According to HowardâEUR(TM)s WWI draft registration card he was born 21 May 1889 in McKeesport and is married with two children in 1917.

In 1930, Hilda is still living. She is 62 and no longer working. Her son William is 20 years old and working as a clerk in a steel foundry.  Also living with her are her three daughters.  All are shown as widowed.  Hildegard has a 10 year old daughter, Alice. HildegardâEUR(TM)s married name might be Walters but I find it difficult to read.  Esther is 41 years old and working as a housekeeper for a private family.  Her son, Carl, is now 13 years old.  Living next door is Edith Surgeon and her two daughters Dorothy and Elvera.  Edith works as a housekeeper and Dorothy is a typist at a paper mill.

Hi Freda,

I did find the same passenger record on Ancestry for Beda Olivia and Valborg Margaret Tornbom.  They traveled on the Stavangerfjord and arrived in the port of New York on 20 December 1921. Beda was 25 years old at the time. Valborg was 17 years.  They were coming from “kunggt.5.Kristineholm” with the destination of Chicago.  It is noted that they are sisters.

In the 1920 Census, 614 Ewing Avenue, Ward 8, Cook County, Chicago, Illinois, there is this family that looks like it fits:

Turnbow, Fritz G.
Head of household
Age: 45
Immigration: 1905, un-naturalized citizen
Born in Sweden
Occupation: Steel worker

Turnbow, Anna E.
Relationship to head of household: wife

Joseph,

On Ancestry, there are 2 passenger lists with a Richard and Wilhelmina vom Lehn:

Ship:  SS Kungsholm
Sailing from New York, NY on 30th Jan 1935
Arriving at the Port of New York, NY on  18 Feb 1935
Line 22
Vom Lehn, Richard
age 58
married male
not born in the US
Naturalized citizen at Supreme Court, New York through father's papers
Address: 464 E. 24th Street, Brooklyn, NY
Line 23
Vom Lehn, Wilhelmina
age 52
married female
Born in Brooklyn, NY on 29 November 1882
Address: 464 E. 24th Street, Brooklyn, NY
______

Ship:  SS Carinthia
Sailing from Nassau on 19th Feb 1936
Arriving at the Port of New York, NY 21 Feb 1936
Line 17
Vom Lehn, Richard
Age: 59
married male
Naturalized through his father's papers of 1884
Address: 464 E. 24th Street, Brooklyn, NY

Line 18
Vom Lehn, Wilhelmina
age 30
married female
born in Brooklyn, NY on 29th November 1886
Address: 464 E. 24th Street, Brooklyn, NY

On both passenger lists, the column for birth date was specified for native born citizens and left blank for immigrants and naturalized citizens suggesting that Wilhelmina was born in Brooklyn as indicated.  I did notice though that her place of birth is given as Germany on the 1900 census. Perhaps you could find Richard's father's naturalization papers.  Depending on when he filed, they might tell where in Germany Richard's family came from.

Hej Pia!

I haven't been able to find the family in the census but I did find these two items:

Anton Welin registered for the draft in Benton County, Minnesota on September 12, 1918. He gives his address as 430 5th Avenue SE, Saint Cloud, MN and fodd 19 May 1876. He says his occupation is a paving cutter for the Granite city Granite Company in St. Cloud. He lives with his wife Hilda. He was described as tall, medium build, brown eyes and hair.

Both Anton and Hilda applied for and became naturalized citizens in Benton County, MN sometime between 1915-1920. (The date of their final papers in the index is listed as 1 Dec 1997 which can't be right!)

When I googled 'Lodge Ring of Svithiod in Chicago', I found that the The Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College has some of the lodges minutes and membership lists on microfilm under the link of Organizational and Lodge Records. The list of what they have organized by state is here:

The Cook County Assessor's Office has link where you can search properties by address and then see pictures of the buildings.  Unfortunately Elina's Drexel Blvd address isn't in the database and the witnessess Richmond address is now a vacant lot, but sometimes you get lucky! ;-)

Annika,

I've had the same difficulty as Karen. The closest I've found in the 1930 Census is:

4020 71st Street, Dwelling 73, Household 127, District 195, Queens, New York

Hasselquist, Edwin Head age 36, 31 years old when married, born in Sweden with both parents born in Sweden, came to the US in 1921, naturalized citizen working as a printer in a print shop.

