Hej!

Människor / Yngre män i Gamlebytrakten under 1920-talet
« skrivet: 2010-02-14, 15:03 »

I am doing research on my Holmgren family.  I have traced back through Pål Holmgren (b. October 27, 1721 in Östra Ljungby) by parish birth records.  The birth record of Pål Holmgren show his father to be a Sohne Åkesson.  Sohne married Karina Bengtsdotter on December 16, 1716 in Östra Ljungby.  Records seem to stop there.  I am trying to understand if the surname change was a military name change and if anyone has information on Sohne Åkesson and his family.

Hello, I am looking for any relatives that may be living in Sweden. I believe August Carlson, born December 4, 1871, in Öslerud to Carl Persson and Lovisa Johannesdotter, stayed in Sweden.  He was the brother of my great grandmother, Sofia, who came to the USA.  In her obituary, it mentions a brother that was still living in Sweden in 1935.  Does anyone have any information that would help me find this out?  Thank you!

Hi,
I need help with translation of Marriage entry. GID 71.24.19700 Gåsinge, Södermanland C:2. page 405. The one I am looking at is on Sept 29 1791, No 8.
I think there are two marriages, but I am not sure. I am particulary interested in And Söderholm.
Thanks
Jenny

I would really appreciate some help with the following record:
Östergötland, Svinstad Husförhör 1873-1878 AI:19, 387.32.58000 page 141.
The family I am interested in begins on line #16.
>#16. Enka. Gustaf (?Carl Jakobsson) Carlsson. Previously this man has always been Gustaf (no middle name) Carlsson,
he was the son of Carl Jacobsson. Is it odd that he is listed here with this longer name?
>#17. His wife (Johanna) Christina Jöhansdotter. She died 10 JAN 1873. What is written under her name?
>#18. His son Carl Gustaf, from his first marriage.
>#19. His son Frans Adolph, also from his first marriage. What is written after his name?

>What is written in the comments column for this family?
I have determined from other sources that when Christina died, Gustaf took her body to Rappestad to be buried.  (355.28.22000, BI:4, page 151) She was born in Vist, as was he.  Any idea about why this was done? Would he have put the casket in a horse wagon and driven it there? How long would that have taken?
Also Carl (in 1874) and Frans (in 1876) went to live with/work for their uncle Carl Magnus Carlsson (their father's brother), and I have not been able to find their father, Gustaf Carlsson, anywhere after this Hfl.  Any ideas?

>Is the boy listed on line #20. part of this family?

I realize this is a lot of questions, any help at all would be very much appreciated.
Kathryn

I would very much appreciate help with reading and translating the written comments in this marriage record:

I am interested in the last entry, on September 19, for Gustaf Carlsson and Johanna Christina Johansdotter. There is something written below their names, and also on the far right-hand side of the page.

Thank you.

Can someone read the notes occupying the whole line on the right hand page in this HFL, please?

Skaraborg, Södra Kedum parish
HFL AI:4 1861-1874 page 134 line 22 for
Pehr Johan Johansson (abbreviated) Silander.

Genline GID 562.15.47300.

I am trying to find out where my family name Silander came from, and Pehr is the earliest user of the name. This record appears to have had Silander added later, perhaps following a visit to Järpås in 1863 or 1864, around the time of his first communion? I am guessing that these notes will give me a clue for further research - I hope!

I live in Edinburgh and will be visiting Sweden with my family to celebrate!! my 60th birthday in September, so my current research is to find good places to visit.

Many thanks.

There's been a discussion on this arena concerning how bonde or torpare etc should be translated for non-swedish use. It is meant for swedish genealogists - as the site of course mainly is - to find out their proper words to be used in British / American English translations.
My suggestion is somewhat a contrary. Non-swedish readers, though capable of reading these pages but having trouble with the special and often ancient words used here ore more often in the source text do have a need - in my opinion - of a handy glossary. We know the problem of how hard it is to keep explaining bonde for someone who is not familiar with the history of a northern, rather independent peasant, also knowing his rights and hence using them, compared with a british clown v.s. freeman, or with russian souls. And that the background is different in Danmark.
About topics like above I'd love see the glossary - somewhere here (here you are, dear editord!) within foreign users. - Suggestions?
And the contents... Oh what the swedes love discussing, just like the russians. Pelase take a tour around to see the central points of trouble.
After having been discussed thoroughly, I understand I'd be done in a few days, supposing the contributors agree in using their texts and the supremacy of an editor in charge.
Looking forward: southwestwards from my point.
Hello to everyone!

