Thanks for the response. I was looking in the ArkivDigital under Stockholm Täby births, 1794, and under the place born column it is listed as Täby bjer or Täby bjur. It is hard to read. An example was on ArkivDigital: Täby (AB) Cl:3 1762-1815 Image 83/Page 78. I was wondering if that place was just the town Täby, or if the bjer added to the name had some special meaning, for example, a military area or other specific part of town?

I am wondering why the name of Täby town sometimes is called Täby bjur. Is this the same town north of Stockholm? Or a different town? There is another Täby in Värmland. It is said to be a new town, so was it there in the 1700's and 1800's?? Thanks for your help!

I'm needing a look-up, please, on Wachtmästare Carl Strandberg f. 1790, died 1836. His wife Margreta Catherina Andersdotter Sand, f. 1703, died 1839 or 40. They were divorced, it appears. She was living in Jakob and Johannes parish, Stockholm, when she died. He may have still been in Hedvig Eleora parish, where they were married in 1823. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the replies and information!! The website that Jan gave is a match! I had already found the forefathers listed in the tree, but it brought me further back one more generation. It fills in other gaps as well. Elisabeth, thanks for the insights about the Kruse name NOT being a soldier name, etc. Does anyone have an idea of where these Kruses came from before they settled in Värmland? The name doesn't sound Swedish--does it sound Belgian or from some other country? Mother did have living relatives on the Denison side who were in Filipstad as recent as 5 years ago or so.
Jonas (John)Denison,born Jan. 4, 1845, came to America with a younger brother, Peter. If any Kruse relatives read this I would be very interested in talking with them. Perhaps I can share some info from the U.S. side of the family.

I am researching my mother's grandfather's family. He was Jonas Denisson Kruse (born Jan 4, 1845)from Rämsberget. After immigrating to the United States he took the name John Denison and married Caroline Sophia Peterson. I am trying to find the origin of the name Kruse, and I think it is a soldier name, but I don't know which family members are soldiers, as the records don't always list the word soldat with the name. Also, there are many families with the name Kruse and it is confusing to trace the line. I believe Jonas' father is Denis Jansson Kruse. Does anyone know if this family tree is somewhere on this forum? Thanks in advance!

Anna-Carin, Yes, that could be the case. She immigrated herself at 18 years old and perhaps knew exactly what she meant but didn't know the better English translation. So far all of her info. has been very accurate as far as my research goes. Thanks for your ideas.
Christer Kalin, thanks for the extra reading help on the dates, etc. Now that I know what those two middle dates were, I am able to go look for their coming and goings from Stockholm and maybe find the woman's birth place in Täby. The grandmother said her parents were from Värmland, so I am thinking Täby is the one in Örebro, Närke. Thanks again everyone!

Thanks for your reply and information on Waktmastären. That is very interesting. I was surprised that this was a job dealing with taxes. This man's granddaughter was interviewed as an adult and she referred to her grandfather as a 'King's guard'. I was thinking that he was a military guard. If he was a guard rather than a porter, etc. would he be part of the military guard or simply an employee guard, paid by the government?
One other piece of information I have is that, assuming I have the right Carl Strandberg, his granddaughter also stated that he and his wife were out-cast from his wife's family because she was from a wealthy family and he was from much lower class.
Were you able to read any of the lower paragrah of the bann that you could write to me? It is very sketchy and difficult to decipher. Thank you very much!

 Hi, I'm having difficulty with some of the hand-writing in this marriage document. Source:Stockholm Hedvig Eleonora E!A:4 Banns 1802-1825 0/0, genline gid # 2732.320.36000. First, the title of the man wacktmastaren with Kgl Allmanna Maga?  ???tronen. (Also, what kind of work would this be??) On the lower writing, I see he is born in 1790 7/5. I can't read anything between that date and the next date 17/7 1717. Then the bride was born 1793, and again i can't read until the date ??/?? 21. Then I believe it says that they live married in ? No 10 Quart. Skrafvelberget Storre. Bottom signatures ? Hagstrom , D. Lund. Are these the witnesses, I'm thinking? Upper left corner, vigle d: 21 Sept. 1823 ?? k? ? ?ingvall. I would appreciate it very much if someone could give me some information on a soldier. His number is 124 and he was living at Grönlid, at Fasnefall egor. in the parish of Pelarne, Kalmar län. His name is Carl Maurits Strandberg f. 1832 28/9 in Stockholm. He was living there 1858-61' (Guns GID: 134.5.63000). I am searching for someone in the household records of Linköping in the year 1847. He was listed in the immigration record as going to L22. What does this number stand for? I can't seem to locate it at the top of the pages. Where do I look for this number in the household record? Thank you in advance!