Hasselquist, Signe wife, age 38, 32 years old when married, born in Sweden with both parents born in Sweden, immigrated in 1914, naturalized citizen, occupation none.

They have two children, Edwin, age 4 and 4 months born in New York; and Roy 2 months old.

Then, in the 1920 Census I found:
1441 Union Street, Dwelling 150, Family 403, District 1103, Brooklyn Assembly District 18, Kings County, New York

Nelson, Signe  25 years old, born in Sweden.  She is a servant in the household of Robert and Margaret Thedford.  Her year of immigration is unclear it could be 1914, but it could also say 1912.  In the index, the name was recorded as Wigne Nelson.

The Social Security Death Index had the following.
Edwin Hasselquist
Name: Edwin Hasselquist
Last Residence: 19460  Phoenixville, Chester, Pennsylvania, United States of America
Born: 18 Apr 1894
Died: Feb 1966

Kjell,

Try www.rootsweb.com.  The link for US Genweb Archives will take you state links which are then divided by counties.  The archives contain documents that people have transcribed and posted.  It can be hit or miss-some counties have lots of information, others none.  The link for state resources might lead to a library or archive that has free databases or give you ideas for contacts.  You also might post a query at www. genforum.com which is similar to this forum. Perhaps you'd find someone working on the same family.

Kjell,

In the 1880 census, Andrew's occupation is given as foreman in the salt works.  Joseph also works in the salt works. I haven't found them in the 1900 census yet.

Ingela,

Good suggestion and information!  I hadn't looked for the father, Per Andersson, since until recently I wasn't even positive of his name. The note image with “Undan” comes from the Genline image 1250.113.55500. I don't have a death record for him. I'll have to see if I can trace him after this point in the husförhör.

I appreciate the suggestions and the help.  The family is the husförhör 1890-1894 thus:

Hökare Per Andersson b: 27 April 1833 in Bjuv
H. Bothilda Persdotter b: 6 Feb 1836 in Bjuv
son Alfons Axel Andrea 2 Oct 65 in Bjuv
dotter Hilda Sophia 13 Jan 1872 in Helsingborg

Bothilda and her son Alfons came to America together.  I did find Alfons in what was referred to as the Register of People  leaving Malmöhus län in 1892, as well as his brother Axel Bonde Anderson (b: 27 Feb 1869) who left Sweden in 1888.  I haven't found an emigration record for the sister Hilda.  I know she came since she is in a picture taken in Illinois, but she either returned to Sweden or died.  Bothilda and Alfons are both listed on the manifest of the ship Norge arriving 29th of May 1892 in New York.

Imagine my surprise! Per was alive enough to give his consent for his wife to leave. That's a good lead.  What years are covered by the Death CD? Could someone look up Per Andersson?

Regards (and smiles)
Laura

Svante Blomquist--He's not quite the right age for your Sven, Barbo...but there are mistakes and not everybody ended up at their stated destination. :-) Bo, I puzzled over your post with my swedish dictionary and thought you might also be looking for a Svante Blomquist

Albert S. son, age 23 born in New York, occupation carpenter

Also in the household:
Anderson, Walfrid Nephew age 19 born in Sweden, occupation stock clerk

Hey!

I think I found Emma! I wasn't having any luck searching on Svard.   I tried searches in the census on Albert with keywords Bayfield and Washburn with no surname.  Then, I looked only at the hits that had  *gren since you had that as part of the last name.  I'm guessing that came from Agnes' Ellis Island manifest (I couldn't read it either!)  In the 1930 census, I found:

In Bayfield County, Washburn, District 30
Halgren, Albert age 63, head of household, born in Sweden, both parents born in Sweden.      He is a merchant with a grocery store and he emigrated in 1891.
Emma age 50 wife born in Sweden, both parents born in Sweden She emigrated in 1901 and was 26 years old when married.

So, then I looked in the 1920 census and there was:

Bayfield County, Washburn
Halgren, Albert age 52 born 1889 occupation: grocery store
Emma age 41 born 1898

It seems to fit with information you have:place, birth year, emigration year, part of the surname, brother-in-law Albert. I'd feel more certain if I could find Agnes with them. However, she arrived between censuses and in the four years between her arrival in 1916 and the census in 1920, she could have married or moved.  The 1910 and 1900 censuses are not indexed on-line so I'm slower paging through those.