I've tried several geography searches and find two Landviken inlets in Sweden, but I've had no luck past that.  My great-grandmother listed in our American family bible that she was born den 10 Febarari 1867 Landiken Grangorde [the last word is smeared].  Her birth name was Albertina Skarp (I've found her on the ship roster when she emigrated, and she lists her father as Peter Johan Persson (b. 30 Nov. 1829, d. 1908) who later took the name of Skarp, and her mother as Christina Andersdotter (b. 2 Sept. 1832; d. March 1908) but gives no whereabouts for either.  Our family is being visited this summer by descendents of our only emigrant who didn't like it here and returned to Sweden: Susanna Skarp Larsson. I'd like to present more family history at our clan gathering in early July.  But I'm stuck on figuring out the parish, and the Swedes coming here don't have any better records than we do.
I would be grateful for any help in figuring out our Skarp geography.

In my searching I have come across a few ancestors that were listed as nybyggare. This, for me,was translated as settler.Would this be considered as homesteader in the US.The one that caught my attention was born in  Ostanmyra, married in Floda, and was nybyggare i Karlsänge. This was in the mid 1600's.Was this a practice during this period of time to settle open areas of the country?

My ancestor, Carl Ferm was a miner (hammarsmedsmastare) in Storfors Bruk in the 1800's.  I would like to find out what his life was like.  Was a hammarsmedsmastare affluent or middle class?  Where can I find information on the life of a miner in mid-19th century Sweden?   Thank you.

Archive - General questions / Malung records on Genline?
« skrivet: 2006-05-30, 00:36 »
Hello!
I have Victor Larsson and I live in California, USA.
My father was born in Västmanland.  I have been using Genline for a while now and I have come to a Catharina Halvartsdotter born 1758 in Malung (W).

She married Anders Larsson in Skinnskatteberg (U) and moved out.

I tried to find her in Malung but for some reason the records in Malung do not go back so far.  I was wondering if they are still no on Genline or if maybe the records were destroyed?

Hej,

I am looking for relatives of Anna Christina Hertzman Stenström.  Her father was Sven Hertzman in Heda in the year 1780.  She had three brothers Anders b. Nov. 30, 1822, Carl Johan b. May 17, 1826 and Sven Adolf b. Oct. 15, 1829.  I know that Carl moved to Lenus in 1841 but, I lost him there.  I also know that Anders married Gustafuva Andersdotter on April 26, 1846 in Linköping.  They had two daughters Ida Jenny Hildegard b. Jan. 4, 1847 and Augusta Amelia Albertina b. Aug. 24, 1850.  If anyone has any information on any of these people please contact me.

I am trying to find information about my Great Grandfather John Anderson Blomquist, born March 16, 1849th The graphic below possibly written by himself after he settled in Norway contains information that may describe where he was born (somewhere is Dalsland) and where he was confirmed. I have tried to understand what he wrote and look at maps of Dalsland to figure this out but have not been unsuccessful. Can someone please tell me what the note says and identify the names of the villages and church in the document?

Also my father believes John Anderson Blomquist may have been in the Swedish military before he settled in Norway in or before 1871st Where would I begin a search for Military and emigration records?

1883-1886 Östersun, Jämtland,  A1:11a; 2680.3.65500 or page 119/0
Line 1 - Jacobsson, Johan Alfred b: 1856 7/7  Malexander -    what I would like to know is what is the notation at the end of the line regarding where he left for in 1886.

Also,  there is no notation regarding him being married. If he is working on this farm as a labourer, but his wife is not with him at the time, shouldn't it still state that he is a married man?

I have not been able to find his immigration record to American yet.  Obviously still in Sweden in 1886, but in Canada by 1901 census there.

Thank you.

« skrivet: 2007-04-26, 21:11 »
I am trying to find if my 4th great-grandmother, Maja Pettersdotter, is the daughter of Petter Hagelund and Kajsa of Hallersboda. I found the family in the 1789 household rolls GID: 1763.52.42200. Question, what does it say before Petter Hagelund's name? GID: 1763.5.48600 and 1763.40.60600 has the parents still in Hallersboda. Can't translate the word before Petter's name again. I found Kaisa's death 10 Apr 1810 at 75 GID: 1763.19.49200, but haven't found Petter's as yet. I scanned 1807-1835 without seeing him. I know he was alive in 1806.
The reason I think Maja may be their daughter is on GID: 1763.19.15800 at the birth of Sven Andersson and wife Maja's son Ola, I see the name Kaisa from Hagelunds in Hallersboda. Kaisa was Maja's mother's name. Any help greatly appreciated. Karen

I have heard that graves are removed after 25 years if there is no one to care for them. That is probably why I could not find my great grandparents grave in Visby.  What does it mean by removed? Do they just take away the Headstone and let the grave stay, or do they actually bury someone else on top of the one in there. They don't actually take the body away do they?  This really has me curious.