Could someone please explain the meaning of besked N:o? There is a column in the Household exams which is labeled besked nr. I have noticed that only occasional entries have this number filled in. For example, I have an individual who is listed as born in Stockholm and he entered Wimmerby with a besked n:o 38. Does this designate a location of the city that he came from, or could it be a household number, etc.? Thank you for a translation.

I am searching the early history of Carl Mauritz Strandberg, born 24 Sept 1832 in Stockholm. Christened 28 Sept 1832.
Mauritz was a soldier in Kalmar and married a lady from there. His father was a King's guard in Stockholm. I have many more dates from Genline I can give you if you like. Thanks!

I am researching my mmmfar and have located him in Kalmar län as a 20 yr. old man and can trace much about him up to his death. Now I am trying to go the opposite direction in time. I want to find his birthplace in Stockholm but can't find the parish. Most household exam. in the Swedish records list him as coming from Stockholm. One or two places appear, however, to say 'Stockby'. Could this be a clue to what part of Stockholm he was from?
He was also listed as an orphan, but I don't know where to look for the name of the orphanage. I searched the Allmanna orphanage, but he was born in 1832 and it appeared that the index only went as late as 1803 or so.
Does someone have a ideas as to where I should look next? Thanks!

I am looking for my ancestor, Carl Mauritz Strandberg, born 28 Sept 1832 in Stockholm. His father was a higher-ranked officer in the King's Guard at the time. Carl's mother died and Carl was placed in an orphange. Carl's sister (name unknown)was taken in by the mother's parents, who were from Värmland and were wealthy, possibly of nobility. I would like to find Carl's parent's names, but I can't find the parish in Stockholm. I located Carl in Wimmerby as a young man and he was listed as an orphan, coming in to Wimmerby in 1852 with Besked No 38. A couple took him in and their names were Anders Jonsson and Maja Stina Swensdotter. Does someone have access to an orphan's list in Stockholm? Is there a special orphanage for the King's military children in Stockholm?? Could someone pleaase do a look-up for me? Many thanks!!

Hi,
The discussion on Swedish egg coffee is interesting. All of my ancestors came from Sweden, from various parts of the country, from the 1870's through the 1990's. Mother says her people would use the egg whites only to mix with the coffee gounds, moisten it with water, and add it to the boiling water. Continue to cook for about 5 minutes and remove from the fire for a few minutes. A small amount of cold water added to the hot coffee would aid the settling of the grounds. This method produced clear, delicious coffee.
I think it is entirely possible that this method started in Sweden. Many of the cultural habits and foods are already forgotten in Sweden today. I remember when I was a girl that a Swede came to America- Leonard Sederdahl I believe was his name-in the 60's or so and toured most of the major Swedish American settlements in order to collect data on immigration. He came to our area of Kansas-around the Lindsborg settlement. He made the comment that it was advantageous for the Swedes to visit America because we have preserved many Swedish ways from the 1800's that they have forgotten already. The Swedish immigrants clung to the old ways as a way of sticking together and preserving their heritage.
I agree with Britt that most American coffee is much weaker than the Swedish counterpart. Perhaps this had to do with the hard times of the immigrants, making it necessary to conserve the coffee. All this talk of coffee makes me thirsty. I agree with the old saying that coffee is the best of all earthly drinks!

Hi,
I am looking for information on my family from Stockholm. Carl Strandberg, born September 1832 in Stockholm was my gggrandfather. He emmigrated to the U.S. in 1889 and settled in Minnesota. His mother died when we was a child and the family says he went to the orphanage. His wife was Eva Lovisa Larsdotter from Fagerhult, Kalmar. He was a soldier in Gronlid (Pelarne), Kalmar.
I would like to find his family in Stockholm, and to find the names of his parents. His father, name unknown, was in the King's Guard in Stockholm during the 1830's.
Is anybody reasearching this same family? I would greatly appreciate any help.