The town of Washburn is in Bayfield County, Wisconsin.  Ashland is in Ashland County and they are neighboring counties.  Both sit on a small peninsula that juts into Lake Superior near the Apostle Islands (good kayaking!) It's a beautiful area-wooded and hilly. They get a good amount of snow being at the base of the lake.

Hi Barbro,

What lovely pictures!  I think I'd say daughters as well.   I thought perhaps it was an older daughter that had already left home at the time of the 1920 census.  However, I found the family in the 1910 census and there isn't another living daughter.  Perhaps Maria had a child after Lars that for whatever reason isn't listed in the 1930 census.

1910 Mellen Township, Menominee County, Michigan
Blomquist, Jonas   Head   age 39, married 9 years
Maria   Wife   age 29, married 9 years, mother of three children, two living
                  Maria   dau.     age 7
              Helmer ?  son      age 2

I tried to insert the image of the censuses into my reply with no luck. If you can help me with that, I'll post the images.

I did check the marriage date for Jon Emil and had written them correctly. My mistake of not reading closely enough.

As for Emma, Albert and Agnes: do you know if they were in the town of Washburn in Bayfield County  or somewhere in the county of Washburn?

Laura

Hi Carin,

Truth be told, I don't know that I could answer the same kind of numbering question if was asked about the US census.

Thank you for the dates and Anders' birth record. I knew Anders had been the teacher in Filborna. His daughter, Johanna, lived with my grandparents after her husband died. After Anders retired from teaching, he had some kind of business preparing documents for people. Older family members talked about their lovely penmanship.  I do have a rather entertaining letter Johanna wrote to her daughter explaining how to cook beans- bruna bönor.  There are some questions, I suppose, you can only ask your mother :-)

Laura

Carin,

You are a goddess! Can I ply you with baked good? Wash you car? Send small tokens of gratitude?  Thank you for your hard work!

Are you tell in what year that the documents were collected?  I am trying to make friends with genline but have a very slow internet connection.

One of the household examinations indicates that Maria moved from Filborna No.18 to No. 9. in 1849 when she married Anders. What do the numbers correspond to?

Thank you, again.
Laura

82
Hi Carin,

Thank you for the informaiton! I think it is highly probable that is my Maria.  The date and places are correct.  I don't know if there is any way to prove it.

Maria's death certificate was filled out by her granddaughter.  Both her Mother and Father are listed as Unknown.  Maria was living with her daughter, Ingrid, when she died. Ingrid died three weeks after her mother.

I did not know that Maria and Anders had two daughters named Johanna Maria's. The second Johanna Marie died 30 Apr 1954 in Oak Park, IL (near Chicago).

Are you connected with this family? I have some details of Anders and Maria's children, obits and the like,  if you're interested.

Regards,
Laura B.

83
Dear Judy,

Thank you so much for your help! The 1890 census record confirms what I had been thinking.  Alfons and his brother's death certificates differ on the names they give for their parents.  The brother's death certificate says the father was named P. Aderson and the mother Battila Pearson. The census and birth record make me think that the brother's death certificate is more accurate than Alfons's. It'll sure help to have one name to search with rather than all of the possible combinations I've been trying! :-) What a big help!

Thanks!
Laura

Hi,

I am looking for information about Bothilda Anderson and her husband Peter.  Bothilda was born 6 Feb 1835 in Helsingborg and died 4 Mar 1919 in Chicago, IL.  Bothilda came to the US from Helsingborg with her son Alfons Axel Anderson Bonde(b:10 Mar 1865) in 1892 according to his naturalization papers. Bothilda's other son Axel Anderson Bonde (b:1868), a watchmaker, emmigrated to the US about 1888.  There was also a daughter Hilda for whom I have no information.

Peter, according to family stories, was born about 1833 in Helsingborg and died about 1877 in Sweden. I don't know if Peter's surname was Bonde. The only documented reference I have of Peter is from Chicago City Directories which list Bothilda, widow of Peter. The sons appear in US records both as Alfons Anderson, Alfons Bonde and Alfons Anderson Bonde.

Regards,
Laura B.
