865, moving out 1 Jan to Förenta Staterna i Nord Amerkika from page 281 in the HFL. GID 477.15.67100,  [Värmland] Ekshärad, B.2, Moving in,Moving out, 1844-1872, Image 53.

The two most probable emigration ports for people from this area are Göteborg and Oslo (Kristiania).

The family came 1858 from page 142 (GID 477.19.7700) at Mjögsjöhögden under Hamra, where Jan Jansson Haglund is fältjägare number 2.

He and his wife Annika Larsdotter came 1855 from page 34, where Jan Jansson changed title from Dr. (farmhand) to Fältjägare and added the surname Haglund, and there is a note about their banns for marriage 30 Dec 1854. GID 477.11.95200, [Värmland] Ekshärad, AI.16A, Household examination, 1851-1856, page 34, Image 42.

Mårten Svensson, higher on the same page, has a remark that he claimed that he lived in marriage in baptist fashion with Kersti Nilsson.

Yes, the Gustaf Magnusson/Landin family had no maid 1876-1885.

The reason for the surname change is probably that Gustaf Magnusson thought that now that he was a professional man, he should have a non-patronymic surname, so he started calling himself Gustaf Landin.

Debbie wrote: [Elin] 12/24/1881 Born out of wedlock to Eva Eriksson, who is a maid for the Gustav Landin family in Amal, Sweden. Could Gustav Landin be the father?

The Gustaf Magnusson family (not yet using the Landin name) did not have a maid in GID 1964.34.65400, [Älvsborg] Åmål, AI.20, Household examination, 1881-1885, page 372, Image 339.

So Eva Eriksson was employed somewhere else in Åmål, went home to her birth parish Tveta to give birth in 1880, and moved to Göteborg 1883.

Signe Landin is in EMIHAMN, emigrating from Åmål via Göteborg 1909-10-15 to Boston, source code 90:311:89739.

On the ticket number before her is ELIN ERICSON age 29, from Stockholm to Boston, source code 90:311:89738.

Perhaps this is the sister.

And perhaps this is the Elin with birth recorded 24 Dec 1880 in Åmål, but born in Tveta, illegitimate daughter of maid Eva Eriksdotter. GID 100015.10.62600, [Älvsborg] _scb Älvsborgs, Births, 1880, Image 522.

This seems to be her in 1890:

Flicka, ensam i familjen [girl, alone]

Fattighjon o understödstagare [paupers]
Åmåls stadsförs (Älvsborgs län, Dalsland)

And in 1900:

Eriksdotter, Elin
Piga
b. 1880 in Tveta (Värmlands län, Värmland)
Girl

Fiskaren Större N:o 18
Katarina rote 13 (Stockholms stad, Uppland)
------------------------------------------

A check in the Åmål HFL shows that Elin was born 24 Dec 1880, and she is living in the home of Gustaf Magnusson Landin! The remark seems to say her mother maid Eva Eriksdotter moved 1883 to Göteborg, and the girl was auctioned to Gustaf Magnusson Landin. GID 1964.37.41600, [Älvsborg] Åmål, AI.22, Household examination, 1886-1890, page 113, Image 116.

So perhaps she was a half-sister, perhaps not, but she was at least a foster-sister to Signe.

Genline has death records for Torup up to 1937, unfortunately the March 1913 page seems to be missing (also Oct 1913).

In Swedish Census 1900 he seems to be called Johannes Jonsson:

Jonsson, Johannes
Hemmansägare [farm owner]
b. 1833 in Torup (Hallands län, Halland)
Man, married, father

Kristensdotter, Anna
b. 1837 in Torup (Hallands län, Halland)

s.

Säfsebo L:a
Färgaryd (Jönköpings län, Småland)
----------------------------------

Since they lived in 1900 in Färgaryd parish, Jönköping county, perhaps they died there too.

There is a Johannes Jonsson/Jönsson(?) died 25 Mar 1913, born 1833-09-22, cause old age weakness, in GID 1083.28.5600, [Jönköping, Halland] Färgaryd, SCB, Deaths, 1898-1920, Image 56.

Genline has death records also for Färgaryd up to 1937, so you can look for the others.

I don't see Julius born 1879 in Torup in the Swedish Death Index 1947-2006, perhaps he died before 1947, or emigrated.

The census 1900 has his birthplace as Vassända-Naglum, but he is not in the Vassända birth Mar 1840 either (GID 735.13.11700).

In Sweden before 1901 you could take any surname (except a noble name) at any time, and many people did.

The EMIHAMN database on the Emigranten 2001 CD has a MATILDA CH ENGSTRÖM emigrating alone via Göteborg 1869-05-21, home parish and county not stated, and age recorded as 0 (Source code 1:554:21234).

Could this be Mathilda Charlotta Nilsdotter, who got her moving-out certificate 1869-04-21 from Skede parish? In such case the age must be an error, but it seems VERY strange that someone less than one years old travels alone.

There was an Engström family from VINDA (Vireda parish?) emigrating the same day, destination NEW YORK (Source code 1:554:2258).

But a check in the HFL shows that this family did not have a daughter named Matilda Charlotta, they are found at soldier cottage number 46 under Släthög Sörgård in GID 1145.24.8400, [Jönköping] Vireda, AI.13, Household examination, 1866-1870, page 128,  Image 84.

I don't see Mathilda Charlotta's birth in Björkö 1849, so there is probably some error in the birth information. GID 1069.14.19200, [Jönköping] Björkö, B.1, Births, 1846-1859, pag 31, Image 20.

BTW, in the Skede household record at Rösa Lillegård she is called Thilda Charlotta Nilsdotter, born 29 Sep 1849 Björkö, GID 1130.19.16000, [Jönköping] Skede, AI.11, Household examination, 1866-1870, page 24, Image 29.