I would appreciate any help with the translation of 514.12.58100  Narke och Varmland, Norra Rada births 1770-1797 - page 170, June 8/11, 1780, Per -- bottom right hand side.

What is Per's last name??  I notice that they always put the surname right after the first name -- e.g. above is Jona Svensson -- below is Karin Nilsdotter.  There is a name that looks like it starts with an Oa____.

And, since Anna wasn't married, would Per use whatever the Oa___ name is, Sven's last name or his mother's last name?

Is the father Sven Hindricksson - *__?___, from Uddleholm, with maiden Anna *__?__sdotter, from Nora Rada??  The next word* I cannot read, __?___ then Per Persson, N. Rada, Sone Eriksson, Tallhult, Marit Oldsdotter, N. Rada, *___?___, Britta Sonesdr, Tallhut.

Erik Andersson f. 1806 Landet

H. Anna Maja Jonsdotter f. 1813 10/3 Balinge

S. Carl f. 1836 8/11Landet

D. Johanna f. 1838 4/11 Landet

S. Johannes f. 1852 24/8 Landet

S. Erik f. 1855 27/4 Landet

S. August f. 1859 23/4 Landet

I have found quite a bit of information on them in the Household Examination Rolls. I know that Johannes & August came to the US in 1881, but I can't find their emigration records. Johannes is my direct line. I would be very interested in finding relatives still living in Sweden.

I also have some questions regarding the Household Examination Rolls:

1) Does Landet just mean they were born in the country or is it a place name?

2) On GID 1878.24.28500, Johannes Eriksson has a marriage date of 1872 17/8. I don't find any other record of him being married or a wife's name or anything. However, he is also on GID 778.25.32000 from 1871 3/11 to 1872 and it says something under the dates that I don't understand. Is it anything to do with his marriage?

3) On GID 1878.24.26700, in the marriage column for Erik Andersson it has 25/1871/1 and his wife (Anna Maja Jonsdotter) is no longer listed. Did she die and what does that date mean? She was still listed in the previous GID 1878.23.6000.

Thank you for any help or leads you can give me. I'm not sure where to go for help!

I can't find it on the map, so it is probably nothing larger than a farm or group of farms.

My GG-father and family lived in Malexander Ostergotland. They arrived in NY on the Baltic on May 17, 1888. His name is listed as C T Frey although I recently found out through the Swed Gen conference that his name at emigration was Carl Fredrik Freij (he was in the army). I want to check the emigration listing against the manifest names because the writing on the manifest is hard to decipher. The listing is
CT Frey b. abt 1854
Carl Frey b. abt. 1878
Elcie Frey b. abt 1872
Fred R Frey b. abt. 1848 (I believe this is Frederika Charlotte Frey)
John Frey b. abt. 1884
Olida Freay b. abt. 1879
Rustina Frey b. abt 1881
They may have traveled on a separate ticket.
I would also like some help on how to find records on Frederika. She was apparently married before. I subscribed to Genline and have found Carl's family but the Malexander records are apparently missing from about 1860-91.
Any help would be appreciated.

I was wondering if anyone could explain some remarks from the household records to me?  On page 559 in Stora Tenhojden, Treskog, Varmland, (GID 488.20.7490 1851-1855) Jacob Jonsson is the first entry on the page born in 92.  There is a word that looks kind of like fattighjon and a date.  Then again on page 567 also in Stora Tenhojden (GID 488.54.3700 1856-1860) I think that same word is written in regards to the father, Jacob Jonsson, and the youngest daughter, Marta.  Does this word refer to being paupers or something like that?

Any help would be wonderful!

Thanks,
Heather Shepard

This is my grandmother's grandfather (farmor's farfar).  Our family records show that he was born in Jonkoping to Carl Johansson, but does not show a mother.  They also note that he was the foster  son of Gustaf Hakanson and Emilia Abrahamsdotter.  He served in the Swedish Military between 1889-1891.   He emigrated in June 1891.

If it is any help, is wife was Helga Maria Johannesdotter Petterson, b. 7 Apr 1869 in Bogla, Roberga Socken, Smaland or Thenhult.  She emigrated in Oct. 1891. Daughter of Johannes and Maja Stina (Johannesdotter) Petterson.  And that is where it stops.

