Discussions in English / icke adm
« skrivet: 2024-03-14, 02:18 »
While following a couple of ancestors in the Household Records, a note is made for both of them stating 'icke adm'.  I lose track of them after that.
Does 'icke adm' having something to do with leaving the parish without a moving certificate from the priest?

Thanks.

General questions / Johan Andersson and Karin Ersdotter familie

Could someone help with translation of notes made on the family of Johan Andersson/Karin Ersdotter.  The record made several notes regarding this family that I think would be important to understanding their situation.
The household record can be found at:

thank you for your help.  I'm a little overwhelmed at the responses.  Its much more than I had hoped for.

One more question.  Would a good english translation for Södergren be: South Branch?

Thanks for your help.
Yes, I did mean Catharina, not Maria.
I appreciate your insights. This information gives me more avenues of research.

P.S.
My wife and I took a boat tour of the Stockholm archipelago this past August.
What a beautiful tour. We stopped at a few islands and hiked a bit. It was a great experience.

General questions / Help to identify a location.
« skrivet: 2024-03-05, 02:09 »
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can identify a location for me.
Johan Södergren born 1746 and his family were living at the Sörby Soldatehus In Hyltinge parish, Södermanland.

Hyltinge (D) AI:3 (1783-1795) Image 190 / Page 14 (AID: v115739a.b190.s14, NAD: SE/ULA/10422)

I believe he was a soldier and left service in 1789 or 1790 because of his age.  I can't determine where he and his family went however.
It looks like his daughter Maria left in 1787 to a location written in the Afgådt til column.

Can someone help me determine where Johan Södergren's family went and also where their daughter Maria went?
I've attached an image of the Household record page

Thanks so much.

Hi,
Can someone help decipher and interpret the marriage record for Per Jonsson and Elizabeth Pahlsdotter?
I'd like to determine the where each of them were residing at the time of their marriage, and any other information this record might provide.

Thanks so much!

Thank you, Maud.
That was a great help.

Is it possible to translate the information for Karl Johan Gustavsson in column 14 (Anteckningar) also?
Found on page 526, Grums parish, AIIa:10 (1919-1932)

Thanks so much.

Hi,

Can someone help translate or give some insight regarding a family in a household record?

I'm having difficulty understanding the relationships in the family and some of the notes for the family.

Specifically, what is the relationship between Alfhild Märta Maria on line 11 to Karl Johan Gustavsson and Maria Högfält on lines 9 and 10?

And the same question for Karl Erik on line 12.  I'm not sure what the abbreviations mean for Alfhild and Karl Erik.

Also, what is Karl Johan's Gustavsson's occupation?

Can someone help in the translation of the notes (anteckningar, column 14) for Karl Johan Gustavsson?

Lastly, does the number 82 indicate the page number the family moved to under the Utflyttad column?

I know it is a bit much to ask, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

General questions / Adoption
« skrivet: 2020-08-05, 18:30 »
Hi,

I have a general question regarding step children.

Often we see a marriage where the mother or father brings with them children from a previous marriage or relationship.
Was there a general custom that these children were adopted?
If there was an adoption, would there be a legal record recording the adoption?

I know this can be a complicated subject.

« skrivet: 2020-01-13, 19:05 »
Hello,

Could someone help with the translation of a comment or description in a household record.

There is a comment or word or phrase next to Halsten Jonsson's name at the top of the page that I don't recognize.

Well I found out why at least 3 of the children are not listed on the Household record (1730-1738).
Karin, Britta, and Oluf died between 1st and 4th of July 1723.

It had to have been a bitter time for the parents.

15
Thanks, Leif.
Great insight.

16
Hi Per,

I wasn't aware of Jon Haltsensson's death date, nor of his wife's.  Thanks so much.  Will look up their records.

Can you tell me your reasoning why you believe Håkan was the brother of Jon Halstensson?

Regards.
Jay

17
Hi Leif,

Do you know if listing the children after the confirmation was a common practice during that time period?

Thanks for all your help.

Jay

18
Thank you Leif, Per, and Anti Poika.

I'm pretty sure this is the right family.

My records indicate that Jon Halstensson's first name is Jan, but the household record does indicate his first name is spelled Jon.

There is a birth record of Jon, son of Jan Halstensson and Ingiard Ericksdotter born 15 Dec 1707 at the Mellmark farm.

Fryksände (S) CI:1 (1707-1732) Image 11 / Page 13 (AID: v6469.b11.s13, NAD: SE/VA/13131)

There is also a record of Halsten, son of Jon Halstensson and Ingia? Ericsdotter born 9 Aug 1711 at Mellmark farm.

Fryksände (S) CI:1 (1707-1732) Image 11 / Page 13 (AID: v6469.b11.s13, NAD: SE/VA/13131)

Both would be of marrying age during the time of the household record 1730 to 1738.

Jöns may also be a son born earlier than 1707, but the Fryksände records start in 1707, so there wouldn't be a record of his birth if this is true.

There were 4 other children in this marriage:

Marit f. 1714
Oluf   f. 1717
Britta f. 1720
Erick  f. 1723

but none of them are listed on the household record (1730-1738).

I can't find this family in earlier household records which is puzzling.

All of the birth records show they were born in Mellmark, so I think they would have been permanent residents.

Is it possible the parish priest could have missed this family annually?  Later household records show Halsten's last name as Hämälainen.

I think this indicates that Jan or Jon Halstensson was Finnish.  Would the name Jan be more common among Finnish families?

Thank you all for your help.

