Actually, the chronological order seems to be:

Maren/ Marianna/ was first in use in Danish royal house - one daughter of Valdemar I seems to have a resembling name; then a niece of Valdemar II (the niece became duchess-consort of Pomerania) was Marianna, then a daughter of Valdemar of Sweden and Sofia Eriksdatter of Denmark was Marina. Thus, it apparently was a baptismal name which first got adopted by the Danish royalty and their close families.

Then, a daughter of Niels Erlandsen of Ellinge and Elsebe Pedersdatter of Kalundborg, who must have been baptized sometime around mid-1200s, thus some decades after first Marens were already in the royal family, got the name Maren. Apparently as first of her house.
Quite often, as onomastical research has generally given plenty of indications about, such novel names in a house find their explanation of getting such as namesake of a godmother or otherwise a close and important friend of the parents.

It would be nice to know primary material to say whether Niels of Ellinge and Elsebe of Kalundborg were, or were not, allies or friends of an earlier, perhaps royal, Maren, and/or such Maren's family.