Thank you for any help you can offer!  I am unsure how to trace this and confirm someone being a foster son...

I have been studying the seven children of Lars Magnus Eriksson (b: July 1823 in Ånimskog) and Kristina Eriksdotter (b: June 1823 in Skållerud. All of their children emigrated from Ånimskog parish between 1881-1883, settling first in Michigan. I have finally traced the oldest sibling, Walfred Larsson, born 6-Jan. 1854 in Ånimskog parish. He married Mathilda (?) from Ånimskog, in 1882 in Michigan.  (U.S.sources give her maiden name as Carlsdotter or Jonsdotter & give her mother's name as Johanna Jacobsdotter)  According to U.S. sources, Eric Magnus Larsson and Mathilda (?) had their first child out-of-wedlock in Ånimskog parish, WALFRED LARSSON, born 18-Oct. 1881.
Can anyone find this birth registered in the Ånimskog parish record?  It looks like Eric Magnus Larsson emigrated in 1881, settled in Alcona county, Michigan as a farmer, then brought Mathilda and their son, Walfred, to Spruce, Michigan, where they were married in Dec. 1882.  Eric Magnus and Mathilda had eight more children after their emigration.

I am looking for information about the Olsson family from Västra because I have received old photos of those people.  They were related to my ancestors through marriage, and I was curious as to the dates of their birth and the names of those in the family.
Lars Olsson was born August 27, 1864 in Västra, Vingåke parish.  I am sure that there were a number of children in his family, and the letters that I have inherited talk about these relatives.  They are related to the Ahlgrens (my ancestors) because Lars Olsson married Karolina Ahlgren in Nov. 1891 in Stockholm, where Lars worked as a slaughterhouse worker.  I have photos that show Lars' siblings and his parents, and I'd like to know their names - if possible.  Thank you in advance for any information that you can give me about this family.

I am trying to find out about my great-grandmother who was born in Kladesholmen in Goteborg och Bohus on June 17, 1864.  Her first name was Augusta and I'm not sure of the Swedish spelling of her last name.  When she came to the US, she was called Polson.  She probably came to the US sometime between 1882-1892.

I hope someone out there will be able to help me.

Thank you.

Hello,
Are there records of persons arriving in Sweden from North America between the years 1885 and 1897?  I am looking for Nils O. Hage who may have arrived at Götberg during that time.  He had emigrated to the USA in 1881, living there until at least 1885, and may have returned to Ny parish, Hungalsvik, Värmland, to care for his parents, Olof Jansson and Anna Ersdotter, or to settle their affairs when they passed away in 1897.  He left Sweden again in 1898, departing from Götberg.
Thank you,

Hi Siv,
Thank you so very much for your help. The numbering system in Linköping is actually much easier to follow than place names that are often difficult to decipher.
My family members seemed to move yearly. Can anyone tell me what the life of the average lower level worker - the drang and the pigan -  around 1850, was like? Were they likely working in some kind of factory? And was room and board provided? I'm trying to get a sense of why they moved so very much. I did find one widow who died in the Släden Fattighus, which I assume was a poorhouse. It is clear the life was terribly difficult.

Död i Polen före 1617.

G 1740/41 (kyrä) i S:t Nicolai m
fm Maria Olofsdotter, f ca 1711 i Äspnäs, S:t Nicolai, d 1781 2/7 i Mustorp, S:t Nicolai

ff f Per Ersson, d 1741 16/1 i Mustorp, S:t Nicolai, frälsebonde därstädes.
G 1:o m NN, bg 1716 14/2.
G 2:o ca 1717 m
ff m Catharina Henriksdotter, d 1737 23/4 i Mustorp, S:t Nicolai.
fm f Olof Andersson, f ca 1670, d 1755 19/5 i Närke, Tunaberg, bonde vid Äspnäs i S:t Nicolai.
G 1702 12/10 i Tunaberg m
fm m Elisabeth Persdotter, dp 1681 23/5 i L:a Torskhult, Tunaberg, d 1756 25/1 i Närke, Tunaberg.

Peder Andersson, Kalix

I am looking for the 1st husband of Anna who was Magnus Olsson (spelling).  He fathered Anna's child Ida Amanda Magnusdotter born April 19, 1865 in Dals-Ed. I don't know what happened to him (death or divorce).  I'm also trying to locate a place called Ravmarken.  I don't know where it's located.  I'm told that the birthplace of Anna Lisa.