She is found in the Bäckseda moving-out records as number 44 of 1865, Thillda Nilsdotter moving from page 4 to Skede. GID 1075.25.2600, [Jönköping] Bäckseda, B.1, Moving in,Moving out, 1861-1870, page 41, Image 26.

Unfortunately Genline doesn't have Björkö moving-out records for 1864, and the 1862-1869 HFL seems to be missing half of the volume.

Perhaps she was born elsewhere, and then when she moved from Björkö, it was just assumed she had been born there.

P.S. The name Spångberg might be a military name, or a name a craftsman ancestor of Karl Fredrik had taken. Or perhaps Karl Fredrik's father had taken it just because he liked it.

Hej Christer!

Påhl Lustig Jonasson, f 1785 i Örkelljunga L län, vigd 1813 i Bjuv, M län, död 1856 i Västra Broby, L län.
Gift med Lusse Jönsdotter, f 1787 i Bjuv, M län, vigd 1813 i Bjuv, M län, död 1862 i Västra Broby, L län.

Barn:

NN Påhlsson, f 1815, död 1815 i Bjuv M län
Karna Pålsdotter,f 1816 i Bjuv, M län, död 1896 i Bjuv, M län
Elna Pålsdotter, f 1819 i Strövelstorp, L län
Anna Pålsdotter, f 1822 i Strövelstorp, L län
Olu Pålsson, f 1825 i Strövelstorp, L län, d 1825
Johannes Påhlsson, f 1826 i Strövelstorp, L län, vigd 1887 i Rebbelberga, L län, d 1897 i Ängelholm, L län
Gustaf Lustig Lundegren, f 1829 i Björnekulla, L län, vigd 1865 i Bjuv M län, d 1894 i Helsingborg, M län.

Människor / Yngre män i Gamlebytrakten under 1920-talet
« skrivet: 2010-02-14, 15:03 »

Sometimes the upplöst hjonelag or similar remark had nothing to do with divorce, instead it showed that the person was married, and that marriage was now dissolved by this death.

This seems to be the case in this death book in this parish, I checked the deaths 1800, and there were far too many upplöst hjonelag for them to be cases of divorced people. GID 1051.31.77400, [Skaraborg] Odensåker, C.3, Marriages,Deaths, 1786-1838, page 199, Image 107.

Jensson or the female form Jensdotter are possible as Swedish surnames, although the Danish and Norwegian forms Jensen/Jenssen/Jensdatter are much more common.

But Jenson could also have been an Americanisation of the common Swedish names Jonsson, Jönsson, Johansson, etc (or Jonsdotter, Jönsdotter, Johansdotter, etc.).

Another complication is that she might have been known in Sweden as Jenny(?) XXXsdotter, daughter of XXX Jensson (or Jonsson, Jönsson, etc.), where XXX is her father's unknown first name.

The Swedish cencus 1890 has 6 girls named Jenny/Jenni with a father named Jens or with surname Jensen/Jenssen, and also 6 girls named Jensine/Jensina with a father named Jens.

Since there should not be more than one soldier with the same surname in a company, this is probably the same man. Perhaps the name confusion Nils/Hans comes from the man being named Nils Hansson Bargren? If that is the name in the 1728 marriage record...

It is difficult to read, and I don't think birthplaces are recorded, the column after birthdate is came from.

The easiest first: the brother Eric Larsson moves to Hvalfallagrufva, and there is a Valfallagruvan in Floda parish. (gruva = mine)

Anna Larsdotter (sister?) perhaps came from the same place Hv.Grufv., and she moves to Slättfall (in Floda parish?).

The girl Catharina Pehrsdotter came from Hofmanstorp (in Floda parish?) and moves to fattigstugan (the poor-house).

The servant girl Ingebor came from Sköldinge (Sköldinge parish?), and perhaps moves to Sköldinge.

But Lars Larsson's (with family?) destination and where his wife came from is difficult, but probably the same place...

Hej Eva!

Some local geneological societies have some tax and court records available online, for example Tjörns Släktforskare http://www.tjsf.org/

And I believe Arkiv Digital has court records, military records, tax records for some counties http://arkivdigital.se/

Linköp.län (Linköpings län) is a variant name for Östergötland county and Nyköp.län (Nyköpings län) is a variant name for Södermanland county.

Named so because of the county capitals.

This was obviously written by someone who was not comfortable with writing. The word choice and sentences are a bit strange, and the spelling is very inventive.

Beloved(?) son(?) I may ??? thank you for your arrived letter that I have received from you(.) I thought I should have answered the first one (or answered it soon??) but then I thought to wait a little(.) I hear that you all are in health and will live which gladdens me to hear(.) I also am in health which I have much to thank God for(.) Well now I have to tell you that I now have had auction yesterday on the farm(.) It was sold for 5000 (or 5900?) kronor so the investment I(?) should have myself...

I don't understand the last part of the letter, it seems the writer will keep about 900 kronor.

Probably vapenöfvat 2 ggr (weapons trained twice), that is he had done the two periods of military training that was usual for conscripts.

So he was probably not in the regular army, but in the reserves.

The first two have titles flicka (girl) and gosse (boy), that is they are too young to be piga and dräng.

The third MAY be inh. (inhyses = lodger).

It looks like the girl Anna moved to Örebro, the boy ??? came 1756, and the last one Nils came 1759.

Lantmäteriet's mapserach page has no Näset in Karlskrona town, but there are 5 Näset in the modern Karlskrona municipality (kommun). The closest sems to be Näset on Hässlö (Hässlö parish)

 http://www2.lantmateriet.se/ksos_eng/visaortnamn.jsp?id=2886868

But perhaps there were once more places named Näset...
