What's the best English translation of the phrase "borgare av ringaste förmögenhet," found in a marriage record in Skara in 1791.

General questions / Hangelösa death, 1749

This cause of death is vexing me.  I feel sure someone here can figure it out.

About three years ago I posted an item from the Lerdala husförhörslängder that defied my transcription skills. It had to do with five orphans, including my ancestor, and where they were sent after their father’s death in 1790.

I sat down with it again last week and was finally able to make sense of it. Now I've been able to trace the lives of all the children but one. Her name was Maria Pehrsdotter (or Pettersdotter), born 31 Jan 1784 in Lerdala (annex to Berg). After she was orphaned at age six she was sent to live at the nearby manor, Sparresäter, where she was listed as a flicka (not dotter or piga) in the family of Friherrinna Metta Reenstierna.

In the next HFL, Maria was recorded as moving to Åsarp socken in 1798. At the top of the page, attached to the name of the baroness’s niece Gustava Ulrika Karlström, a similar notation is found.

So Maria traveled to Åsarp with Gustava. Also along for the ride was Gustava’s new husband, the young assistant pastor Johan Wilhelm Lund(e)berg.

The story doesn't end well, unfortunately. Elgenstierna recorded the details: Gustava Ulrika, född 1761-11-12 i Bergs socken, Skaraborgs län, död 1811-08-27. Gift 1797-12-19 Sparresäter med s. m. adjunkten Johan Vilhelm Lundeberg, född 1762-12-03 dömdes 1812-02-11 till döden för sedelförfalskning.

My original question was: What happened to Maria Pehrsdotter? Where did Gustava end up? If Maria remained in Gustava's household she could have ended up anywhere. I haven’t been able to find out anything else going forward.

But now there is also some sexier stuff: Exactly how much currency did Johan Lundeberg have to forge to get the death penalty? Was he actually executed? Where and when? I don't know how to research this. Looking for clues and ideas. Thanks.

Discussions in English / Gield?
« skrivet: 2023-06-08, 04:11 »
Here are two snippets from page 103 of the marriage register from Våmb socken, 1732 and 1737.

The final word in each, after Falköping and Broddetorp, is "gield."

I assume the word is now spelled "gäld," but if so, what does it mean? I can't find anything in SAOB that seems to apply.

A few words have been puzzling me in Södra Rörum and Äspinge burial registers:

I feel like I should know what the brief notation at the end of this entry means. Most of the burials around this time have the same or similar notiation.

The middle word in the middle line.  What kind of sickness, you say?  Qvirande?

The third line:  bröstvärm[?] af ålderdoms svaghet. Varit[?] gift i monga

I can guess what "bröstvärm" might be, but can't find it in dictionaries.  "Varit" fits but I'm not sure. Could be "Vart" with the same meaning. And why is "gift" underlined? Nobody knows.

I would be grateful for help transcribing the preamble of this probate record of Sven Asmundsson and Anna Svensson, who died a few days apart in Mellby Parish (Skaraborgs län) in 1749.

I can pick out the names and many words, but the devil is in the details and I want to be accurate. Thank you for your help.

OK, this one might be a little more difficult.

Christian Hörquist was a husar representing Råga Hörstad in Asmundtorp socken (Skåne).
In most of the Asmundtorp clerical surveys in which Christian appears, his birth date is listed as 1/3 1784, with birth place "Halland". Just Halland.

However, in his very first appearance in the church books, in 1808-11, a notation in the right-hand column says "Wata[?] 1784. d: 1. Jan:"

Any thoughts on where this might be? Was he really from Halland?

I do not know Christian's patronymic, sadly.

General questions / Hemoster? in Skåne
« skrivet: 2022-08-17, 14:41 »
Any ideas what this locality might be? The record is from Stora Råby Parish in Skåne. The place name is transcribed as Hemoster on ArkivDigital, but I can't find anything that seems to fit.

Here is a nice obituary found in the burial record of Hanna Pehrsdotter in Södra Rörum, Dec 2 1802, page 218-19. I've worked out a lot of the words but could use some help. I imagine there could be some odd spellings or skånska words I'm not familiar with. Thanks very much.

Discussions in English / 1755 household inventory
« skrivet: 2020-12-01, 01:36 »
I'm new to posting — I hope two in a week is OK. The handwriting is easier to read on this one. I have a few words I cannot decipher, but mainly I have a question about what the text actually means.

Here is my reading of the text (? = letters in indecipherable words):

Åhr 1755 d: 13 Februarii uptecknades yrarlaten? stapen? estter?
MIN? afledne man Jon Rafvelsson i Kierret, uti närvaro
af dess ock? MINA? Barn tillsammans dottren, Britta Jons
riga MINA? Barn af förra giftet till städes
, mayar-
en nämndemannen Erick Helgesson i ivrig? samt
Soldaten Anders Moberg med sin hustru Estrin Jons
dotter ock Sven Andersson i Ingelstorp.

The words I typed in all caps sure look like "min" and "mina" but make no sense to me in the context of a bouppteckning preamble.

So, I need some help on the transcription, but I also have a question about the bold text:

It reads to me as if Maria was present at the inventory, but there was an additional person (Biurvall) representing Maria's interest regarding a child from a previous marriage, and another person (Helgeson) representing the remaining children of a previous marriage. But as long as Maria is alive, her children should not be heirs to the estate, so why would they need representation? I am obviously missing something here.

Thanks for your help.  SJ

Discussions in English / Lerdala orphans
« skrivet: 2020-11-25, 01:43 »
I'm a longtime reader reaching out for help for the first time.

I'm trying to crack this notation from Lerdala Parish, Skaraborgs län:

https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0051411_00020#?c=&m=&s=&cv=19&xywh=3222%2C3722%2C2659%2C1168

Stretching the image improved the legibility a little bit.

The backstory: Petter Andersson died, leaving five young children as orphans. I think the notation may be about their disposition.

I think the word at the end of the 2nd line is Wättlösa, the neighboring parish. It also appears in line 6.

Thanks for any advice you can give.