Jay

Hi,

I believe I've found my ancestor's family on Household records from Fryksände parish 1730-1738 on ArkivDigital.

But I'm having a difficult time determining names and where the family members end.

What I think I understand is that Jan Halstensson's wife is Ingiard? and their children are:
Jöns Jonsson
Jon Jonsson
Halsten Jonsson
Marit Jonsdotter

but from that point on, I'm not able to tell if his family members continue or end.

If some one could help me with the names and understand the family relationships I would be greatly appreciative.

Regards.

I'm not sure how to insert an image into this post, so I added this link.

Hello,

Would someone be kind enough to help with  the translation of a marriage record?

I've attached a screenshot of the record and it can be found on ArkivDigital:
Torp (P) C:2 (1756-1798) Image 177 / Page 345 (AID: v4728.b177.s345, NAD: SE/GLA/13562)

It's from Torp parish, Älvsborg.

I think I understand that the marriage is between the young man Nils Olsson from Kiåkhuet? in Hede parish and the maid Anna Engelbrechtsdotter from Åttersbyn.

But, the rest of the record is beyond my understanding.

Thanks so much.

Jay Hagfeldt

22
Per,

Thank you for your reply.
Engelbrecht Jacobsson and Anna Andersdotter are indeed her parents.

I'll look for a move in record in Torp parish for her.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you develop your knowledge of Swedish records?
I've been doing Swedish research off and on for about 25 years, and have had some success, but am easily stumped when people I research move to a different parish or län.  Also have difficulty deciphering notes left by priests in the records.
Are there courses one can take in Sweden regarding genealogy research.

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Jay

Hi,

There is a move in record for Anna Engelbrechtsdotter in Krokstad (O) B:1 (1794-1822) Image 63 / Page 115 (AID: v2547.b63.s115, NAD: SE/GLA/13290).

Can someone help with the translation?
I'm pretty sure that I see that she moved to Krokstad parish in 1808 and that she came from Torp parish (Älvsborg län).

There is another date in the record (26 May 1810?), but I don't know what that refers to.

I'd like to determine which farm in Krokstad she moved to and any other information that might help in tracing her movements.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Tack så mycket.
Jay Hagfeldt

Discussions in English / Jan Olsen Ströte - Where did he go?
« skrivet: 2017-09-13, 20:35 »
Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can provide some insight to research on my great grandfather.
His name in Sweden was Jan Olsen Ströte.
He was born 8 February 1859 in Östmark, Värmland and lived on the Vallarne farm.
In 1881 he moved to Åhlsta, Dahl parish, Västernorrland.
In 1883, the Dahl parish records show he moved to Njurunda parish in Västernorrland.
However, Jan doesn't appear on the Njurunda move-in records.

The next record I have of him is his marriage record in 1891 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He married Mary Olsen (f 1870 near Trondheim).  Jan Olsen Ströte was using the name of John Hagfeldt by 1891.  Högfeldt was his mother's last name.

If anyone has any ideas as to what genealogical resources might prove helpful or possible avenues of research to determine where Jan Strøte went in 1883, I would be greatly interested in hearing them.

A map of the Njurunda and Dal areas of Västernorrland show that they are near the Gulf of Bothnia.  Another possibility that occurred to me is that he may have signed on as a crew member of a ship, but I'm not sure if that area was known for shipping.

That was more than helpful, that was a revelation.
I've run into a few ancestors who emigrated to Stockholm, and I'm sorry to say that it was like a black hole to me.  They would just disappear, and I could no longer trace them.

Thank you so much Åke.   :)

Hi all,

From time to time I find ancestors from Östmark who emigrated to Stockholm.
I assume there are multiple parishes in Stockholm, but does anyone know of a way to determine which parish a person went to?  The last ancestor I found showed on the Household Examination that he went to Stockholm, Drottningen 35, which is a street address in Stockholm, I believe.  How would a person know which parish?

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply.  From that perspective it makes sense.  Maybe if I can find the estate inventory record from Lisa's previous marriage, it could help shed more light.  Since Per and Lisa were married in 1765 and Per became a soldier in 1777, then moved, it would seem he and Lisa were not able to hold on to the farm.  From what I understand about some my ancestors in Sweden, they were at times very poor.  They lived in the Östmark, Gräsmark, Gunnarskog parish areas of Värmland.

Regards.

Swedish customs / Marriage customs
« skrivet: 2016-10-27, 19:19 »
Hi all,

I recently visited cousins in Östmark, Värmland and had a wonderful visit.  Our cousins took us to the farm where my great grandfather was born and later to the church he attended.  They also helped us understand much of Swedish customs and life.

When we returned home I was so inspired, that I revisited the research I had done a few decades ago, armed with a better understanding.  It has opened up new questions and avenues of thought I hadn't considered before.

One of the questions I have is regarding a marriage of my ggg grandfather to a woman who was 46 years older than he.  At first I thought it was a mistake in the records, but now I think it is correct.

My ggg grandfather was Per Jonsson, born in 1746.  He later became a soldier in Gräsmark, and took the name of Högfeldt.  My original thought was that maybe when he became a soldier, he had to marry the previous soldier's widow when he moved onto the soldatorp.  But I found he married this woman several years before he became a soldier.

The woman's name was Lisa Pålsdatter born in 1700.
The were married in 1765 when he was 19 and she was about 65.
What circumstances would bring about such a marriage?

This has me stumped.

When Lisa passed away in 1782, Per remarried, and my ancestral line comes thru the second marriage.

Regards.
Jay Hagfeldt
