Hej Karin,
Thank you for your answer. Yes, it certainly could! In fact I was rather hoping that the word 'gestiller' would mean something like gesäller (gezellen in Dutch). I was not sure, as there is a 't' written in the word which I don't understand, so I thought maybe there is a Swedish word 'gestil'. But gesäll would fit in perfectly well in the context (of a house - annex 'fabriq'- full up with 'barn och gesäller', leaving no room for lodgers. Maybe the 't' was just a spelling mistake. It would not be the only one in the letter!

Hej igen,

Eric Floberg wrote some letters. In one of them he says that his house is too small to accomodate a lodger. He uses a word which I read as 'gestiller'. Can anyone make a Swedish word out of that? I can't!

Hej Eva,

Thank you very much for taking the trouble of going through the Stockholm registers!
For the Eric you found, the name is right, but not the birth date. And as 'my' Eric was very specific about his date of birth in the letter he wrote at the age of 58, I am afraid that 'your' Eric must have been a namesake.

Eric Floberg was married to Rebecca Wichgand, but this does not help for finding his parents or his birth.
I do not know whether he named (any of) his children after his parents, which was very common practice in Holland in those days (the first son after the paternal grandfather, the first daughter after one of the grandmothers, etc.) Eric's first two children were named after Rebecca's parents, number three and four were called Eric (or Ericus actually) and Bregetta. Also a Brigitta Vloberg was a witness at the christening of the eldest child in 1772, which might suggest that Eric's parents were called Eric and Brigitta (or Britta?). The following seven children had names that occurred in Rebecca's family. And judging by the online archival data in Holland, this Brigitta Vloberg seems to have come out of the blue and then vanished into thin air: I have found no other mentions of her.
Well, I think I can live with the idea that we'll never find Eric's origines  ;)
Thanks again, best regards,
Els

NB I am still wondering if you are in any way connected or related to Eric Floberg, as you had some genealogical data about him and his children very soon after I posted my question. What Dutch sources did you consult?

Thank you Eva and HG.

I don't know if Erik 'was born Floberg', as we have no information on his birth at all.
All I know is that in 1762 and 1771 (burghership and marriage respectively) he was registered as 'Jurrij Vloberg and Jurie Floberg' (once also written as Vloberg) 'born in Stockholm' in Rotterdam, and after he settled in Amsterdam he was registered in 1772 - as a member of the Lutheran church - as Eric Floberg from Floda.
One expert here thinks that he might have been christenened as Göran Eric Floberg, as many  immigrants from Germany used their middle name as their given name. I don't know if people from Sweden did that too.
Well anyway, thanks for searching and thinking along.

Hej Eva,

I have now tried to read (decipher) the picture you sent of Eric's baptism, but I'm afraid I can not make much of it! Can you (or could somebody else) transcribe this text for me please? I can not even find the name Floberg in it. Can you? Why do you think this Eric's name is Floberg? I hope you can help me with a transcription!
Thank you in advance!
Els

O, and in case you interested, both Eric and Rebecca died in 1811.

Hej Eva,

This is very interesting indeed! Thank you very much!

I already have a lot of information about Erik Floberg in the Netherlands, including the baptisms of all his (11) children, seven of whom survived childhood, but so far I failed to find his birthplave or date  (although he did write in a letter in April 1793 that his birth date was 7 march ('ok war den 7 mars 58 är gammal'), which is not quite, but almost 2 March ;-).

What we really would like to know is when and why he came to Holland (the first mentioning we found of him is in 1760, when he lived in Rotterdam, after his marriage (1771) there he lived in Amsterdam).
An odd detail is that at first he called himself Jurri (= Göran), but it was only after his removal to Amsterdam in 1771 he was called Eric.

Where by the way is Floda?

How did you find all the details about his children? Were you already interested in him? Are you related?
Tack igen, många hälsningar,
Els

Hej, I have an Eric Floberg who was born 7 March 1735, either in Stockholm or in Floda. He came to Holland ca. 1760 and got many children  in Amsterdam. Does anyone know anything about him?

Hej,

I am looking for the origines of a man called Eric Floberg (Flodberg). He married in 1771 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, then moved to Amsterdam, where he had a silk manufacturing business.
He got several children. He also acted as a contact (commisionair) for the naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg from Uppsala.
On at least one occasion Floberg claimed he was a native of 'Floda in Sweden'. At his death registration in 1811 his son said that his father (Eric) had been born 'near Stockholm'.
Does anyone know this Eric Floberg?
Thank you in advance.

Hej Birgit,
Thank you very much for your answer. This is very interesting indeed!
I hope you don’t mind my writing in English now. I am Dutch and I know some Swedish, but I am not sure I understand your answer correctly because of lacking knowledge of Swedish, and also all this is a bit to complicated for me to explain in Swedish!

What I understand from your answer that:
‘your’ Hans Jacobsson was born 1703, was salpetersjudare,  married June 1733 i Visby to Margareta Larsdotter
you found their son Jacob born 1 November 1735 in Visby and that this Jacob married Helena Olofsdotter,
and he also had another son Johannes, born 1745 i Lokrume (so Jacob and his wife must have moved to Lokrume).

Now all this looks very promising to me, and very much like ‘my’ Jacob Hansson Lokren, but there are a few differences between your Jakob and mine, so I have a few questions, which I hope you can answer. (I hope you don’t mind my asking them!).

1.  Your Hans Jacobsson is salpetersjudare in Visby (in 1733-1735?), whereas ‘my’ Hans Jacobsson is skolmästare, appointed in Lokrume around 1744 (where the previous school master died). Would you think this could  be a plausible carreer switch?
2. you write that Hans Jacobsson married (in Visby?) in 1733 Margareta Larsdotter, but in the marriage register of Visby I only found:
>1733-11-01  Salpetersjudare Hans Jacobsson Piga Greta Hansdotter< , so not Larsdotter.
Is this the marriage you are referring to? Do you regard the ‘Hansdotter’ as an error of some kind?
3  Did you actually find the birth (christening) date of Jacob in 1735? So you have access to this döpelse register?

And finally:
You write:   >Jacob död 1790 <
This was a ‘later’ Jacob, as the dödsregister says: sida 229, 3 april 1790 dödde coopvardie sjömannen Jacob Locren uti heftig feber blef sjuk for till sina föräldrar begrofs den 6, var fodder den 6 september 1767.
‘My’ Jacob Hansson died at sea in 1774 (I found the bouppteckning made up after his death). From what I found, Helena Olofsdotter Locren remarried, on 15 febr. 1781, with Lars Appelquist. Helena died in 1795 in Tingstäde.

Well, I look forward to your answers, as I really hope that ‘my’ Jacob Hansson Lokren is indeed the same as the one you found was born in Visby in 1735!

Hemplats      Karls
Hemförsamling   Tingstäde 1766
Sjömanshus      Visby År 1761 - 1777
Avförd         1774 i Visby (Död)

(I hope you don't mind)

https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/J0000143_00441#?c=&m=&s=&cv=440&xywh=2890%2C798%2C2204%2C1429

As Sahlsten apparently had no connection with Gotland, Laurin and he must have met in another way when they set up business together. Thank you again for your answer!

From 1795 Johan Sahlsteen has a company (Sahlsten & Laurin) in Göteborg. Johan Joachim Laurin is his business partner. Laurin was born in Gotland, but is living in Amsterdam, where he runs another firm with his uncle. Laurin lives (temporarily) in Göteborg, but lives in Amsterdam from 1803.
Question: Was Johan Sahlsten also born in Visby? Could he be a son of Anders Sahlsten?
